It is similar to a parable in that it helps people to relate to your story and make the gospel more applicable to their lives.

It shows the power God has in our modern times

When is it appropriate

It is important in a relationship to first hear them out before springing your story on them. It is very difficult to argue because it is your experience

The bible says that we are to be ready in and out of season to give an account of our faith in Jesus.

That means literally anytime! Again Jesus would use parables in situations all the time to explain the power of God
