2 Peter 1:1–4 KJV 1900
Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Purpose: To bring to remembrance the Gospel that was preached, according to the scriptures, by which also you are saved.
Overview of the Gospel
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 KJV 1900
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
We are saved through the Gospel. Rom1.16
Romans 1:16 KJV 1900
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures.
He was buried.
He rose from the dead, according to the scriptures.
There were many witnesses that saw Christ after His resurrection.
The meaning of the Gospel is “The Good News.”
In Ancient Hebrew the meaning is much deeper. The Hebrew word for Good News, or Gospel, is “basar.”
This word actually has two meanings, “good news” and “flesh.”
What do those two have in common?
Flesh, or meat, was only eaten on very special occasions, such as a feast, the arrival of guests, or whenever an event occurred that required a celebration.
As you can see, these times of “good news” were associated with the slaughter of an animal and a meal of flesh.
In other words, a household would have a celebration and invite guests to the feast.
The lord of the house would send out his servants to invite neighbors, friends, and family.
It was a joyous occasion.
The Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ is a time of celebration, sharing with others how they too can be saved through the sacrifice of Christ.
Application of the Gospel
Romans 6:1–5 KJV 1900
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Dead to sin.
Buried with Him in baptism in Jesus’ Name.
Resurrected by the Spirit.
Acts 2:37–41 KJV 1900
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Repentance
Baptism in Jesus’ Name.
Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 10:43–48 KJV 1900
To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
Already repented.
Baptized in Jesus’ Name.
Received the Holy Spirit. ◦ Witnessed by Peter, other brethren that were there. The testimony was that the Gentiles had received the same gift that they did at the beginning. (Acts 11:13-18, Acts 2:1-4)
Acts 19:1–6 KJV 1900
And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
Ephesians 4:5 KJV 1900
One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Galatians 1:8–9 KJV 1900
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
The same Gospel that the Apostles preached is the same one that MUST be preached today, otherwise the preacher is CURSED.
Some people claim to have received a NEW REVELATION and state that an angel appeared to them with a new revised Gospel. According to this scripture in Galatians 1:8-9, that angel is cursed, in other words it is a lying spirit and not of God.
