Today will be the second sermon in our series leading up to Christmas Day…as we look at different aspects of who Jesus is. Who is this child born in a manger of a virgin mother…and why was He born?
Last week we looked at…the beginning…Genesis 3 15...
And we saw the powerful promise…that JEsus is the one who will crush Satan’s skull...
That after the fall…after the deception of woman and the sin of Adam…God curses Satan…and that curse includes the gospel truth that one day one will come to put an end to the devil…and that satan skull crrusher is Jesus!
God told Satan...

Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
And we know He is Jesus!
Today I want to look brifly at Isaiah 7 and then land in Isaiah 9…most specifically verses 6-7...
What is interesting about Genesis 43 and Isaiah and the entire Chrstian message is this…think of Genesis 3 15...
What a glorious truth…Jesus will come to crush the enemy…but notice that this powerful promise is in the midst of what seems like disaster…the fall…even ate of the fruit…man did nothing about it and worse he ate of it himself…and out of that horrible news…God gives us hope in the news that he will send His Son to save His people from sin and Satan!
And what we see in Isaiah in similar…we get these promises of a coming one…a Savior…a savior…and these promises come in the midst of disaster...
When you enter into Isaiah 7 An evil king is over Judah…King Ahaz…and the kings of the north are plotting to take him out…and so the King of Judah does the unthinkable…he joins forces with a pagan nation…which God has specifically forbid...
God sends the prophet Isaiah to to Ahaz and tells Isaiah him…God knows this is happening…and then he tells the king to ask for a sign from the Lord…so he will know the Lord will not let the let the 2 kings of the north conquer Judah...
But Ahaz refuses to listen…he has already made up his mind…he refuses to ask for a sign from the Lord...
And we get this...

Isaiah 7:14 ESV
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
God is telling King Ahaz…I will presee Judah…even if I have to do it miraculoisly I will preseve the line of David…I will sent the one...
God has promised David...“David, you’ll always have a man on the throne. Your kingdom will never end.”
And now through the prophet Isaiah God is saying...
If I have to bring the one from a virgin…I will do it…and the one born of a virgin will be God with us!
What a promise! In the midst of crisis in the garden God promised to send a son born of woman that would crush the skull of Satan...
And now chaos…Judah about to be attacked…but the Messiah must come from Judah…the king of Judah about to partner with pagans...
And God sends a promise...
Isaiah 7:14 ESV
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
And so when the angel comes to Joseph to tell him that Mary is pregnant with Jesus the Messiah...
The angel tells Joseph...
Matthew 1:22–23 ESV
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
And so we see God will send a savior that will crush the skull of Satan…God will send a Son born of a virgin…and He will be…He is…God with us...
And when you get to Isaiah 9 Isreal is in a crisis again…they are not living by faith…they are following idols…God warns the prophet Isaiah not to follow those who are of Isreal…becasue jusgment is coming for them...
God to Isaiah...

Isaiah 8:12–15 ESV
12 “Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. 13 But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14 And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.”
When God’s people turn their back on God’s ways…and think they can worship and follow God their way…and yet still be saved by God…God brings this kind of judgement...
Then God gives Isaiah an instruction...
SLIDE
Isaiah 8:16 ESV
16 Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching among my disciples.
Judgment is coming for those ho call themslves my people but are not…so hold hast to the Word…protect the Word…among those who are true disciples...
God had said he will send a Satan skull crusher…and that He will one day send a baby born of a virgin who will be God with us...
And now here in Isaiah 9 God sends another promise in the midts of crisis of faith and falseness among those who think they are His but are not...

Isaiah 9:1–7 ESV
1 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. 2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. 3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. 4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 5 For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
God’s powerful promising Word to us His church this morning...
Isreal is worshipping idols…hope is fading…will God really send the seed of woman…will true victory ever come? And in the midst of that we get this prophecy from Isaiah…and again a prophecy about a child to be born...
Born of woman to crush Satan...
Born of a virgin to be God with us...
And now this...
Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Another promise...
Let’s look at a few things befoer we dig into verses 6 and 7...
