Luke 17:11-19 “11 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.
This account is occurring in Jesus’ last weeks on Earth. His ministry is coming to a close. His final days are at hand. The shadow of the cross looms ever closer.
12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
On his way to Jerusalem he is going through a village and within this village are lepers. Jesus journeys past a leper camp.
Leprosy was an awful skin disease.

This disease “begins with specks on the eyelids and on the palms, gradually spreading over the body, bleaching the hair white wherever they appear, crusting the affected parts with white scales, and causing terrible sores and swellings. From the skin the disease eats inward to the bones, rotting the whole body piecemeal.”

Especially bad in Israel.
God had given whole chapters about the disease, it’s diagnosis, and what to do about it
reference: Leviticus 12,13 and Numbers 12.
Leprosy was not just nasty it also resulted in complete isolation from the main of society
Incurable from a human perspective.
Leviticus 13:44-46 “44 He is a leprous man, he is unclean: the priest shall pronounce him utterly unclean; his plague is in his head. 45 And the leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and his head bare, and he shall put a covering upon his upper lip, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean. 46 All the days wherein the plague shall be in him he shall be defiled; he is unclean: he shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his habitation be.”
Since they couldn’t dwell with the rest of society they dwelled together.
13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
As Jesus passes by they somehow hear about what he’s done and who he is!
They start calling out to him
“Master” = Lord - They knew he was powerful! In their desperation they called out to Jesus!
Have Mercy on us
They were asking Jesus to have compassion/pity on them.
How great is it that Jesus really did have compassion for them!
We have a compassionate Lord!
14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
To go and be shown to a priest is a big deal for a Leper.
God was very specific in how he dealt with and contained leprosy (whether in home or human) and the Priest was almost like the health inspector in that operation.
They had to job of declaring individuals clean and unclean.
From Leviticus 13-14.
Once declared clean they could go back to full participation in society!
They hear this command from Christ and begin their trek to a priest and it is on their way that something miraculous happens !
They were cleansed- Made Clean
Jesus the compassionate master cleansed them!
15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
One of the men upon realizing that he was healed turned back to go to Jesus!
The others proceeded towards the priest in the religious ceremony but this man had to go back to the Jesus!
“When he saw that he was healed, instead of going forward to the priest, to be by him declared clean, and so discharged from his confinement, which was all that the rest aimed at, he turned back towards him who was the Author of his cure, whom he wished to have the glory of it, before he received the benefit of it.” - Matthew Henry
With a loud voice he glorified God, acknowledging it to come originally from him; and he lifted up his voice in his praises, as he had done in his prayers
Notice to give God glory is to give Jesus glory.
John 10:30 “30 I and my Father are one.”
John 10:30 KJV 1900
30 I and my Father are one.
16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.
The only right way to approach Jesus.
Giving the Lord what he deserved
17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
Is it not amazing that Jesus not only notices his gratefulness but distinctly notices the ungratefulness of the nine!
18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
A stranger(non Israelite) was the one who worshipped!
Jesus is a God of the world
Jew,Gentile, Healthy, Sick
19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
It wasn’t physical healing or societal change it was heart change that brought wholeness to this man!
It was faith in not just the power of Jesus but the person of Jesus that saved him!
This is an incredibly wonderful story! We get to see the power and compassion that our Lord has!(truly wonderful)
I want to go through this account as there is so much truth here for us.
Did you know we live in a broken world? It’s just a bad place.
Creation was cursed in Genesis 3
Romans 8:22 “22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”
Romans 8:22 KJV 1900
22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
Jeremiah 12:4 “4 How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.”
Jeremiah 12:4 KJV 1900
4 How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.
Death entered when sin entered
Romans 5:12 “12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
Romans 5:12 KJV 1900
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
This world is broken and full of so many broken people
Romans 8:22 “22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”
Romans 8:22 KJV 1900
22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
Job 15:16 “16 How much more abominable and filthy Is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?”
Job 15:16 KJV 1900
16 How much more abominable and filthy Is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
Genesis 6:5 “5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
Genesis 6:5 KJV 1900
5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
People who hurt, people who worry, people who cry, people looking for answers, sick people, complicated people, people like you and I
If I may remind you something it is that Jesus makes us whole! With out him we are broken.
Spiritually and emotionally
Just broken
Psalm 34:18 “18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; And saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 KJV 1900
18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; And saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Col 2:10 “10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:”
Colossians 2:10 KJV 1900
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
Look again at what Jesus says in Luke 17:19 “19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
Luke 17:19 KJV 1900
19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
Jesus us in the business of making things whole.
Maybe you’re finding yourself much like the man in this story, just broken.
Broken relationships?
With God?
Broken lifestyle
Broken emotions
Just not Complete?
Somethings lacking?
WHATEVER THEY MAY BE TAKE THEM TO JESUS AND HE CAN MAKE IT BETTER!
Maybe the Lord had done a miracle and you find your self “whole”!
Glory to God!
Those who are whole worship
Jesus can make us whole and those who have been made whole are to be worshippers!
BECAUSE OF JESUS WE CAN BE WHOLLY(&)GRATEFUL!

