Don’t get distracted
Stay focused on Jesus
Discipline of the Lord
Pursue peace
Fear the Lord
God’s kingdom stands forever
Chapter 12 if I were to sum up would be roll on church with all your might!
Chapter 13 would be kinda like “oh and the Lord wanted me to remind you all!”
SLIDE 3
Hebrews 13:1 (NASB95)
1 Let love of the brethren continue.
Can we share with each other that this means to you?
Why do you think he started this chapter with this encouragement?
Notice he says continue. Why did he say that?
Do you think love of the brethren is something that needs to be preserved or protected in the church? Is it something we can always advance in or do better in?
Why is it that we can love each other?
Anyone want to take a guess at what kind of love this?
SLIDE 4
love (Greek / philadelphia) - brotherly love, kindness or affection
SLIDE 5
continue (Greek / meno) - remain, abide, not to perish, endure, survive
We stayed on this topic because we encounter challenges in the church sometimes with personalty differences, we differ in our gifts and other things.
This next verse is very cool and keep in mind second thing the author mentions for 2nd verse in this chapter
SLIDE 6
Hebrews 13:2 (NASB95)
2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.
So now we see a manifestation of love going out
Anyone have any stories of encounter like this you have had?
Why would God allow or set up these kinda of encounters?
Why hospitality?
Does God have a history of using angelic encounters? Any of those come to mind or special to you? Gen 18:2-15 Abraham Gen 19:1-14 Lot Judges 6:11-18 Gideon Judges 13:3-22 Manoah
Lets see if the Lord steps it up a notch with word studies here in this verse
SLIDE 7
hospitality (Greek / philonexia) - love or care for strangers
SLIDE 8
entertained (Greek / xenizo) - receive as a guest or lodge
We are seeing these “oh and don’t forgets” are pretty big things huh?
Ready for verse 3?
SLIDE 9
Hebrews 13:3 (NASB95)
3 Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body.
Is this an act of love going outside the church?
This is kind of an enduring love wouldn’t you say?
Ask Buzz to say a few words of how it expresses the going out kinda love?
Notice it says we are to empathize with those imprisoned, caring for them as if we were imprisoned with them?
How about the last part of this verse?
Why do you think he put remember at the first of this verse?
Okay moving on to verse 4
SLIDE 10
Hebrews 13:4 (NASB95)
4 Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
We can really see what a high honor it is by studying the words undefiled and judge
SLIDE 11
undefiled (Greek / amiantos) - pure, untainted, free from that which is by nature
SLIDE 12
judge (Greek / krino) - to be of opinion, decide, evaluate, correct
Why is marriage so dear to God?
Marriage here is the word wedding, thought was neat
Let’s check out verses 5-6 now.....another kind of love mentioned
SLIDE 13
Hebrews 13:5–6 (NASB95)
5 Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”
6 so that we confidently say,
“The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?”
This is a very detailed pin point verse isn’t it?
Look at character and love of money? What is the Lord telling us here?
How many times do you tend to be concerned in this area of money or just have to remind yourself the Lord is in control?
Last verse for tonight definitely been big for me in my walk
SLIDE 14
Hebrews 13:7 (NASB95)
7 Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.
There is that word remember again
This is a great example of the church and how it disciples
Always wonderful to see in so many areas of ministry in the church those speaking into each other, those conducting themselves with Godly character before others and finally showing a walk or example of faith for others.
Do we realize how many in the church body and outside the church are watching us?
Remember was used in verse 3 about those imprisoned. So in both verses the examples of one believer can change an outcome of another’s life.
