We Are Guided By God's Word
2 Timothy 3:14-17
INTRODUCTION
ILL- Leaving Sandia Baptist Church in the dark.
Could not see the East Mountains.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
“Guided by God’s Word, Del Norte Baptist Church is a united community of believers worshiping God, growing in faith, and showing Christ’s love.”
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it
15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
6 Ways God’s Word Guides Us
1- It Guides Us with Confidence (14)

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it
Because we are grounded in truth.

We can test what is said by the Bible. God never contradicts Himself.
Keeps us from straying to every false doctrine.
14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,

2- It Guides Us to Salvation (15)
15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
The Bible does not save us. But it shares with us of the truth of the one who can, Jesus.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
The Bible shares the Gospel- the Good News
We are lost and hopeless because of sin.
God sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sin.
Whoever believes in Him will be saved.

3- It Guides Us From God (16a)
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
It is how God has revealed himself to us.
“Breathed out by God”= inspired by God.
When we read the Bible we are reading God’s Words.
They have been written with the personality of the author but the truth given to the authors was given by God.
John Macarthur, “The truth of the Word, when mixed with faith in Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, leads to spiritual life.”
This could be an entire sermon series.
4- It Guides Us Through Conviction (16b)
4- It Guides Us Through Conviction (16b)
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
4 Ways God’s Word Convicts
A- Teaching
A- Teaching
= We learn doctrine. We learn what is right and wrong. We learn how we should live.
B- Reproof
B- Reproof
= exposes errors in the way we think or live.
C- Correction
C- Correction
= restores our errors in thinking or living back to the Truth.
Similar to discipline.
D- Training
D- Training
= discipline that leads us to a holy life.
Similar to parents discipling a child.
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
The discipline of making the right choices.
The point of the conviction is for us to not just know truth but live in the truth.
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Discipleship is not knowledge. It is obedience.
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
“observe”= live it!
5- It Guides Us into Perfection (17a)
5- It Guides Us into Perfection (17a)
17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Perfection is the goal.
Sanctification- the working out of our salvation- growing in Christ.
How do we know what the goal is?
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,
13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.
14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,

6- It Guides Us for Ministry (17b)
17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Not just good deeds. Good works are the result of someone guided by God’s Word.
It is the fruit of the Spirit.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
CONCLUSION
Good works are the result of a saved life.
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
God’s Word reveals to us the way of salvation.
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
