Introduction
Last week, we came to the end of the greatest sermon ever preached but what I want you to see today is that this was just the beginning of Jesus mighty ministry upon earth.
John has been cast into prison and Jesus has just begun preaching and performing of miracles all over and the crowds have began to gather.
If you go back to Chapter 4…I don’t want you to forget where we are here in context…Jesus has just been tempted in the wilderness and He passed the devil’s tests, He’s heard that John has been cast into prison, and He’s called Simon Peter and Andrew, James and John to follow Him. He’s set out on the journey here of preaching and telling the people to, “repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” and in the end of Chapter 4, the Bible tells us starting in Verse 23...
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
He’s been teaching and preaching and healing and great multitudes of people were now following Jesus.
So much so, that the best way to preach to them all was to go up on a mountain so they all could hear.
Then, He preaches the greatest sermon to ever fall upon man’s ears and as He finishes, the Bible tells us at the end of Chapter 7 that… “the people were astonished at his doctrine for He taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.”
I just love how God’s word has this extra little tid bit in there for us!
The people were astonished at His doctrine for He taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes!
Can I tell you why He taught as one having authority?
Because the Lord Jesus Christ is the authority, Amen!
The supreme authority!
The Scribes could only teach what they knew of God’s word but Jesus was the very word they were teaching, Amen!
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Jesus Christ was the very word the Scribes were teaching!
The reason Jesus taught with authority is because He was the very essence of what was being taught!
The Scribes taught of God, Jesus was God, Amen!
And that’s why He taught with such authority!
And dear friend, it was such preaching that it was captivating!
The audience was hooked on what they had just heard!
I pray to God that you might get hooked on what I’m preaching because the only thing I submit to know to you this morning, is the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified for a lost and dying world, Amen!
I would love nothing more than to see some people get hooked on Jesus this morning, Amen!
But Jesus taught them with authority and they were hooked and the Bible tells us that the multitudes followed Him!
He’s just laid it all out on the line; He’s told them how they should be living; that their lives ought to be a living testament to God.
In a round about way, He’s called out the hypocrites, the misfits, the misguided and He’s given each and every listener a choice!
Choose the straight gate and inherit eternal life…or choose the wide gate and inherit eternal damnation!
Choose to live for God and produce good fruit…or choose to live your own way and you shall be cut down and cast into the fire.
You’ve heard these sayings, now do them and you shall be wise…or consider them falsehoods, throw them to the wayside and continue in your sin and be a moron.
Choices, Choices, Choices!
He set before them they way of life and the way of death and the crowds wanted more!
If only people today were as hungry for the truth of God’s word as they were this day, Amen!
They listened, they learned, they loved it and they continued to follow Him.
Now, we step over into Chapter 8 and what we are going to see here over the next few chapters are some miracles that Jesus performs once coming down off the mountain.
Undoubtedly, these were performed as a continuation of His teaching so that the multitudes following might see and also believe.
Today, we’re going to only be looking at Verses 1-4 at Part 1 of a message I’ve entitled “Just bring it to Jesus.”
I want to simply take the word of God today and read through it and try to glean every little nugget out of it we can find.
Gold Rush
We’re going to start reading in Verse 1 today, and we’re going to see Jesus go to work here and my prayer is that by the time we get to Verse 4, He’ll be working on someone in this house and that someone, whomever you may be, will allow Him to complete that work in you and that you’ll become a new man, a new woman, a new boy or a new little girl in Christ Jesus here today!
Matthew 8 Verse 1 if you have it would you say, Amen!
A — It was an Acknowledging Faith — The Leper “Worshipped Him”
A — It was an Acknowledging Faith — The Leper “Worshipped Him”
The word “Worshipped” is described in the NT by kneeling or prostration to do homage (to one) or make obeisance, whether in order to express respect or to make supplication. To prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to or adore).
2 Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.”
Something very significant here I want you to take note of is that this is the first time in the Book of Matthew that anyone besides Jesus Himself has called Him Lord.
We don’t know and cannot speculate what this leper knew of Jesus but one thing we can know for sure is that he knew the only thing he needed to know and that’s that Jesus was Lord, Amen!
Do you know that Jesus is Lord this morning?
Do you worship Him as Lord?
Have you made Him Lord of your life?
Paul told the Church at Ephesus in...
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Listen to me this morning friend, there is one Lord and if you want to inherit eternal life then you must make Him your Lord and His name is Jesus!
This leper had an Acknowledging Faith. But He also had a Bold Faith!
B — It was a Bold Faith — “There came a leper”
B — It was a Bold Faith — “There came a leper”
John Phillips — The man was held in the grip of a terrible, loathsome disease that alienated him from all men, forced him outside the camp, and took away all hope of ever being able to draw near to the altars of God. The scribes and Pharisees had nothing to offer him. The priests and Levites could do nothing for him. Neither could the rabbis and rulers. The Sanhedrin and synagogues wanted no part of him. The temple was barred to him and the law legislated against him.
16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
This leper had an Acknowledging Faith and a Bold faith but it was also a Confident Faith.
C — It was a Confident Faith — “If you are willing you can heal me and make me clean”
C — It was a Confident Faith — “If you are willing you can heal me and make me clean”
He’s mustard up the courage, he’s come boldly, he’s acknowledged Him as Lord and now he makes a statement in complete confidence!
It’s not a matter of if you can but a matter of if you will.
All those standing back for fear of being infected themselves no doubt were looking on in amazement that this leper had even shown himself in a crowd and I can only imagine they waited in intense anticipation to see how Jesus might react!
I can see Jesus look around now at the fear upon the faces of all in attendance and can only imagine He might have said…“with men this request is impossible but not with God, for with God all things are possible! All things are possible to him that believeth!” — Mark 9:23, 10:27
This leper had an Acknowledging Faith, a Bold Faith, a Confident Faith and all these trademarks turned into a Delivering Faith.
Look at the outcome this leper’s faith.
D — It turned into a Delivering Faith — (Vs. 3)

“I will”
37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
E — His Delivering Faith turned into an Excited Faith! — (Vs. 4)

45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.
