Cornelius' encounter with an angel and the Holy Spirit's baptism of his entire household was the beginning of the Church going "to the ends of the earth." Peter and the Jews had to witness the blessing of the Holy Spirit on gentiles for them to realize God did not favor any particular special nation. In Christ, we are all one race, one people, one nation. There is no one unclean or impure.

[NOTE TO TEACHER] The focus of this lesson is on God’s statement: He defines what something is. He decides what is acceptable and good. This is in strong contrast with our culture’s obsession with labeling other people and remaking ourselves as we see fit. The goal of this lesson is to rebuke people’s desire to define and redefine themselves and others, and to challenge them to submit to God’s authority to define and direct us all.

Peter had spent his life with the knowledge that uncircumcised gentiles where unclean and he was not allowed to enter their homes or eat with them. Now after decades of living this way God was trying to teach Peter and the Jew needed to change their approach to gentiles.

Because God in Christ cleanses all sin for all who believe in Him, we must not treat as dirty what God Himself has cleansed. (Three blind spots for the church)
