The Fall of Man

Genesis 3:1–3 NASB95
Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ”
This passage records Satan's first tempting of humans, and provides us with a wealth of information concerning his tactics.
Here we find 3 ploys Satan used to bring Eve to her fall into sin.
The Serpent
Here we see Satan coming in the form of a Serpent.
We don't know if the serpent stood up, erect like a man, or if he could possibly fly.
Eve added to what God had said;
Gen 2.17
God did not say “not to touch it” He said;
“but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
Genesis 3:4–5 NASB95
The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Satan’s challenging and questioning the word of God.
ploy #1
Satan questions the word of God.
Satan constantly seek to cause a questioning of God’s word. Did God really say?
Satan did not deny that God had spoken. He simply questioned whether God had really said what he thought she had said. He wanted her to think that perhaps she had misunderstood God’s command, Today Satan still twist the truth and tries to alienate people from God.
Look at the attacks Satan has bought against the Bible, against God’s Word.
Has God said?
was it really God who said it ?
The Bible was written by men
The Bible contains errors
Satan constantly challenging the word of God.
Contradicting God’s Word
“You surely will not die”
Satan begins to lie, this the first recorded in the bible
Satan is the father of lies, he is the deceiver.
Eve did not know evil (not yet), all she knew was God said not to eat it.
Satan now challenges and questions God’s fairness.
He question God’s love and justice. Satan wanted to make Eve think that God was holding something back. In reality, God had placed those restrictions and Adam and eves life to keep them from sinning. Likewise, the barriers God places in our lives are there because he loves us.
God is under attack-
Satan questions the Word of God, he questions the love of God, and the justice of God. He is not with you, he is holding something back from you. Holding back something that is of value worthwhile, something desirable.
He doesn’t want you to be like Him, or wise to be like God.
Satan denied God’s word
first, Satan questioned God’s word, but then he denied God’s word. He went from “did God really say this?” To “that’s a lie!” It is a short step from questioning God’s word to denying it. If Eve had not listen to Satan’s questioning, she would never have fallen into his trap.
Genesis 3:6 NASB95
When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
Jesus said
1 John 2:15–16 NASB95
Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
Satan used this 3 prong attack
Lust of the flesh - it was good to eat
Lust of the eyes - pleasant to behold
Pride of life - a tree desirable to make on wise like God.
The women was deceived but Adam was not. He disobeyed God’s command.
1 Tim 2.14
And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
Genesis 3:7 NASB95
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.
Suddenly-
The lust of the flesh been given into and they became conscience of the flesh.
The beginning of Man’s body awareness.
God made us - spirit, soul, and body (inferior triunity).
The real me is spirit, I live in a body, and I posses a consciences (soul).
Made in the image of God: (The Holy trinity)
Man met God in a spiritual level, when mans spirit was up most, their was a beautiful communion with God and a fellowship with God.
But when man obeyed the body’s appetite eating the fruit from the tree of good and evil, man became inverted. Becoming body, soul, and spirit.
The spirit now is dead, out of touch with God.
He has lost awareness and conscientiousness of God, the spirit is dormant.
The upper most thing that rules the mind is the awareness is of the body, and the needs of the body.
The desires of the flesh now rule over man.
So everyone of us formerly walked...
Eph 2.2-3
in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
Because I was born in this inverted way; body, soul, and spirit.
my mind and body is ruled by the body appetites (it’s all I think about). It dominates my mind, my every thought.
Jesus said to Nicodemus - You must be born again.
John 3:3–6 NASB95
Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
You were born of the flesh, but now you must be born of the spirit.
There must be a return to the original plan of God - to be in fellowship with Him.
Inverting back to spirit, soul and body.
Changing the mind to spiritual things.
They that are of the flesh do mind to fleshly things, they of the spirit, do mind spiritual things.
1 Cor 2.12 “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,”
therefore, my mind is ruled by either my body appetites or my spirit.
When I am born again by the spirit of God, the spirit become uppermost, my conscientiousness, my mind is that of a God conscientiousness and my spirit rules. spirit, body, and soul.
coming back into fellowship with God, I am now alive in the spirit where I was once dead in my sin. But now God has made me alive in the spirit again and it’s a whole new life.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
Old things past away, all things become new. I am a new creation, a new creature in fellowship with God. I now have the mind of Christ, having an awareness of God longing for things of God. A new view on life.
Testimony-
My friends I used to run around with don't recognize me. I am not the person I used to be.
What now seems so clear to me, because I am now spiritually alive, does not make sense to my old friends. They think I am crazy and can not understand this new life I have.