It starts with a promise of eventiual joy…full joy…there will be no gloom…some day…in the future…for her was in anguish...
And then notice it is written in the past tense for part of it…in the former time...
Interetting right…why speak a prohecy in the past tense?
Because the prophecy is so certain to happen that the prophet can spoeak as though it has happenend...
They are in gloom and darkness…and there is a promise…joy is coming…gloom will be no more…
God will make a way…verse 1…God will make a way…after the nation is brought into contempt…judgement…there will be joy…and the way to joy will be reveelaed...
And even a mention of Galilee...
Then what will God do when He sends this son?
V2 The people who walked in darkness see great light…on them the light has shone...
V3 The nation will be multiplied…no longer simply the small remnant but from that small number…many...
And this will cause great joy...
V4 Speaks of deliverance…no longer under oppression no more burden...
V5 Speaks of vengance and victory…no more losing the War…the war will be won…and how...
Who will accpmplish all ofthese things?

Isaiah 9:6 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
We saw in Genesis 3 that God’s promose to save His peoples was a child…a son…to be born of woman to come and crush the skill of Satan...
We saw in Isaiah 7 that God’s promise to save His people was a child…born of a virgin…a son...
And now we see that God’s promise to save His people is a child …a son...
And what do the angels proclaim in Luke 2 after Jesus has been born...
Luke 2:11 ESV
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
This Savior who is the Messiah and the Lord…Jesus...
In Isaiah 9 we learn more about this child that had to be born…thus child born of a virgin in the line of David…born of woman...
What do we need to see today from verses 6 and 7 to point us to many beatiful and powerful truths about Jesus and His birth?
Well first we must see that...
Truth #1 - The Messiah will be born of woman.
For to us a child is born
He had to be born…
Don’t miss this…this ultimate Savior…this mesaiah…comes as a baby…a born baby...
This is no small detail...that son of a virgin...
Is this child to be born of a woman…the one ofthe first promise to be of the seed of Eve...
We are sinners who cannot pay for our own sin…if one is to come and pay our penalty that one must be human…one like us…and so Jesus…the messiah…we are told 700 years before He is born…will be born of woman...
God with us born of a virgin here given to us born of woman…a child…born…a son…a baby boy will come to save you...
Luke 2:11 ESV
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
Philippians 2:8 ESV
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Truth #2 - The Messiah will be given by the Father.
To us a son is given.
The baby boy that will be born is the Son of God who is given by God.
So Immanuel God with is....is the Son of David that was promised and the Son of God given to us...
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
We both truths…a child born and a Son given in the NT...
Galatians 4:4 ESV
4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,
John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
This Word…was in the beginning…with God…and is God…the Son of God...
Given by God…to dave the poeple of God...
So we see Jesus in His humanity…a child born and His deity…the eternal son Given...
Jesus the one Peter says was forknown before the foundation ofthe World...
Jesus the Son of God who said to God rhe Father in John 17...
John 17:5 ESV
5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
Jesus the Son of God from eternity past…given by the Father…so save the people of God...
We will se more of this next week in Psalm 2 where we are told...
Psalm 2:7 ESV
7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.
So as a man He can be our substitue...
But as the eternal Son of God…the perfect Son of God…who is God with us...
He can pay the full penalty…the eternal in infinite penaly for all the sins of all those whom He came to save...
We remember the Angel to Joseph...
Matthew 1:21 ESV
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
And He can save us his people from their sins…because he is one of us…born of woman…and He is God with us…given by the Father as the eternal Son of God…so come save us from our sins...
Why are his people that Jesus came to save?
Gospel
Before I go on...
Respond
Who is this child to be born? Who is this given Son?
Truth #3 - The Messiah will be the Ruler of all!
The government shall be upon his shoulder.
All rule and authority will be His…any burden and or need can be cast upon Him and taken care of by Him...
This messiah will rule all and rule once anf for all...
Where is Jesus now? Ruling and rigning at the right hand...
What will happen when Jesus returns?
Every knee will bow...
And what will Jesus do for all eternity?
