21 And pat the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, qhe was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Jesus Presented at the Temple

22 And rwhen the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem sto present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in tthe Law of the Lord, u“Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in tthe Law of the Lord, v“a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was wrighteous and xdevout, ywaiting for zthe consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not asee death before he had seen bthe Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when cthe parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and dblessed God and said,

29  “Lord, now you are letting your servant5 depart ein peace,

faccording to your word;

30  for gmy eyes have seen your hsalvation

31  ithat you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,

32  ja light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and kfor glory to lyour people Israel.”

33 And mhis father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed nfor the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign othat is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

36 And there was pa prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.6 She did not depart from the temple, qworshiping with rfasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were swaiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

21
Jesus is circumcised on the eighth day, as the law stated (Gen 17:12) (Gal 4:4-5)
22-24
Purification was needed because the mother’s being ceremonially unclean for 7 days after the birth of a son.
She would be kept away from holy things for 33 days ( Lev 12:1-5 )
She was then to offer a lamb plus a dove or pigeon. If she was poor then 2 two pigeons or doves ( Lev 12:6-8)
The first male child was presented to the Lord and then redeemed through a substitute ( Exodus 13:2 )
25
Righteous and devout
Simeon was living by faith in God’s promise of a coming redeemer like John’s parents ( Luke 1:6)
The consolation of Israel
Title of Messiah referring to the comfort he will bring (Ps. 119:82; Is. 40:1; 57:14–19; 61:1, 2)
Holy spirit upon Him
First that he would know Christ would come in his lifetime, second when Jesus was brought into the temple
30 for my eyes have seen your salvation
Signifies the Child that would bring God’s salvation to humanity
31 That you have prepared in the presence of all peoples
“all people” is plural and means gentiles and Isreal
32 a light of revelation to the gentiles, and for the glory to your people Isreal
Exactly quoted in Isaiah 49:6 “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”
Jesus will be the one to fulfill this prophecy that all people get him

Questions
Have you guys ever waited for anything for a long time?
How did you react when it happened or you got it?
Have you guys ever had to do something that you couldn’t do and you needed someone else to help, like move something, take care of yourself when you were sick, or a homework problem?
This is like what we will look at today.
Start
What was the law for?
To show us we need a savior.
It shows us our sin
It shows us that we need to live separate from sin

etc.

It is to point us to God
Lets see some of the ways that affects this passage
22-23
Since the mother had a son she was ceremonially unclean for 7 days and would stay away from holy things for 33 days
This was a male child and it was the first child of Marys, so He was to be consecrated for the Lord (set apart, made Holy, separate from others for a special purpose)
Do you know why they do this?
It points back to how God spared all the first born males both human and animal. It point to God being over all things and that they have been saved by him from death. So they set apart the first male human and animal as well as the first of your crops.
24
In Leviticus it states they they had an option of what to sacrifice, a lamb plus a dove or pigeon, or sacrifice two doves and two pigeons, one was cheaper than the other. They could afford the cheaper one so this shows they were poor.
Remember that Jesus is the king of kings and he lived in poverty. The things of this world should not matter to us especially if they didn't matter to the perfect human.
25
We do not know anything about Simeon except for what this passage says
One thing it says is that he is righteous and devout, if you remember back Luke also writes that John’s parents were righteous. How is he righteous if Jesus has not died for His sins yet?
He has been living in faith to God and He has been loving in faith of the one to come.
Consolation of Isreal
Consolation is the act of giving relief in affliction/hard times
Simeon calls Jesus this title because the messiah was going to bring them comfort.
