Heart of Giving - Corazón de Dar

In the law, God required His people to give the first 10% of their income as a tithe to Him. He also required of them free will offerings as a display of love, obedience, and gratitude (Lev 27:30)

Why do we Tithe today?

We give God the first 10% of our income as a sacrifice of worship before Him.

The Tithe is not a condition of Salvation. It is a condition of blessing because it is a sacrifice.

Tithing is not to an organization or a person, but to God.

Offering and what is the difference

Offerings should be of our increase not our income.

We give God offerings in many different ways which we will discuss more in a bit.

Offerings can be given to the needy, to other organizations, can be food, can be things.

Do it all for God’s glory (1 Cor 10:31)

Transition: I want to look at the heart of giving overall. Whether it is in tithes or offerings, let’s look at a situation with Paul where he is addressing a financial gift promised by the church he writing to. He did not want them to be caught off guard or feel obligated to give. So he says this:

2 Corinthians 9:6–15 NKJV

6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. 9 As it is written: “He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.” 10 Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, 11 while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God. 12 For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God, 13 while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and all men, 14 and by their prayer for you, who long for you because of the exceeding grace of God in you. 15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

2 Corinthians 9:6–15 RVR60

6 Pero esto digo: El que siembra escasamente, también segará escasamente; y el que siembra generosamente, generosamente también segará. 7 Cada uno dé como propuso en su corazón: no con tristeza, ni por necesidad, porque Dios ama al dador alegre. 8 Y poderoso es Dios para hacer que abunde en vosotros toda gracia, a fin de que, teniendo siempre en todas las cosas todo lo suficiente, abundéis para toda buena obra; 9 como está escrito: Repartió, dio a los pobres; Su justicia permanece para siempre. 10 Y el que da semilla al que siembra, y pan al que come, proveerá y multiplicará vuestra sementera, y aumentará los frutos de vuestra justicia, 11 para que estéis enriquecidos en todo para toda liberalidad, la cual produce por medio de nosotros acción de gracias a Dios. 12 Porque la ministración de este servicio no solamente suple lo que a los santos falta, sino que también abunda en muchas acciones de gracias a Dios; 13 pues por la experiencia de esta ministración glorifican a Dios por la obediencia que profesáis al evangelio de Cristo, y por la liberalidad de vuestra contribución para ellos y para todos; 14 asimismo en la oración de ellos por vosotros, a quienes aman a causa de la superabundante gracia de Dios en vosotros. 15 ¡Gracias a Dios por su don inefable!

vs. 6 (Taking what they know)

vs. 7 (Teaching them something new)

vs. 8 (God is the supplier of everything - for the purpose of every good work)

vs. 9 (Points to God has the giver)

vs. 10 (God gives us what we need so we can give generously represented as “fruits of righteousness”

This can only come from an overflow of the heart

vs. 11 (When you give generously, it causes thanksgiving from the recipient to God)

vs. 12 (It is not just a physical gift that is meeting needs, it is also overflowing into an expression of thanksgiving)

vs. 13 (Your gift points people to God)

vs. 14 (The recipients are praying for you as they receive your gift)

Matthew 6:19–21 NKJV

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Why did God give you all you have? Is it for yourself? How can you find ways to bless others? It is my prayer that this church would find ways to bless this community and across the world through the faithful giving of everyone.

**I am not saying you should not give what you do not have**

As God blesses you, bless others. If you need a blessing, let us know and there is probably someone who has what you need. Consider ways to bless those around you. This should be a sacrifice of praise to God and not so people will praise you.

Matthew 6:1–4 NKJV

1 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.

1 Guardaos de hacer vuestra justicia delante de los hombres, para ser vistos de ellos; de otra manera no tendréis recompensa de vuestro Padre que está en los cielos. 2 Cuando, pues, des limosna, no hagas tocar trompeta delante de ti, como hacen los hipócritas en las sinagogas y en las calles, para ser alabados por los hombres; de cierto os digo que ya tienen su recompensa. 3 Mas cuando tú des limosna, no sepa tu izquierda lo que hace tu derecha, 4 para que sea tu limosna en secreto; y tu Padre que ve en lo secreto te recompensará en público.
