John 8:1-11 God of Second Chances
Intro:
· Have you ever said these words “If only I had another chance”.
· Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a second chance at some of those big moments in life?
· What would you do differently? Would you take that chance? Would you change that mistake?
· Unfortunately, we don’t always get those second chances in life, some people we hurt, some decisions we made, we’re stuck with.
· I want to let you know that is not the case with Jesus. Praise the Lord we serve the God of Second Chances.
[Read Scripture]
· This is deep passage, and we can look at this from many different ways.
· Now this is a passage about a second chance that was given, and there are four elements to this passage that we should understand.
1. The Sinful Choice that was Made (1-3)
o The woman made a decision based on her flesh rather than the spirit. How easy that is to do.
o Sin is when we think with our eyes and our flesh and disregard the Lord.
o People do not realize how important decisions are until they make the wrong ones.
o Every time we make a decision without God, we are setting ourselves up for the wrong choice.
o Every time you make a bad choice, it becomes harder to make a good one.
o Are we convicted by our choice or because we got caught?
o When it comes to sin, are you making the right choice or are you giving in?
2. The Serious Consequences that was Mandated (4-5)
o This woman had made a sad choice that had serious consequences. She was caught in the act.
o The Bible tells us that our sin will find you out. What you are trying to hide, will come to light.
o If we would think about the consequences of our choices before we made the choice, then maybe we would have chosen wiser.
o The problem though is that we are not thinking about the consequences, how was this going to make her husband feel, her family?
o The consequence for her choice to give into sin, was death.
o We all have made the wrong choice in life, for the Bible says that we are all sinners.
o Sin demands punishment, and that is what the Law prescribed, the punishment being death.
o The wages of Sin is death, (Romans 6:23)
o Friend, there is a price to pay for sin, there is a high cost for sinful living.
o Now in a moment you will have a decision to make, you could choose yourself and ignore God, or you can decide to make the right choice and choose Christ.
o There is consequence for your decision.
3. The Shameful Conviction that was Mentioned (6-9)
o Now this woman had done wrong, but her accusers also got convicted as well.
o Maybe you reacted poorly when something bad happened.
o We are quick to demand justice and condemn a person, not give them another chance, when they do wrong.
o We should be learning how to act as Christians instead of reacted like the world.
o Each one of these men who brought this woman, were really no better than she was.
o Before we are so quick to put someone out, maybe we should think about ourselves first.
o Jesus bent down and begins to write on the ground. What was it that he wrote? We can speculate, but what we see is that Jesus didn’t immediately answer them, he ignored them.
o When they press the matter, Jesus just says a few words and the conviction comes on these men. You know I am thankful for conviction by the Spirit, because it lets me know I am still with Jesus.
o The Lord doesn’t have to say much to convict us, especially when we are in the wrong.
o All of these men deserved to be stoned, but they were given a second chance, and that is what we should give as well.
4. The Second Chance that was Manifested (10-11)
o Such a beautiful scene here, the rocks have fallen from the accusers hands, a woman who was meant to die, is alive, and it is just her and Jesus.
o Jesus is the God of second chances. Is there things we may have to deal with because of our mistakes, absolutely. But Jesus is there to give us another chance.
o How many of us want another chance? A chance to start over. We can find it with Christ.
o Christ will not accuse you, if you come and stand before him asking for forgiveness.
o Now when we made a mistake, it is up to us to not go out there and do it again. Jesus told her to go and sin no more.
o Hopefully, she went back to her husband and found restoration, maybe you made a bad choice, listen we are not here to throw rocks at you, we are all guilty.
o What we need to do is come to Jesus, He is here to give you another chance, will you make the right decision and come to him?
