he leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk in a dark ravine,
I do not fear71 evil, for you are with me;
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare before me a table in ethe presence of my enemies;
You anoint with oil my head; my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and kindness will pursue me all the days of my life,

PART III: COMMENTARY
I. Introduction: Form and Structure
Psalm 23 is a song of trust in I AM.
In the corpus of Psalms 15–24 it chiastically matches Psalm 16, also a song of trust (see Psalm 15: “Literary Context”).
God’s covenantal name for his relationship with Israel frames the psalm (vv.
1a, 6Ba).
The psalm consists of three vignettes (vv.
1–4, 5, 6).
The first two are extended metaphors, envisioning I AM’s relationship with the individual believer.
As in a drama, when the curtain lifts,
1. the stage is set for pastoral scenes, and I AM appearing as a shepherd.
After the curtain is dropped at the end of verse 4, the curtain is lifted a
2. second time in verse 5; this time I AM appears as the host preparing a banqueting table.
3. Once again, the curtain drops and opens in verse 6; this time, as reality replaces imagination, the psalmist is seen returning to I AM’s eternal house.

God is Jehovah.
The name of the independent, self-complete being—“I AM WHO I AM”—only belongs
to Jehovah God.
Our proper response to Him is to fall down in fear and awe of the One who possesses all authority.

In the morning he leads his sheep to green pastures and then, at noon, allows them to rest in the grassy pastures by cool and quiet waters.
