Scripture: Mt 6:13b

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours, now and forever. Amen. --- Mt 6:13b

Doxology:

  • Doxa = glory
  • logos = word

A doxology is an expression, written or spoken, intended to give praise to God and glorify Him.

Praying the Lord's Prayer

  • "Our Father in Heaven": First we acknowledge God's position and authority as our Father and we His children.
  • “Hallowed Be Your Name”: We respect and revere God as one who is weaker approaching someone greater.
  • “Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done, On Earth As In Heaven”: We set our priorities right and acknowledge that God’s will and purpose is greater than ours.
  • “Give us this day our daily bread”: We acknowledge our daily needs and our dependence on God for His provision.
  • “Forgive us our sins, as we forgive others who sinned against us”: We seek to restore our relationships with God and with others through repentance and exercising the same forgiveness we receive.
  • “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one”: We acknowledge both our weakness as well as the enemy’s work in the world, and that in times of trial we will commit to resist temptation and to persevere in holiness and righteousness.

I. The Kingdom Is His

If a monarch like Queen Elizabeth II in our modern day is remembered and respected in such a manner, how much more our God who is the King of all kings?

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer... 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts. --- Acts 2:42, 46

I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”--- Ps 122:1

... every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine. If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.--- Ps 50:10-12

Therefore, we can pray each line of the Lord's prayer because

1. He deserves to be feared and revered.

2. He must have authority over our hearts and lives.

3. He owns everything and can give as He desires.

4. He is loving and merciful to His subjects.

5. He has all authority over heaven and earth.

---

II. The Power Is His

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. --- Rom 1:20

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know ... his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. --- Eph 1:18-21

Therefore, we can pray each line of the Lord's prayer because

1. He has overwhelming power above all others.

2. He is able to bring into effect His kingdom and will on the earth no matter what.

3. He is able to provide, naturally or supernaturally.

4. He is able to forgive and grant us eternal life, filling us with a measure of His love in our hearts.

5. He has the power to rescue and deliver us.

“If you are a stranger to prayer, you are a stranger to the greatest source of power known to human beings.” --- Billy Sunday

III. The Glory Is His

I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. --- Exo 33:19

The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation. --- Exo 34:7

For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen. --- Rom 11:36, NLT

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. --- Mt 5:16

For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God with your body. --- 1 Cor 6:20, LEB

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. --- 1 Cor 10:31

“Prayer and praise are like a bird’s two wings: with both working, you soar; with one out of action, you are earthbound. But birds should not be earthbound, nor Christians praiseless.” --- J. I. Packer

Therefore, we can pray each line of the Lord's prayer because

1. All glory and honour belongs to Him.

2. The ushering in of His kingdom and doing of His will is ultimately for His glory.

3. He is glorified when His people are satisfied and without lack.

4. He is glorified in our right relationships with God and others.

5. He is glorified when we stand strong in our faith and overcome our enemy.

IV. Now And Forever, Amen

Are we truly able to say an emphatic AMEN when we pray according to the Lord’s prayer?

Do we truly commit ourselves to agree with what is prayed, and wholeheartedly acknowledge the truths behind each petition we are making?

1. When you pray “our Father in heaven”, do you believe that Jesus Christ is your personal Saviour, and that God is your loving Father through Jesus, and that every Christian is your brother and sister in God’s family?

2. When you pray “Hallowed be Your name,” is fear and reverence to God your controlling purpose in life, regardless of the cost or outcome? Do you trust God completely, and obey Him unreservedly?

3. When you pray “Your kingdom, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,” are you obeying God’s will and command to love God and to love others wholeheartedly? Are you wearing your faith on your sleeve and living it out consistently in the world?

4. When we pray “Give us this day our daily bread,” will you acknowledge your daily dependence on God in your life?

5. When we pray “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us,” have you asked God to forgive you of the sins you have committed? Have you extended forgiving mercy to others who have offended you, and to not bear grudges or cherish bitterness in your heart towards them?

6. When we pray “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil”, have you put on the full armour of God to stand against the devil’s schemes to tempt you away from God? Are you leaning on the Lord for strength to overcome temptation?