And what will we who persevere to the end and are saved by him do when he rules? We will rule with Him...
Revelation 2:26–27 ESV
26 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father.
How much authoruty ois on His shoulders...
Matthew 28:18 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
This was sealed at His resurrection anda scnention...
Ephesians 1:20–22 ESV
20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,
He is the king of kigns...
And this child who will be born…this Son of God who will be given…
Will bear the Kingship over all and for all time...
Of His rule there will be no end...
And this everlasting King will go by many names…we have seen that He shall be called Immanuel…God with us...
Jesus…savior of God’s people...
The Son of God…the Seed of Eve…the Satan Skull crusher…will be the all powerful and forever King!
And now we get 4 other names of this coming Messiah King...
SLIDE
Truth #4 - The Messiah King will be called Wonderful Counselor.
What a wonderful name for Jesus and for us to see as we are studying the book of Proverbs on Wednesday nights...
Jesus is the wisdom of God…Jesus is the Word of God meaning He us the logos of God…the very logic of God...
And so when we need help or wisdom to whom do we go?
Jesus our wonderful counselor...
Wonderful - the Hebrew word translated wonderful in an interesting word…the word Pele...
It means something even more wonderful than the way we commonly use the word wonderful...
It means…something more like miraculous...
Definition - something of extraordinary nature that is so mysterious that it is difficult to comprehend.
Miraculous…wonderful…full of wonder...
For example in the song of Moses in Ex 15 Moses sings...
Exodus 15:11 ESV
11 “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?
There is that word…what kind of wonders has Moses just seen God do…some of the most wondrous things that have ever been done in a short span of time in all of history...
Miraculous wonders...
The ten plagues.
The passover
Pilar of cloud and fire
The parting of the Red Sea.
Our God is a wonderful God…a God of awesome wonders!
And Here we are told the coming messiah will be a Wonderful…miraculous counselor...
Counselor - this is much more like we use it…an advisor…someone that helps with problems...
Jesus is the wisdom of God…We are also told by the psalmist in Psalm 119 that His word if full of wonders...
Psalm 119:129 ESV
129 Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them.
This coming messiah…unlike the foolish King Ahaz....the Messiah that is to come…will have all of the divine wisdom of God…His ways are always the right ways…His commands are always helpful and when we obey His counsel He leads us out of trouble and to he way of everlasting life...
Therefore in the great commission we are told to teach each other to obey everything Jesus commanded...
Why because His ways are always right…all of His way all of the time...
So we should listen to Jesus our Wonderful Counselor…
Colossians 2:3 ESV
3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
SLIDE
Truth #5 - The Messiah King will be called Mighty God.
The baby born of a virgin…the Son given…Immanuel - God with us…will be called...
Mighty God!
Mighty - this is a fun word...gee-boar…it means manly…a strong hero…physically strong...
It is sometimes translated…man…or warrior…or even champion...
The messiah will be a manly warrior champion God...
Again pointing to His divinity...
Because this messiah...
John 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Or Paul says in Titus to that we are...
Titus 2:13 ESV
13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
And of course Jude...
Jude 25 ESV
25 to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
And here we see that this coming messiah…this child to born who is the given Son of God...
Will be called a mighty..manly…warrior God!
Hebrews 1 says this of the Son of God...
Hebrews 1:8 ESV
8 But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
What a mighty warrior God is this messiah King…our king Jesus!!
Amen!?
Truth #6 - The Messiah King will be called Eternal Father.
This is one I want to be careful with because there are many since the beginning of the church who have got this wrong and fallen into heresy becaue of this concept...
Including some in our day…some that you know...
And so how can the coming messiah King be the Son of God…and yet called by the name Eternal Father?
The heresy here is called modalism…the idea that Jesus is just one mode of God…and the Spirit is another mode…and the Father another…almost like God is a transfomer…where he just moves around and changes form…and the answer to this idea is…no…false...
As I said...Heresies in regards to the relationship of the Father and Son have come against the church since Jesus walked the earth...
Jake Flaming brought to my attention another story about these arguments over who is the Son of God in relationship to God the father…a bit different than modalism...
