We've spoken over the quarter about God's promises… his promises of blessing when we give, about God's promise of heaven, about God's promise of the Holy Spirit, and God's promises for the future, and for guidance, and for energy, and for freedom from fear, and God's promise of abundant life. If you missed any of those, you can go online and listen to them because they're all about God's greatest gifts in your life.
And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.
This morning, we’re going to talk about God's promise of personal peace, a kind of peace in my heart that recognizes that God is there regardless of the circumstances, regardless of what I'm going through. Of all the promises in the Bible, and there are many about God's peace, I think the strongest might be Isaiah 54:10. I love the strength and power of this promise:
For the mountains may depart
and the hills be removed,
but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,
and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,”
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.
How to enjoy God’s promise of peace…
How to enjoy God’s promise of peace…
1. Make peace with God.
1. Make peace with God.
Therefore, because we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
20 And through Christ, God has brought all things back to himself again—things on earth and things in heaven. God made peace through the blood of Christ’s death on the cross.
2. Get rest for your body.
2. Get rest for your body.
And I gave them my Sabbath days of rest as a sign between them and me. It was to remind them that I am the Lord, who had set them apart to be holy.
It is useless for you to work so hard
from early morning until late at night,
anxiously working for food to eat;
for God gives rest to his loved ones.
A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body;
jealousy is like cancer in the bones.
3. Receive peace as a gift.
3. Receive peace as a gift.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.
4. Tell God what you need.
4. Tell God what you need.
6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
The principle of anything – Don’t worry about anything.
The principle of anything – Don’t worry about anything.
The principle of everything – Pray about everything.
The principle of everything – Pray about everything.
16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you his peace at all times and in every situation. The Lord be with you all.
5. Focus your thoughts on Jesus.
5. Focus your thoughts on Jesus.
3 You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.
33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