The Broken Status

Before Christ all men are in an awful place. You may not think it but it was very much similar to the men we observe in Luke 17!
These men were ill. They had a sickness.
Incurable and debilitating.
It had destroyed their lives.
Not just were they sick. They were sick with Leprosy.
This disease had caused their isolation.
It would lead to their death.
It shouldn’t be very hard to see how those with our Christ or us in here before we found Christ were just like these men and their disease.
Our sickness is sin.
It too:
Affects us all
Gal 3:22 “22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.”
Galatians 3:22 KJV 1900
22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
It too can destroy our life
It’s loathsome and stinks just like leprosy
Causes us isolation and separation
It just doesn’t hurt our earthly relationships, it also hurts our spiritual relationship with our Father.
Is 59:2 “2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, And your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”
Isaiah 59:2 KJV 1900
2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, And your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
Will lead to our death
Ezekiel 18:20 “20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.”
Only curable by a miraculous encounter with Jesus!
See just like there was no cure for their disease with our Jesus there is no cure for our sins with out Jesus!
Thankfully we’ve got a merciful Lord!
Mark 2:17 “17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Jesus came to save the sick! He came with the cure none else had! Jesus heals sick people like us!
You have a problem with sin? Not saved? Feeling just helpless? RELY ON JESUS!
He’s a specialist at dealing with your disease!
Notice with me in verse 12: “Which stood afar off”
The disease of these men mandated their removal, their seperation , their distance.
Their disease got them “afar off”
Is it not amazing that it is Jesus that is going to do the work that allows for them the be brought near.
By the end of the story the man will be near!
Hebrews 10:22 “22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”
Jesus has allowed for you to be near to God because he did the cleaning!
How great is that Jesus has given us the ability to be close!
Going trough a trial?Worried? Scared? Whatever the problem you can draw close! You’ve now got access
Jas 4:8 “8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
Jesus not only cures the sickness of sin he also allows those who were afar of to be near!

The Benevolent Saviour

The goodness and mercy of Jesus is placed on full display here!
Notice what they call Him in 12: “Master”
The word being “Master” is specific to Luke and is used mainly by his disciples.
means one of greater authority
see these men recognized Jesus as not just a regular man but someone powerful!
Im not sure where these leprous men found this truth but what they knew was wonderful!
Jesus is Lord!
Yes he’s human, good, kind, great but he is LORD!
Matthew 28:18 “18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Do we live like and obey like he’s Lord?
These men were going to do something crazy all at the authority of Master Jesus!
If he is truly Lord we must truly listen.
Luke 6:46 “46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”
Let us also notice their question. “Have Mercy on us”
Mercy- compassion
Is it not amazing that Jesus(who we just established as Lord) stops and deals with these men!
That’s merciful enough but Jesus is going to take it further!
He heals them!
See but we know the big picture. They asked for mercy but what they didn’t know was that Jesus was on his way to complete the biggest act of compassion possible!
“Mercy is sympathy with legs”- Adrian Rogers
He was on his way to Jerusalem. He was on his way to show the WORLD some mercy!
Romans 5:8 “8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Titus 3:5 “5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
Our lord is compassionate and full of mercy! He showed it on that cross, offered it for those men, and still offers it for us today!
Heb 4:16 “16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Those who know our merciful Lord Jesus should be worshippers. An encounter with Jesus will yield gratefulness!

The Beautiful Song

- This man is going to come to Jesus worshipping and praising!
He was cleansed
Jesus had provided a cure for what no man could!
He was cleansed, no longer sick and dirty!
He cleansed us too!
John 15:3 “3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.”
The man was also made whole!
See having your skin fixed is great, but having your soul saved is better!
Jesus came with far greater intentions than just fixing bodies, HE CAME TO SAVE SINNERS!
The other 10 men trusted in his power but only one may believed his person.
Is it not amazing that the man’s wholeness was not dependent on his physical condition but on his spiritual one .
Having stuff, money, health, possessions will never lead to wholeness.
Just like in this passage only faith in the Lord Jesus will!
luke 17:19 “19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”
He satisfies
John 6:35 “35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”
Let him satisfy you
His only proper response was worship.
The same is true for us
If we have had an encounter with Jesus just like this man we should be people who praise, shout, and fall at his feet.
Look at the apostles after they met Jesus.
Acts 4:20 “20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”
We should talk about what he’s done for us!
Give Jesus the thanks and praise. He’s done so much for you!
Psalm 107:22 “22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare his works with rejoicing.”
Heb 13:15 “15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.”
1 Thes 5:18 “18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
Jesus makes us whole. If he hasn’t let him. If he has worship.
