What is Paul’s Goal?

To see these new believers succeed in living their Christian lives.
What is my goal in sharing this passage with you today,
To see you, and me,
to see, new and old believers,
future believes
succeed in living Christian lives.
Chapter 3 begins with Paul explaining how to do this.
I’ll first read from the Message version, which gives a good and clear for understanding,
Then as we go through the passage I’ll follow a more precise version of the bible.
Colossians 3:1–17 The Message
1 So if you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. 2 Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective. 3 Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life. 4 When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you’ll show up, too—the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ. 5 And that means killing off everything connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it, and grabbing whatever attracts your fancy. That’s a life shaped by things and feelings instead of by God. 6 It’s because of this kind of thing that God is about to explode in anger. 7 It wasn’t long ago that you were doing all that stuff and not knowing any better. 8 But you know better now, so make sure it’s all gone for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, profanity, dirty talk. 9 Don’t lie to one another. You’re done with that old life. It’s like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you’ve stripped off and put in the fire. 10 Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete. 11 Words like Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and uncouth, slave and free, mean nothing. From now on everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in Christ. 12 So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. 13 Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. 14 And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it. 15 Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. 16 Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! 17 Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.
That paraphrase gives us a good idea of what Paul intended his readers to get from this passage.

Remember

Paul begins the passage with a reminder of who the Colossians are in Christ
Colossians 3:1 GNB
1 You have been raised to life with Christ, so set your hearts on the things that are in heaven, where Christ sits on his throne at the right-hand side of God.
Paul here is again making reference to his illustration of Baptism,
going under the water in
death to self,
death to sin,
death to our sinful desires and that war with us
And being raised to new life in Christ.
Paul make a similar assertion in Romans 6:5 where he says
Romans 6:5 GNB
5 For since we have become one with him in dying as he did, in the same way we shall be one with him by being raised to life as he was.
There is a call action here!
It is a call to the hope of the resurrection,
for each of us.
He says

set your hearts on the things that are in heaven

This doesn’t mean . . . .
set your heart on golden harps
new robes and
endless choir songs
This is where you just might ask yourself,
Would this action bring joy or shame to God?
WWJD What would Jesus Do?
I have had bracelets to remind me of such things but after a while I take them off.
Not because i don’t believe in that emphasis,
but because after about a month,
my skin does not like the rubber bracelet.
Whether we wear a bracelet or not,
we can have the attitude that asks
“Would this bring honer to Christ?”
or
“Would Would Jesus do?”
That is a way to set our hearts on heaven,
it’s setting our hearts on heavens point of view.
Likewise verse 2 talks about setting our mind on things above
Colossians 3:2 GNB
2 Keep your minds fixed on things there, not on things here on earth.
Does that mean I can’t build a model with my kid,
because my mind has to be on things above? ? ?
No, of course not, but but there are worldly attitudes we can have and
heavenly attitudes we can have
that will help us grow and help the church,
the body of Christ grow.
Returning to his dead to sin and alive to Christ emphasis,
Paul says
Colossians 3:3 GNB
3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Hidden with Christ in God

Hidden

Slowly
What does it mean to be hidden in Christ?
Pause
When we are hidden,
we are safe
we are protected from the enemy.
When Moses asked a favor of God, to see his presence, God needed to protect Moses (Exodus 33:20-23)
so He was going to set Moses in the cleft of a rock and cover him there with his hand, so Moses
a mortal man,
would not see the face of God and die.
Exodus 33:20–23 GNB
20 I will not let you see my face, because no one can see me and stay alive, 21 but here is a place beside me where you can stand on a rock. 22 When the dazzling light of my presence passes by, I will put you in an opening in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take my hand away, and you will see my back but not my face.”
Blind Fanny Crosby wrote a beautify song relating to this passage
A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord, a wonderful Savior to me. He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock, where rivers of pleasure I see.
Refrain: He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock that shadows a dry, thirsty land. He hideth my life in the depths of his love, and covers me there with his hand, and covers me there with his hand.
2 A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord; he taketh my burden away. He holdeth me up, and I shall not be moved; he giveth me strength as my day. [Refrain]
When we are hidden in Christ, we are SAFE in Christ, and
when Jesus Christ returns,
we will return with him, sharing in His glory,
if we have stayed in Christ
if we have died to sin and self
if we have been raised with Christ to new life in Christ.
Listen to verse 4
Colossians 3:4 GNB
4 Your real life is Christ and when he appears, then you too will appear with him and share his glory!
In order to be in Christ, three things need to happy:
Something has to be Removed
Something has to Replace it
and Rejoicing makes it complete.