2 Cor 2.14 “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place.”
THE CHOICE
Interesting to note that man lost his fellowship by the tree.
God gave the free choice of the tree.
Also interesting this choice is still there for us today. There are still (2) trees.
The tree of life
The tree of knowledge of good and evil.
We are often blaming Adam for making this choice.
What about us? Who can we blame for the choices we make?
God has provided another tree.
The tree that was lost by Adams sin can be regained by our obedience to the Gospel.
The cross of Jesus Christ. The tree which He was crucified is the door that leads us back to God.
You must choose to come back to that tree. God will not force you!
Just as Adam practiced that choice by choosing to disobey, leading Him away from God- Choosing to eat from the forbidden tree. We have the choice today to choose, and partake of the tree of life though the cross of Christ. Coming into fellowship with God. It’s your choice.
God made a way to reverse the process through the 2nd tree, the cross of Jesus Christ and reversing the fall of Adam and Eve.
Genesis 3:8 NASB95
They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
God is not hiding Himself, God is not removing Himself, it is man removing himself from God.
Isa 59.1-2 “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not so short That it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.”
Genesis 3:9–11 NASB95
Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
God called out; “Where are you?” Not that God did not know, He wanted man to recognize his sin and confess it.
Rom 10.9-10 “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”
gen 3.12-13 “The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Genesis is the book of beginnings-
So here we see the first excuse, the first buck passing, blaming others. ultimately, Adam is blaming God for giving him the women, he says “The woman you gave me.”
Eve is the first wife to be blamed for the husbands problems and she is not the last.
Eve is passing the buck or blame to Satan.
gen 3.14-15 “The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.””
Consequences of sin #1
Satan will crawl on the dirt and eat from the dust.
His head will be crushed.
He shall crush you on the head;
The head is a spiritual symbol of power and authority.
The cross of Christ has destroyed Satan's power and authority over our lives.
you shall bruise him on the heal;
a reference to the Crucifixion cross of Jesus Christ.
gen 3.16 “To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.””
The consequences of sin #2
Pain in childbearing
The desire to control and rule over your husband, but he will rule over you.
God associates sorrow (pain) with sin.
Satan associates pleasure with sin,
the enticement into sin is usually held up as pleasurable experience. something to be desired, just as the fruit on the tree was to be desired, the enticement of the flesh.
therefore sin looks very desirable. Satan always paints sin with beautiful colors, and promises pleasure.
but though he may paint it in these deceptive colors.
God paints it in its true colors, and equates sin with sorrow, pain. The true result of sin is sorrow, not pleasure.
sorrow and pain in child bearing.
gen 3.17-19 “Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.”
Consequences of sin #3
Adam-
Cursed is the ground, it will grow thorns and thistles (weeds)
You will have to labor to eat and provide for your family
Death has come
There is a big difference of having to tend, or keep the garden God has freely given.
now his days are filled with sorrow and sweat
A thorn is a undeveloped blossom. Represents how sin stunted the development of our real relationship with God.
What a picture it is of the result of sin.
Significantly, Jesus who is the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, when He came, He was crowned with a crown of thorns. Where did the thorns come from? the curse of sin
He who came to bear our sin, wore a crown of thorns, representing the curse of sin. when you realize the mission of Christ, His first coming, nothing is more fitting than a crown of thorns. But when He comes again, the second time, He will be wearing a crown of Gold.
all of creation groans from the curse of sin, waiting for the day God will redeem us, to redeem that which he purchased when He died on the cross.
Genesis 3:21 NASB95
The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.
Adam and eve sowed together fig leaves showing an endeavor by their own works to cover their guilt. it was not sufficient
God gave to them coats of skin as a covering, show that the covering of guilt had to come by sacrifice. the animals had to be slain by God to provide the covering of skins, this was the beginning of the concept of sacrifice and the shedding of blood for the covering of sin.
later God calls it out clearly.
Heb 9.22 “And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”
gen 3.22-24 “Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.”
Man is stupid enough to desire to live in the condition of sorrow and pain. God want us to know a world that is ruled and reigned by him, a place without sin, sorrow and corruption.
Therefore, for our own protection he has guarded the tree of life, placing cherubim with flaming sword to guard the way to the tree of life. he is protecting man.
God has now transplanted the tree of life. it is now in the paradise of God.
Rev 2.7 “‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.’”
This tree, that grows on either side of the river.
that which was wrought by Adam, has been overturned by Jesus Christ
There is a choice, Paradise, or another place called hell.
