Many passages point us to the importance of the heart. Solomon does the same in this passage. The heart is a major battlefield in salvation and Christian living. Certainly, the first truth the Christian needs to understand is their need for the Gospel. But after the Gospel, this passage becomes another major truth we need to live for Christ. The Man born blind becomes the seeing man by Jesus' gift of light to his world

As the first day of our European Championships cycling events draws to a close, Alastair speaks about Zacchaeus and Bartimaeus and how Jesus saw them through the crowds and helped both of them to really see.

Jesus frequently used temporal situations to illustrate larger spiritual issues. While many may have skewed understandings of sin and it's consequences, Jesus does not. Jesus is also confident of the God's ability to be in control of all things. Is it offensive to believe that God may allow some difficult thing, some painful thing using such to accomplish soemthing else that He wants? I'm confident there are many things we do not understand. This is where my trust in God lies, in His ability to know and oversee what I simply cannot. Jesus shows his tenderness to those who've been put out by the elite, by the ruling class, as He seeks out the man born blind when he is excommunicated from the Hebrew assembly. Jesus is still pursuing those cast out today. He rescues sinners, after all. That's really good news for me. And for you, unless you think you see already. Are you blind? Jesus offers spiritual sight.

Our texts point to people who can and cannot see where the true "Mount Zion" is or who the true "Temple" is and therefore do not realize that in this world's "valley of the shadow of death" there is a table of plenty. People do not recognize the king or his invitation even if they have lived close to him, so they reject his servants and his Son whose marriage it is, so the strangers are invited in and even some of them do not "get it" and take the wedding garment offered at the door. Paul could see, so he had abundance within even while sometimes suffering privation without. He lived on and for the true Mount Zion. So when people ignore, work against, or mistreat you, realize that they are just blind, they cannot see. Try to open their eyes, but realize "many are called but few are chosen." Yet have no fear, for what you can see is beyond any death the world can deal out.

We are all born into spiritual blindness. Everyone experience different states of blindness. Those who think the see and are really blind and those who know the state of their blindness but really desire to see.

When faced with evil what will we do? Will we gaze at it with it's false beauty or stare at the author of our faith Jesus? Only one gives hope and gives us the satisfaction for eternity.