Remove

This is where Paul explains what he means by earthly things
and it’s not necessarily, houses, cars and stuff.
Colossians 3:5 GNB
5 The Old Life and the New You must put to death, then, the earthly desires at work in you, such as sexual immorality, indecency, lust, evil passions, and greed (for greed is a form of idolatry).
Sexual Immorality is something so common today, many people feel no shame, even many Christians.
Indecency - some may say decency is a social idea, but
basically every society has some concept of decency.
An acquaintance of mine,
had been a ship captain in the South Pacific for many years.
Once, he shared that even on the South Pacific Islands that are topless,
all the women wore skirts
and the length of the skirt clearly let everyone know
if the young lady was a decent or indecent of a person.
Lust the first thing we think about here is sexual sin but we can lost for many things
Money
Fame
Power
and pursuing those things, we treat others poorly,
Evil Passions or Evil Desires
A desire become evil, when we pursue it the wrong way.
It’s perfectly fine to desire a restaurant dinner
but desiring to have it without paying for it
skipping out on paying, would be evil.
Within marriage, intimate relations are a blessing from God and
Outside of marriage, are an evil desire
an evil action.
Greed (a form of idolatry)
an intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power or food.
What does Paul want us to do with these problems, these sins?
Die to them!
Why, what is so bad about them?
Colossians 3:6 GNB
6 Because of such things God’s anger will come upon those who do not obey him.
If we let those desires,
those lifestyles
rule our lives
we are just stirring up God’s anger with us.
That is not a safe place to be.
NOT A SAFE PLACE TO BE.
So don’t go there!
Count yourself dead to sin.
When you see something that is desirable to you
consider,
“Is this something God would be honored or dishonor by me pursuing it?
Put them to death!
Less anyone start to thing too highly of himself Paul adds
Colossians 3:7 NIV
7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.
Every one of us that is saved,
is a sinner saved by God Grace.
Your pastor wasn’t perfect
you were not perfect.
Even your grand children are not perfect little angels.
Well, is that enough dwelling on our sin?
Not for Paul, he has another list for us to consider.
Things to get rid of, like trash in you house
Colossians 3:8 GNB
8 But now you must get rid of all these things: anger, passion, and hateful feelings. No insults or obscene talk must ever come from your lips.
So many will sware like a sailor in front of me,
and then appoligies for their language.
I have a farely high tollerance of crude talk but
I am not the one who says
No insults
No obscene talk
must ever come from your lips
It’s God that wants to see a change in our language, and
He is willing
He is able
To meet us where we are at and help us
become more like His Son
more like Jesus Christ.
Amen? Amen!

Lies

Lies, lies between believers are singled out
as something to avoid
Colossians 3:9 GNB
9 Do not lie to one another, for you have taken off the old self with its habits
I seldom have told and outright lie,
but as someone who has struggle with people pleasing
I certainly let people
even helped people think a agreed with them
until I got away from them.
What of these sins have touched you today?
What do we need to talk to God about.
Father, give us eyes to see our own sins and
the will and the wisdom to choose to live differently and
to ask for your help.
Praise God,
Paul is about to start telling us
things we can do

Replace

We can replace those
wrong thoughts
wrong actions
wrong emphasis on our own wants and desires.
Let’s read
Colossians 3:10 GNB
10 and have put on the new self. This is the new being which God, its Creator, is constantly renewing in his own image, in order to bring you to a full knowledge of himself.
Finally, something Good to put on
the New Self.
A new beginning with God.
the renewing
constantly renewing our minds
in His own image.
in order to bring us to full
knowledge of God.
In Christ we are all the same
Saved by grace
Our status
rich or poor
slave or free
Jew or Gentile
Circumcised or not
makes no differnce to God.
We may have differnt roles but we are all the same to God
His adopted children.
Colossians 3:11 GNB
11 As a result, there is no longer any distinction between Gentiles and Jews, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarians, savages, slaves, and free, but Christ is all, Christ is in all.
It’s a wonderful thing to hear missionaries, travelers and even solders talk of their unity in Christ, even when they could not understand the words said or the songs sung.
Sometimes they know the tune, they know what message the song gave because the tune has been preserved.
if I sing
Ju Yee Sue Winno
Ju Yee Sue Winno
Ju Yee Sue Winno
Koeng Jing Ee Ko Ru Wo
Many of you probably can guess, I’m trying to sing
Yes Jesus Loves Me
Yes Jesus loves me
Yes Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so.
Her come some more examples of things to put on in place of what we cast off
Colossians 3:12 GNB
12 You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Do you wear these things each day?
Compassion
Kindness
Humility
Gentleness and
Patience?
We all probably put on some of these things, but not all of them every day
That is why we need God’s help
to live the Christian life and
and we need to make these things our goals.
as we mature in Christ.
Kindness and compassion, may cause us to buy a meal for someone hungry.
but wisdom may keep us from giving cash to someone who says they will buy food with it.
In an ideal church, we should find both conservatives and liberals,
republics and democrats but too often
we don’t want to be a people who see things differently or
they don’t want to be around us.
Consequently, most the people in any given church will have many similar ideas
But is that God’s best for the church
separate, isolated units?
Here is some advice
Colossians 3:13 GNB
13 Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you.
Tolerance and forgiveness can apply in countless other areas of our lives.
We can all feel hurt or wronged so easily.
A few weeks back, I had a long list of things I wanted, felt I needed to get done that evening, and I was planning to skip dinner, or just grab a snack to tide me over until 8:30 or 9:00 pm. That was my goal. To some extent I would be suffering for the family, to take care of all these things.
Pam had a goal of feeding me a nice dinner and conversation.
I wolfed down some food,
I didn’t really want to stop and eat.
I was in a hurry and had little to say
because I had things to go do!
Later that evening I learned
Pam had feelings about her plans being tossed out
She also felt hurt for my lack of interest in having a conversation
It really bugged me to suffer for the family and then
get in trouble for it.
The world would say,
this is good grounds for a fight.
but what did Paul say
Colossians 3:13 GNB
13 Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you.
That applies to our homes,
to our places of work and
to people in our church
and in the church down the road.
Could Paul add any more advice?
Colossians 3:14 GNB
14 And to all these qualities add love, which binds all things together in perfect unity.
as Peters says (1 Peter 4:8) love covers a multitude of sins.
I want to close today with a quote from Charles Spurgeon
I am told that Christians do not love each other. I am sorry if that be true, but I rather doubt it, for I suspect that those who do not love each other are not Christians.
Let’s close by singing a old worship chorus
Bind us together Lord
Chorus verse 1 then chorus
and close in prayer.

Bind Us Together

Chorus

Bind us together Lord Bind us together with cords That cannot be broken Bind us together Lord Bind us together Lord Bind us together with love

Verse 1

There is only one God There is only one King There is only one body That is why we can sing
Let’s pray.
