Let’s Get to Work

2 Thessalonians 3:6–13 NRSV
6 Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, 8 and we did not eat anyone’s bread without paying for it; but with toil and labor we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you. 9 This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. 11 For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. 12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. 13 Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.
2 Thessalonians 3:6–10 NRSV
6 Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, 8 and we did not eat anyone’s bread without paying for it; but with toil and labor we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you. 9 This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat.
vrs 6-10 —> The setup
vrs 6 —> Theologically serious
—> Paul draws on three strengths of “coercion”
—> “we command you” - the group
—> “the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” - Jesus
—> “the tradition” -
vrs 7-10 —> why Paul has authority to speak to this issue.
2 Thessalonians 3:11 NRSV
11 For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work.
vrs 11 —> The problem
—> “idle and disruptive” “Not busy, but busybodies”
—> Not contributing to the good of the whole but instead are getting in the way by not doing anything or by interfering in situations that aren’t there business.
2 Thessalonians 3:12–13 NRSV
12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. 13 Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.
vrs 12-13 —> The solution
—> “earn your own way”
—> “never tire of doing what is good”
Paul is talking to the people of Thessaloniki about actual work and earning their own living, but I think in todays day and time we can draw the parallel to our spiritual work.
We run the risk of becoming spiritually idle. We let the faith of those around us carry us and don’t do our own work. We can become spiritually idle and that idleness leads to disorder because we aren’t in a ready position to receive from God what the Holy Spirit has for us.
How do we do our spiritual work...
1 - We read the word.
2 - We seek the Lord in prayer
3 - We fellowship with other believers and stay in community.
By doing these things we do our spiritual work and stay ready.
What happens if we aren’t ready...
1 - we miss opportunities
2 - we can be lead astray
3 - we can lead others in the wrong direction
Vrs 13
2 Thessalonians 3:13 NRSV
13 Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.
We know what is right, we know what is good. Its up to us to do that good.
