Week 2:
The Riches of Redemption
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace
8 that he richly poured out on us with all wisdom and understanding.
9 He made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he purposed in Christ
10 as a plan for the right time—to bring everything together in Christ, both things in heaven and things on earth in him.
11 In him we have also received an inheritance, because we were predestined according to the plan of the one who works out everything in agreement with the purpose of his will,
12 so that we who had already put our hope in Christ might bring praise to his glory.
13 In him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed.
14 The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession, to the praise of his glory.
Introduction: Last week, Know then Do
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace
We have redemption by Him AND through Him!
In Him We Have Redemption
One of the greatest realities that we can come to terms with as believers is the fact that we are redeemed. If we do not start here we will constantly be chasing after things that in no way can truly satisfy the hunger of our souls......But in this reality we can find rest. As believers we have (right now) redemption. This is huge!
How many times do we feel the weight and the guilt if sin? Many times, right? What do we do to silence that guilt? Or where do we run to find comfort and hope?
We see our human tendencies clearly in the Garden. When they sinned they tried to hide and cover their guilt and shame on their own but it wasn’t enough. They tried to cover outwardly what had scarred them inwardly. Unrighteous guilt will have you running from the only true hope that you have.
But what God does is He kills an animal and uses it to clothe these two sinners. Look at the parallel here: the animal didn’t sin the people did, but yet this animal dies so that what the sinner maybe restored. Sounds familiar?
It is through to blood of the slain Lamb that you and I have redemption. Redemption means to be bought with a price. This was the price that was paid for our sins.
4 Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.
Our sins ought to make us run to Him and not away from Him. (HIDING MEME) Why? Because redemption is given by:
1. Forgiveness of sin
2. According to His grace (freely)
In Him We Have Wisdom and Understanding
Ephesians 1:8
8 that he richly poured out on us with all wisdom and understanding.
In this grace He has given us wisdom (godly) and insight. Wisdom=seeing and knowing the truth (shaping of a worldview). Understanding=how to use wisdom (guiding principles). These are the riches found in Christ.
3 His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
In Him We Know The Mystery of His Will
9 He made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he purposed in Christ
A mystery with God is not just simply some unknown thing but it is a truth that has been held by God to release at the proper time. He has made known to us this mystery.
1. His eternal plan
2. He is unifying all things to Himself
3. 1 & 2 are our hope in which we live.
Christ is the answer to division, to disunity, and to disharmony. He is the One who breaks down all barriers; He is the One who reconciles all things.
(Paul’s use of first and second person personal pronoun=including Jews and Gentiles=the mystery)
a. He reconciles man to God by the blood of the cross (Ephes. 2:4-13, esp. Ephes. 2:13).
b. He reconciles man to man by bringing all men together into one body, His church (Ephes. 2:13-22; cp. Ephes. 1:22-23).
c. He reconciles Christians to Christians by the power of the Holy Spirit and by giving individual gifts and functions for each member to perform (Ephes. 4:1-32).
d. He reconciles believers to God by the power and fruit of the Holy Spirit (Ephes. 5:1-21).
e. He reconciles family members to family members by giving the example of Christ's love for the church (Ephes. 5:22-24).
f. He reconciles slaves (employees) to masters (employers) by putting both on an equal footing before Christ (Ephes. 5:5-9).
g. He enables man to overcome the cosmic and spiritual powers and the evil forces of the universe by the armor of God (Ephes. 6:10-18).
4. The Great Picture of Ephesians is "God's Redemptive Purpose." His redemptive purpose reads like a theological picture of four scenes.
a. Scene 1: God's Election (Ephes. 1:3-14). Before the earth was ever founded, God chose (the literal word is "elected") believers in Christ. He chose all who would trust and commit themselves to Christ.
b. Scene 2: God's Reconciliation (Ephes. 2:1-18). All things are out of harmony; all is presently out of order. Division, disunity, and disharmony reign now. But the day is coming when God is to gather all things together, as one, and place them before Jesus Christ in His Kingdom—all things that are in heaven and earth (Ephes. 1:9-10). Christ is the center and the cord that binds all things together. He is the great Reconciler, the One to whom all things can look for salvation and peace—eternally.
c. Scene 3: God's Body, His Church (Ephes. 2:19-3:13; cp. Ephes. 1:22-23). God has a body, a body of people that He is supernaturally recreating. He is recreating them to experience the great truth of reconciliation and peace and to carry the message to all other men. Christ is God's instrument of reconciliation, and the church is Christ's instrument of reconciliation.
d. Scene 4: The Church, the Followers of Christ (Ephes. 4:1-6:20). The followers of Christ are to walk worthy of such a glorious life by being reconciled as one. They are to live together in unity and harmony, and they are to carry the message of reconciliation to a world swallowed up in division.
In Him We Have An Inheritance
What we have (election/predestination/assurance) v. 11
11 In him we have also received an inheritance, because we were predestined according to the plan of the one who works out everything in agreement with the purpose of his will,
There is a lot of heavy stuff packed into this verse here. As we unpack it we will help us to have a wider view of the Sovereignty of God (we can never fully grasp the vastness of this) and what that looks like in our day to day.
33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.
“Cast lot”=shoot dice. Dice is a game of chance and luck but God is supposed to be in control (this method was also used to replace Judas as a disciple Acts 1:12-26)
21 Many plans are in a person’s heart, but the Lord’s decree will prevail.
The idea here is that even though we perform certain actions, such as sin, it is the purposes and plans of God will be what will ultimately go forth.
EXAMPLE: My home, my wife and I set rule (in control). Our kids are sinner (we are too) so they at times break those rules. This does not mean that we are not in control. It means that they have chosen to rebel (sin) to the ones who are in control (if God is real why do bad things happen). The rules were set to guide you to something but because we are not God our control is limited so therefore we have to entrust you to God who “works all things according to the counsel of His will” (including my failures and successes in parenting).
Inheritance: In short this inheritance that we have in Him is heavenly citizenship.
So it is in Christ that we have the assurance of heaven. This is because God has purposed this for us and has worked it out (and is still working it out) in our lives. He has done this according to His own will. It is He who draws us to Himself.
6 I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
God is about His glory
Why we have what we have (to show the world His glory) v.12
12 so that we who had already put our hope in Christ might bring praise to his glory.
“we who were first”This is just Paul talking to the people that he is writing to but the result of conversion is extended to all who are saved by His grace.
We are to be a people who show off God’s glory in the earth. (flesh that out)
This puts our man centered theology to rest:
Isaiah 48:9-11 (ESV) “For my name’s sake I defer my anger, for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you, that I may not cut you off. 10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction. 11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.
God cares about His glory. He created you for it and He saved you for it.
A view of heaven:
Revelation 5:11-12 (ESV) Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
In Him We Are Sealed
13 In him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed.
14 The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession, to the praise of his glory.
We receive this inheritance by hearing the gospel and believing in Him (God’s role vs Our role).
“Guarantee” means down payment
16 The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,