In AD 325 Emperor Constantine convened the Council of Nicaea, the very first ecumenical council. More than 300 bishops came from all over the Christian world to debate the nature of the Holy Trinity. It was one of the early church's most intense theological questions. Arius, from Egypt, was teaching that Jesus the Son was not equal to God the Father. Arius forcefully argued his position at length. The bishops listened respectfully.
As Arius vigorously continued, Nicholas became more and more agitated. Finally, he could no longer bear what he believed was essential being attacked. The outraged Nicholas got up, crossed the room, and slapped Arius across the face! The bishops were shocked. It was unbelievable that a bishop would lose control and be so hotheaded in such a solemn assembly. They brought Nicholas to Constantine. Constantine said even though it was illegal for anyone to strike another in his presence, in this case, the bishops themselves must determine the punishment.
The bishops stripped Nicholas of his bishop's garments, chained him, and threw him into jail. That would keep Nicholas away from the meeting. When the Council ended a final decision would be made about his future.
There is more to the story and who knows if it is even true…all this to say…getting the relationship between the Father and Son right is a big deal...
So this passage is not confusing or conflating the coming Messiah King with God the Father...
So the words translated everlasting father here are the word for forever…and the word for father…but the word for father is a very common word with many usages...
It is used in the OT over 1200 times...
So what does it mean here that Jesus…the Messiah King will be called Everlasting Father...
This is not saying that the Son of God and the Father God are the same trinitarianally…I may have made that word up...
It is saying that Jesus…the coming child to be born…the given Son of God…will be forever…everlasting…never-ending…the Fatherly protector King that we need and that Isreal was searching for...
The coming King will be divinely eternal…and look over and protect His people as a Father does His children...
He will be called “Everlasting Father” because he will be the long awaited truly loving and protecting forever King that the people…us…we…God’s people need...
The perfect ruler…the eternal King...
He will be a king and His reign will never ever come to an end. “Everlasting Father” — a King whose reign will never end for His people.
King Jesus is the one who will perfectly reign over His people and our loving protector forever!
So this is more showing that the King will have the Fatherly attribute of God the Father…that will make Him the perfect everlasting King...
SLIDE
Truth #7 - The Messiah King will be called Prince of Peace.
What a promise to the true people of here in Isaiah’s day…Isreal is in in ruin…the Kingdom is divided…the King has sided with pagans…most of the people who would call themselves God’s people are living as the world and have many idols...
Which sounds a lot like our day…so what a promise to us...
This coming messiah in Isaiah 9 who we know to be Jesus…the baby born of Mary…the son begotten by God...
Is our prince of peace..
Jesus…our Shar…Shalom....
The Son of God…the Sovereign human born of woman representative of the Sovereign Father God...
Jesus our prince of peace....
Shalom...
Peace in the absence of war...
Prosperity and blessing in full satisfaction...
Jesus is the only one who can bring us true satisfaction…wholeness…reconciliation…full and eternal peace...
What kind of peace does Jesus give us while on this earth...
John 16:33 ESV
33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 14:27 ESV
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Luke 2:14 ESV
14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Then look how it ends...
Isaiah 9:7 ESV
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
This Messiah king will be king forever…justice will be served…His righteousness will reign forever…and who will make this happen...
YAHWEH…the Lord of hosts…and he is zealous to make this happen...
He will do it…and we know this because He has done it...
God has sent His son…born of a virgin woman…Jesus proved this is Him when He lived the perfect life of the Son of God...
Fulfilled every OT prophets that pointed us to Him...
Including His death on a cross for those who he came to save…and His resurrection to life...
This is all about Jesus because Jesus is alive...
So follow Jesus…
Return to how Isaiah 9:6 starts...
To us...
God did this for us…if you are saved God did this with you in mind...
Romans 5:1 ESV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
How...
Colossians 1:20 ESV
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Have you experienced the peace of God…through the blood of the cross…by repenting of your sin...
If you have than you can say...
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
And if this child born…Jesus the Son of God…if He is your savior and Lord…then...
Philippians 4:7 ESV
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Amen!?
