announcements- 5th Quarter this Friday after the home football game at Liberty Bible Church in Eureka.

Introduction

Good morning, for those who may not know me, my name is Kent Hinrichsen and I’m the youth pastor at Crosspoint Community Church here in Eureka.
To start off, I want to set up some possible scenarios for you.
You’ve got a big paper for english due on Friday. You’ve had 2 weeks to work on it but now it’s Wednesday and you got a game tomorrow night so you know you have to work on tonight but you just don’t know how to get started.
Here’s another scenario, you’re an athlete and you have a game against a bigger school tomorrow. Not only is the school bigger in size but they also have a couple of D I recruits on the team that you personally have to go up against and your feeling nervous.
Last scenario, you’re in band and you have state competition the following morning and you know that there is one part of the performance that is hard for you to do and you’re worried about messing up and it affecting the band performance.
In all of these scenarios, it is possible and it would be normal to feel some anxiety right?
What is anxiety? How would you describe it?
Anxiety is defined as an emotional state characterized by tension, worry, nervousness, and fear.
More and more studies show that students your age experience anxiety more and more.
Barna Group Study of students and young adults
“afraid to fail” (47%),
“anxious about important decisions” (51%)
and“uncertain about the future” (45%).
This morning I want to look at a story in the bible that talks about anxiety and how we can grow in our relationship with God when we are anxious.
1 Kings 19:1-18.

Background to 1 Kings 19

summarize 1 Kings 18.
Read 1 Kings 19:1-5

Except for the word anxiety, what words describe how Elijah is feeling?

afraid, depressed, lonely.
WIth all those words combined I think it’s safe to conclude that Elijah is feeling some anxiety right?
Let’s continue reading to see how God helps Elijah in his anxiousness.
Read 1 Kings 19:6-18.

How does God care for Elijah in his anxiousness?

How does Elijah experience God in his anxiety?

How can we take truths that we see in this story and apply it to our lives?

If time allows go in anxiety as a temptation
Feeling anxiety vs. living in a state of anxiety
Matthew 6:25-34.
