Baptism

is necessary for the believer!
It is the way Christians publicly announce their faith in Jesus Christ.
Matthew 10:32 (ESV)
“So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,” Matt. 10:32
There are some who are sprinkled on, there are some who pour on water, and like us there are some who do what we call immersion.
BAPTISM is something that we call a Christian ordinance or sacrament of the Baptist Church. The other being that of the Lord’s Supper.
Meaning, those are the top two things we do together that make us a faith family. We are in fellowship with one another through the showing of baptism along with the breaking of bread with one another.
Now, obviously there is much debate that swarms around baptism. You have believers baptism which is what Baptist believe. You have infant baptism (pedobaptism ), you also have baptismal regeneration. (This obviously conflicts with the concept of Justifcation by grace through faith alone.
Today I wanted to do a quick one off lesson about Baptism. Why? How? Where & when? Who is baptized and what is stopping those of you who have never taken this step?
Why are we doing this one off lesson?
That’s because on Oct. 30th, the SBTC is having what they call a Student Baptism Sunday. This is REALLY COOL.
Because this is a day where students around the country who have never made this step before, will be making this proclamation of faith to faith families all over. I have decided for us to be a part of this! We already have ONE STUDENT SIGNED UP to be BAPTIZED ON THAT SUNDAY. I want to see who else will be BOLD ENOUGH to make that step.

WHY should i be baptized?

Ok Dayton. Let’s have that conversation…
Why should I want to get into this weird bath looking thing with you only for you to dunk me backwards with a chance of you drowning me.
Well, I’m glad you asked!
We are commanded to. ANd i’ll explain that.
Matthew 28:19 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
We see in scripture that baptism is the first step of obedience following the Lord. Even Jesus did it…
Mark 1:9 ESV
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
And His followers do too!
Acts 2:41 ESV
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Acts 8:38 ESV
And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
Baptism is a picture of dying to your old way of life and being born again and raised to a new life.
Romans 6:4 ESV
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Baptism shows others that you have received Jesus Christ as your Savior. It’s like those who are married wearing wedding rings as an outward sign of belonging to each other. Or like a rancher who brands his cattle as an outward sign of ownership.
Early Christians called baptism a “sacramentum,” which is the Latin word for Roman soldiers oath of absolute devotion and obedience to his general.
Baptism Is letting everybody know that I have made Jesus my LORD, my GENERAL in this life and I now serve Him and Hime alone!

HOW is baptism done?

As far as southern baptist… here is what we believe and why.
Baptism is done by immersion, being covered by or submerged in water.
The Greek word for baptism (baptizo) means “to immerse”. Going down into the water.
Being “buried” in water and then raised up from it:
Romans 6:4 ESV
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Colossians 2:12 ESV
having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.
Coming out of the water
Mark 1:10 ESV
And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
Acts 8:39 ESV
And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.

WHERE & WHEN is baptism done?

WHERE: Fellow Christians should publicly baptize new believers of Christ wherever they gather. A worship service is a great place of baptism. Baptism is one of the two ordinances of the church, The Lord’s supper is the other.
WHEN:As is the case in the NT, new believers should follow through with baptism as soon as they have trusted Jesus as their Savior.
Acts 2:41 ESV
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Acts 8:36 ESV
And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?”
Acts 16:14–15 ESV
One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us.
Acts 16:33 CSB
He took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds. Right away he and all his family were baptized.
Because it is done after someone becomes a believer in Jesus Christ, it’s called believers baptism.
For the same reason, there is no biblical reason for infant baptism, because babies cannot “believe” in Jesus.

WHO is baptized?

Only those who have by their own free will put their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord & Savior!
Those who understand that baptism is a picture of what Christ has done in their lives.
Those who are not ashamamed to follow Jesus Christ
Romans 6:4 ESV
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Again, infants cannot make this faith based decision.

WHAT is stopping you?

Going back to the story of Philip & the Ethiopian in Acts 8:36. After the man believed in Jesus, he wanted to stop and be baptized right away. If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and King over your life, you should ask the same question.
If you have made Jesus the King & Lord of your life and have never been baptized… what is stopping you??
