The Heart of the Gifts

(1 Corinthians 12)

We Should Not Be Ignorant About The Gifts Of The Spirit (Vs 1)

1 Corinthians 12:1 NKJV
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
Ignorant: means, not to know, or have no knowledge of something.
Many Christians today are not familiar with the gifts of the Spirit and how they work
Paul says “I DO NOT WANT you to be ignorant about these Spiritual Gifts.”
1 Corinthians 14:1 NKJV
1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
Prophesy: To tell forth God’s message. A prophet, is the proclaimer, one who speaks out the message of God.

The Corinthian Church Was Easily Swayed By Idols (vs 2)

1 Corinthians 12:2 NLT
2 You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols.
They were looking to multiple gods and not all of the believers were fully surrendered to Christ.
Paul knew that this young church could get caught up in all kinds of spiritualism
It’s not much different today! We see people running after one spiritual high after another. Always wanting to get blessed, but never growing, never serving, bring forth no fruit in their lives.
When they no longer have that spiritual high they feel lost, discouraged, and some even walk away from the faith. They feel as if God had abandon them.

The Gifts Of The Spirit SHOULD ALWAYS Bring Glory To Christ (vs 3)

1 Corinthians 12:3 NLT
3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.
1 John 4:2–3 NLT
2 This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God. 3 But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard is coming into the world and indeed is already here.
John 15:26 NLT
26 “But I will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.
John 16:14 NLT
14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.

There Will Be False Displays Of Power And We Need Discernment

2 Thessalonians 2:9 NLT
9 This man will come to do the work of Satan with counterfeit power and signs and miracles.
Mark 13:22 NKJV
22 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

The Source Of The Different Gifts Is The Same Spirit, Same Lord, Same God(vs 4-6)

1 Corinthians 12:4–6 NLT
4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.
All of the gifts that we will begin to study are given by Holy Spirit.
Understand you can’t buy the Holy Spirit or the Gifts of the Spirit. Simon the Sorcerer - Trying to buy the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Manifestation Of The Spirit Is Given To Help Each Other (vs 7)

1 Corinthians 12:7 NKJV
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
1 Corinthians 13:1–3 NLT
If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it;* but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
The gifts of the spirit are for glorifying Christ and for helping others.
Romans 12:1 – We are to be a living sacrifice(every part of our lives need to be a sacrifice)
Is your heart in the right place?
Why are you seeking the Gift’s? (Simon the Sorcerer - Trying to buy the power of the Holy Spirit).
Our main reason for wanting to be used in the Gifts, should be the same as the Holy Spirits, that is to testify about Christ.
