The Judahites are experiencing a severe period of desolation and despair. While mourning, Joel prophesies about the destruction from the Almighty and how droughts and desiccation will follow after it. Joel meditates for the people and calls upon God. Every living thing: human, livestock, and vegetation are dry and barren. Yet, the church lives in a different predicament. We, too, are dealing with spiritual drought, and we must pant for the living God who can restore our soul and bring about joy once again.

The nation of Israel just wants to "grow" and "prosper" and be creative in the ways they pursue that. AKA Baal and Asherah. These are popular and powerless. By the grace of God, this leads to drought and failure. Elijah stacks the deck against Yahweh in favor of Baal... to let God show off a bit. (It isn't that other "gods" aren't real, or there aren't other powers and forces in the Universe. It is that God, Yahweh, declares Himself God above all.) God proves Himself to the nation of Israel, brings them to worship, and then brings the rain. Where we are Israel and chase after any other "way", may God strip us of our idols and bring us back to the Way, the Truth and the Life. May we have the confidence of Elijah rather than the shallow what-have-you-done-for-me-lately "faith" of Israel.

God feeds Elijah raven bread and widow pancakes during the years of drought upon the nation of Israel. Our God is jealous for the hearts of His people. He provides enough for His servants on mission. He listens with compassion. This is the God who is, the God who loves us, the God we love, the God we serve, the God we desire to hear and then speak His words after him. Know God as He is (Psalm 100:3).

We need to counter the drought of God's word, not just by knowing it, but by living it

When things go from bad to worse sometimes all we can do is cry out to God. We need to know that is enough. He is still God, He is still in Heaven. Even when crying out to God does not feel like enough, it is!
