Intro: As we continue to study through the Ten Commandments, I want to remind you that this begin with a series called “Intimacy With God” by Pastor Tommy Higle from FBC Marietta, Oklahoma. We have seen how God has used different circumstances in the life of Moses to draw him into intimacy with Him so He can fulfill His purpose in Moses’ life.
Romans 8:28–29 NKJV
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
1. The Commandments were given by God to show man his inability to be righteous on his own. He needed to be in an intimate relationship with God to be righteous. These laws are a mirror to point out our faults and to point all men to the Saviour, Jesus Christ.
2. The Commandments show man the nature of God and what a righteous relationship with God looks like, and how that relationship is to be extended to others.
We have talked about Whom we are to worship, how we are to worship Him, and how we are to hallow/honor His name.
Tonight we’re gonna talk about a day, “The Sabbath Day”.
Text; Exodus 20:8-11
Exodus 20:8–11 NKJV
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
As we look at “The Sabbath Day”, I’m going to break it down into four parts;
Define the Sabbath
Recognize the Recipients
Understand its Purpose
Apply its Principles

1. Define The Sabbath Day; 8

God makes a command to remember a Sabbath Day and to keep it holy [set apart] from the other days of the week.
Sabbath- seven [seventh day of a week], #7 means complete in the scriptures
Sabbath- to cease, stop, time of rest
There is a study technique called the “law of first mention”. The law [principle] of first mention says that, to understand a particular word or doctrine, we must find the first place in Scripture that word or doctrine is revealed and study that passage.
Genesis 2:1–3 (NKJV)
1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.
2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
Sabbath Day- It is the seventh day of the first week when God finished His work of creation and then rested on that day [looked upon His creation], and set it apart from the rest of the days of the week.
Why did God set this day apart? Creation was complete and God was content with what He had done. On the seventh day of the week, work should be complete and rest is required to be content in the Lord.

2. Recognize the Recipients; 8

The first mention of the Sabbath is in a summary statement of the completed creation and the only ones who would be aware of it would be God and Adam/Eve. With that in mind the Sabbath was given to mankind as a whole.
After the flood, Noah and his family would know of the Sabbath and pass it down through the generations. But then God makes it a part of His covenant with Abraham as He brings the children of Israel out of Egypt.
Deuteronomy 5:15 NKJV
15 And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
So Israel has a specific covenant with God to keep a seven day sabbath each week.
[Exodus 16: 4-5, 21-30] God set a time for work and a time for rest for the benefit of the people. Remember they have been in slavery for 400 years without the privilege of rest. He tested them to see if they would desire to be complete and content in Him.
So when God gave the 4th commandment to keep a specific day holy, the Israelites were already familiar with it and the reason why.
There are consequences of not trusting God or His commands.
Exodus 31:15 NKJV
15 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
[Num. 15:30-36] This took place after Israel refused to enter God’s rest in the Promised Land [Num. 13-14]. So this man refused God’s rest and worked when he was to be content in God’s provision and he suffered the consequences.
[Heb. 4:1-11] The Book of Hebrews is written to those Jewish Christians who were walking in the grace of God but struggling with the persecution from their countrymen and were thinking of reverting back to living under the Law.
Close;
The Sabbath Day is a day set aside by God, to remember our Creator in His perfect complete work and to rest and be content in Him. It was given to mankind first then to Israel specifically in the Abrahamic Covenant with God.
