At the Name of Jesus

Pastor Greg Stansel Acts 19:1-20 September 11, 2022

All must respond to the name of Jesus.

I. Jesus works through apostolic authority (19:11, 12) II. Responses to the name of Jesus (19:13–20)

Connect

Why is a good name so important? What is the difference between names in Jesus’ time and names now?

Study

Point 1: Jesus works through apostolic authority (19:11, 12)

READ Ephesians 2:17–20

1) What is the difference between the authority of the apostles and of members of the church today? Why is

understanding the apostle’s authority so important? What pitfall could one fall in to if mixing up this authority?

2) In the Acts passage, what was the purpose of God doing extraordinary works through Paul? What does it look like for you to submit to apostolic authority today? How does the Lord continue to use the ministry of the apostles?

Point 2: Responses to the name of Jesus (19:13–20)

READ Philippians 2:9–11; Ephesians 1:15–22

3) What is the final response of every tongue to the name of Jesus? How does your answer to the previous

question increase your faith?

4) According to the passage in Ephesians 1, how does one come to confess Jesus as Lord? How does that help you pray for those who have not confessed Jesus as the Christ? How does your knowledge of Jesus drive you to worship Him?

5) How does the name of Jesus and His position as Lord and King lead you to fear Him, repentance, and advance His Kingdom? How have you seen His name abused for personal gain? How can we ensure we do not abuse or misuse Jesus’ name?

Practical Applications

Search your heart to see if there is anything that you need to confess and remove from your life like the believers in Acts 19:18, 19.

Pray the passage

 Spend time worshiping the great name of Jesus!

 Spend time confessing how you may have taken His name in vain or used for an ungodly advantage.

 Spend time asking for help to see the thing in your life you need to remove and help sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ!

Memorize & Meditate

“. . . at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10–11).

Preparing for next week

Read: Acts 19:21-40

Ask: questions of the text.

Pray: through text, for Pastor as he prepares, for your heart to hear, for the congregation to hear, for all of us to be obedient.
