The Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper
John 6:51-56 “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?” Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.”
1 Corinthians 11:23-33 “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes. Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged…”
God’s Order
God’s Order
The Lord gives us these ceremonies to remind us of His wondrous glory. The Lord also gives us His Word to remind of us His promises. Like the future fellowship with Him in Heaven.
Which comes first, day or night? Does day lead to night or does night lead to day? You may ask does it really matter? it matters because God intended for us to know, understand, and rest in His order of operation. Everything God does has meaning and purpose.
If we say that day leads night, then that means everything is going from light to darkness. Everything is getting darker. It would appear that is a true statement if we look at how things are going in America and around the world. It appears as if the world is headed to darkness.
Lot’s of other things seem to follow this order. We go from youth to aging, from strength to weakness, and ultimately from life to dead. So, it only seems correct that the day leads the night. Right?
Let’s look and what God’s Word says. Turn to Genesis 1:1-5
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
We see that God made night first and then brought the light and it was good. Just as this world was dark and God gave us His Son Jesus to be the light of this world. God will take us from the darkness of this world and bring us into the light. One day we will live a life that is void of darkness.
Let’s look at Ephesians 5:8
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
You once were of the dark, but now if you are in Christ you are in the light. (AN ETERNAL LIGHT)
to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’
We once belonged to Satan but if you have excepted Christ as Savior then now you walk in the light.
Look at 2 Peter 1:19
And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
Our choosing does not keep us from dark times, trails or tribulations, but gives us light or hope in the mist of our dark times.
For His anger is but for a moment,
His favor is for life;
Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning.
Our Lord’s mercy and grace is renewed daily. It never runs dry. The Lord is good about giving us something to hold on to and to put our hope in. He is our hope He is the light. If you put your trust in Jesus that will be a time of no more paid, no more sorrow, no more suffering. There will be a day of no more darkness.
as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
