v.4:
After urging believers to walk in unity, Paul is laying a theological groundwork for that unity.
God is one, yet His oneness is manifested in many ways. In these passages, Paul focuses on His oneness or unity.
In this oneness and unity we will see the Trinity
In v. 4 we see the Holy spirit.
In v. 5 we see the Son.
In v.6 we see the Father.
One body:
One body:
The church, the body of Christ, is composed of every believer since Pentecost without distinction, by the work of the “one Spirit”
1 Corinthians 12:11-12
1 Corinthians 12:11-12
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.
Although there are many members of the church, with individually different gifts, together they form one body.
The one body is the model for the many local bodies that God has established across the world.
The fact that a person is a member of the one body does not excuse him from belonging to a local body, for it is there that he exercises his spiritual gifts and helps others to grow.
One Spirit:
One Spirit:
The one Holy Spirit of the one God
1 Corinthians 12:13
1 Corinthians 12:13
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
This is, of course, the same Spirit who indwells every believer.
He seals us
Ephesians 1:13
Ephesians 1:13
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
He gives us access to the Father
Ephesians 2:18
Ephesians 2:18
For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.
He strengthens us
Ephesians 3:16
Ephesians 3:16
that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,
One Hope:
One Hope:
There is only one hope, because there is only one Savior and our hope is in Him, given by Him.
2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.
It is a living hope of eternal life.
1 Peter 1:3
1 Peter 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Christ is alive, and because He is alive, we too can live in communion with Him forevermore. That is our hope.
1 Thessalonians 4:17
1 Thessalonians 4:17
Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
v.5:
One Lord:
One Lord:
This is of course, Jesus Christ, who lived for us, died for us, and lives for us forevermore.
He will one day return and take us home.
He is King of kings and Lord of Lords, and one day everyone will have to acknowledge that fact.
There is no other!
Philippians 2:11
Philippians 2:11
and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Revelation 19:11-16
Revelation 19:11-16
Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS
One Faith:
One Faith:
Jude called it the faith that was delivered to the saints.
Jude 3
Jude 3
Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.
It is the faith that has been delivered to us in the Word of God, which is Jesus Christ.
There are over 4,000 religions worldwide, but there is only one Savior who sacrificed for us, rather than requiring us to sacrifice for Him.
No other religion makes such a claim.
There is only one resurrection, only one empty tomb, meaning there is only one faith...one salvation
Jesus said that it is Him, alone.
John 14:6
John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
This one faith brings salvation.
Ephesians 2:8-9
Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Romans 10:9
Romans 10:9
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
One Baptism:
One Baptism:
As far as the one body is concerned, this is the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which happens to every believer at their conversion.
Luke 3:16
Luke 3:16
John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
1 Corinthians 12:13
1 Corinthians 12:13
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
v.6:
One God:
One God:
The conclusion is that there is but one God, though He exists in the Holy Spirit, the Son and the Father.
Deuteronomy 6:4
Deuteronomy 6:4
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!
1 Corinthians 8:6
1 Corinthians 8:6
yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.
God makes it clear that there are no others.
Exodus 20:3
Exodus 20:3
“You shall have no other gods before Me.
He is the Creator, and He has all authority.
Finally, the Trinity is central to this discussion on unity.
The Spirit is linked with the one body or church, which is called to one hope.
The Lord is linked with the one faith and the one baptism of the one body.
God the Father is the one who supremely rules over all creation and is intimately involved in it, working in and through all things.
