Foundational Principals Sermon 090422
1 Corinthians 3:9-11
‘For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.’
Matthew 24:35
‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.’
The Word of God is the only way to build on the sure foundation of Jesus Christ!
Hebrews 6:1-3
‘Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this we will do if God permits.’
Hebrews 5:13-14
‘For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.’
Six Foundational Principles of Hebrews 6:1-3
1- Repentance from dead works
2- Faith toward God
3- Doctrine of baptisms
4- Laying on of hands
5- Resurrection of the dead
6- Eternal judgment
Repentance from dead works:
• The word ‘repentance’ is Strong’s Concordance G3341 ‘metanoia’ (met-an-oy-ah) and means ‘reversal of a decision.’
• It means to change one’s mind and it involves our will. Repentance is a decision - not just a feeling or emotion.
• Repentance is acknowledging our sin - and turning back to God.
• Dead works are those things we do & put our faith in, that are not of God. It’s when we put our faith in ourselves - trusting in ourselves and our own goodness. Anything outside of Jesus that we think will make us right with God – is a dead work.
Hebrews 9:14
‘how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.’
• We need to make a ‘decision’ to repent from sin and to repent from dead works.
• The word, ‘decision’ comes from a Latin word that means, ‘to settle or to cut off.’ It means that you decide that, ‘it’s settled’ and all other options are off the table.
Faith toward God:
‘But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.’ Hebrews 11:6
‘For we walk by faith, not by sight.’ 2 Corinthians 5:7
‘that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.’ Hebrews 6:12
‘Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.’ 1 Timothy 6:12
Faith is the force that governs the kingdom of God. God moves in and through faith.
Mark 11:22
‘So Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Have faith in God.’
Doctrine of baptisms:
• The Baptism into the body of Christ. This occurs at salvation.
• Water Baptism. An outward expression of the transformation that occurred in us.
• Baptism of the Holy Spirit – with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. This can occur at salvation or at a later time.
Baptism should be carried out in the full name, authority and power of the Trinity – in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 28:18-20
‘And Jesus came and spoke to them saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen’
• The word, ‘baptize’ is Strong’s Concordance G907 ‘baptizo’ and means: to immerse, submerge.
Laying on of hands:
Habakkuk 3:4
‘His brightness was like the light; He had rays flashing from His hand, and there His power was hidden.’
• When hands are laid upon someone, there is an impartation or a spiritual transmission of God’s life and light and power.
Mark 16:17-18
‘And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will be no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover.’
The laying on of hands are used for the following:
• To minister healing to the sick.
• To minister to those seeking the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
• To impart spiritual gifts.
• To bless and minister to those being sent out from a local church.
• To ordain leadership in a local church.
Resurrection of the dead:
Acts 24:15
‘I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.’
Hebrews 9:27
‘And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,’
Eternal Judgment:
The Lord’s judgments are righteous, true and eternal.
Psalm 119:160
‘The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.’
Hebrews 12:23
‘…to God the Judge of all…’
God is the judge of all ~ and His judgments are eternal.
The Judgment Seat of Christ – 2 Corinthians 5:9-11
All believers of Christ Jesus, will appear before this judgment seat of Christ. This will not be for condemnation, but for rewards. All of our works – good works and dead works – will be tried by fire, for quality, not quantity. And we will be rewarded for our good works.
The Great White Throne – Revelation 20:11-15
All those who did not accept Jesus Christ as their Lord & Savior by putting their faith in Him will be judged unrighteous and condemned to an eternity in the lake of fire.
This will be the end of all sin and rebellion against the authority and the holiness of Almighty God.
