The Bible clearly shows that marriage is God's idea, not ours and we would do well to function in this relationship in light of biblical truth.

Introduction

In our world today and especially in our own culture, marriage has taken many a hit and continues to be shunned by many.

Given the choice, many would rather just cohabitate outside of an official marital relationship. “For example, nearly 80%—almost 8 in 10—of US teenagers (15–19 years old) ‘expect to cohabit before marriage.’” (https://answersingenesis.org/culture/80-percent-of-teenagers-expect-to-cohabitate/). Many have decided that marriage is simply a human institution–a manmade construction–which they feel no need to be bound by.

Even in the Christian community these days, many have not held marriage up as sacred, binding, and beneficial. Divorce rates for those deemed ‘born again’ are as high as the national averages though ‘evangelicals’ are still among the lowest who get divorced.

So many, even in the church, don’t live out marriage in light of the Scriptures.

Consequently, their marriages are lived outside of God’s plan for marriage. And, they don’t enjoy many of God’s intended benefits as they ignore the plain teaching of the Bible on this foundational subject.

We here at DPCC want to go on the record with this series in expounding what the Word of God teaches us about marriage and family life so that we can live and be strengthened in God-honoring biblical marriages and families.

To that end let us look at Genesis 1, so that we can behold the majesty and goodness of the One who is the Creator of marriage in the first place.

I. Day 6 of Creation sees new life (Gen 1:24-25)

Genesis 1:24 ESV
24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.
Genesis 1:25 ESV
25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

God made living creatures of all kinds on the earth:

a. livestock

b. creeping things

c. beasts of the earth

II. God created something special (Gen 1:26-27)

Genesis 1:26 ESV
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

a. God made man in His image, after His own likeness.

b. God gave mankind dominion over the fish, birds, livestock, the earth, every creeping thing

Psalm 8:6 ESV
6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,
Genesis 1:27 ESV
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

c. Male and female of the mankind were made in His image

Genesis 5:2 ESV
2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.

III. God’s blessing, mandate, and provision for the new couple (Gen 1:28-30)

Genesis 1:28 ESV
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

a. God blessed the mankind.

HALOT Definition of bless: to endue someone with special power

b. God commanded the mankind.

1. Be fruitful and multiply

2. Fill the earth

3. Subdue the earth

The general meaning of the verb appears to be “to bring under one’s control for one’s advantage.” In Gen 1:28 one might paraphrase it as follows: “harness its potential and use its resources for your benefit.” In an ancient Israelite context this would suggest cultivating its fields, mining its mineral riches, using its trees for construction, and domesticating its animals.

4. Rule the other creatures

Genesis 1:29–30 ESV
29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.

c. God made provisions for sustaining mankind as well as those under their dominion

IV. God’s pronouncement on His creation (Gen 1:31)

Genesis 1:31 ESV
31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Everything God made was very good!
