Colossians 3:4 (KJV 1900)
4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
Colossians 3:5–9 (KJV 1900)
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Heaven on Earth / 103
"Give us positive doctrines!"
they say.
"Forget about negative warnings and admonitions!" But the
negative warnings and commands grow out of the positive truths of Christian doctrine. This is why Paul wrote, "Mortify therefore No amount of positive talk about health will cure a ruptured appendix. The doctor will have to "get
negative" and take out the appendix. No amount of lecturing on beauty will produce a garden. The gardener has to pull weeds! The positive and the
negative go together, and one without the other leads to imbalance.
The word mortify means "put to death." Because we have died with Christ (v. 3), we have the spiritual power to slay the earthly, fleshly desires
that want to control us. Paul called this "reckoning"
ourselves to be dead to sin but alive in Christ
(Rom. 6:11). Our Lord used the same idea when
He said, "And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it
out" (Matt. 5:29-30).
Obviously, neither Paul nor Jesus was talking
about literal surgery. Sin does not come from the eye, hand, or foot; it comes from the heart, the evil desires within. Centuries ago in England, if a pickpocket was convicted, his right hand was cut off. If he was convicted a second time, his left hand was amputated. One pickpocket lost both hands and continued his"trade"
by using his teeth!
Physical surgery can never change the heart.
Not only was Paul negative in this paragraph,
but he also named sins, and some people do not like that. These sins belong to the old life and have no place in our new life in Christ. Furthermore, God's judgment falls on those who practice these sins, and God is no respecter of persons. God's wrath fell on the Gentile world because of these
Very specific instructions to be victorious as a Christian
We have a responsibility to make correct decisions
There is victory over Satan, sin, and self
The key is what Jesus said
Luke 9:22–23 KJV 1900
22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
How many today will deny themselves of anything
In imitating, or being a disciple of Jesus, there is a necessary denial process.
The key is to deny ourself
Then we have the power to conquer our 3 enemies
Mortify = subdue and slay
Mortify You r Members
Colossians 3:5 KJV 1900
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
We have a responsibility to live a holy life
that takes volition
that takes the supernatural strength of the spirit, yes, but it also takes your personal willingness and self denial
The flesh is wicked, vile, and not something to take in a trivial attitude
Today the American culture teaches you can have anything you want, anytime you want, any way you want it - That is antiChrist
If you live a loose life as a Christian you will damage:
Your life
Your families life
Your relationship with your spouse
Mark 9:45 KJV 1900
45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
Jer 7:24 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
Jer 11:8 Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not.
Addiction to sin will keep people from accepting the free gift of heaven.
If you have an eye
If you have a hand
If you have feet that is addicted
It’d be better to get rid of those things and go to heaven than
Romans 8:13 KJV 1900
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
We will all die physically, but
If a believer continues in sin
War after your soul
you begin not to love right
stop thinking right
stop doing right
Galatians 6:7–8 KJV 1900
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
The Christians who are sowing to the flesh
relationship are being corrupted
family is being corrupted
Mortify: These are things that need to be killed
Fornication
Illicit sensual activity
moral uncleanness
Impurity, lust
Luxurious living
Men = Put it to death, you used to take part in that - put it to death
Ladies = Live in such a way that
1 Thessalonians 4:3–8 KJV 1900
3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; 5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: 6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. 7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. 8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
Defraud = I will live in such a way that will not create a desire in someone’s life that cannot be righteously fulfilled
Those are powerful words
This is Bible - if you despise these words, you despise God
The world can never be cleaned up but the Christian can
2. Inordinate Affection
Inordinate = unreasonable, immoderate, and out of control
Affection = passions and lusts
Out of control, I can’t stop
Inappropriate affections mortify them
How? Set your affections in heaven
3. Evil concupiscence
Evil = injurious: - bad, evil, harm, ill, noisome, wicked.
concupiscence = longing (especially for what is forbidden): - concupiscence, desire, lust (after).
There are things forbidden
4. Covetousness
Covetousness = Greediness; an uncontrollable desire to have more, Idolatry
More of Jesus
Covetousness, more of things
Idolatry = How do I know if i’m worshipping something
In the Idle moments of our life, we think about something, desire, we are wanting more of
Anything more important than the Lord is an idol
We are to operate by the Spirit
II. Put Off
Colossians 3:8–9 KJV 1900
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Anger
indignation and vengeance
We set up a h
Anger is as bad as fornication
2. Wrath
Heated and uncontrollable fierceness
Put it off
No one wants to be around anger
3. Malice
Desire to injure someone’s reputation; Speaking evil of another person
Stop gossiping
Proverbs 16:27–28 KJV 1900
27 An ungodly man diggeth up evil: And in his lips there is as a burning fire. 28 A froward man soweth strife: And a whisperer separateth chief friends.
Digging up dirt in another persons life
Whispering
separating friends
4. Blasphemy
Railings, slander, speaking against another
2 Peter 2:10 KJV 1900
10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
5. Filthy Communication
Foul conversation, nasty speech
Why would believers use cursing and foul language
That’s what the unsaved do
6. Lying
Deliberately speaking falsehoods, false presentations, not giving the whole truth
James 3:3–12 (KJV 1900)
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
your mouth can start a forest fire of destruction
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
A few words could destroy the body of Christ
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
I said that but I really didn’t mean it
Luke 6:45 KJV 1900
45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
We need to take responsibility for our lives
We need to take responsibility
Galatians 5:16 KJV 1900
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
God loves you, that’s why He said this
God is Kind, that is why He instructs us this way
