Introduction: How many people have ever been scared to try to have a Bible study with someone?
For someone who has never done one or has ever been successful is can be scary. Because no one ever wants to fail at anything in life.
It’s like working on your truck or boat or something for the first time, a lot of times people are scared because they don’t want to mess it up.
So, either we get someone to show us like a professional mechanic, or we hop on YouTube and watch a how to video.
How to videos are great for all kinds of things like mechanic work, cooking, fishing, whatever you could imagine is on there. And there is how to videos on all kinds of stuff.
But with Evangelism we don’t need to hop on YouTube to see how others do it.
We need to go to the professional, to the source, to our blueprint, being the Bible. The greatest evangelist we could turn too is Jesus Himself. And one of my favorite passages on Jesus’ evangelizing is when He starts His ministry in Luke chapter 4.
Please turn with me to Luke chapter 4.
First, we will see Jesus Ministered to People’s physical Needs (Luke 4:38-41).
Second, we will see Jesus Ministered to People’s Spiritual Needs (Luke 4:42-44).
Finally, we will see Jesus Ministering Changed People’s Lives (Luke 5:1-11).
Thesis: To be an effective evangelist we need to find the physical and spiritual needs of the people so we can get into a personal Bible study which can change their lives.
I. Jesus Ministered to People’s physical Needs (Luke 4:38-41).
a. Vs. 38-39A Notice He left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house.
i. She was sick with great high fever.
ii. They besought (requested) of Him concerning her.
iii. So, He stands over her and rebukes the fever which departs her.
b. Vs. 39B Notice her response:
i. Immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
1. She was so sick and down with a fever, and Jesus ministers to her and now she is ministering to others.
2. Minster is to serve or take care of some ones needs.
c. Vs. 40 Notice now the sun was setting.
i. It’s getting close to dark!!!
ii. Now “ALL” that were sick with any kind of disease were brought to Jesus.
iii. He Laid His hand on “ALL” of them.
iv. He healed “ALL” of them.
d. Vs. 41 The devils (demons) came out crying saying thou art the Christ the Son of God.
i.but Notice Jesus response: He rebuked them and did not allow them to speak, for they knew He was the Christ!!
e. Jesus showed compassion to all people. It did not matter where they stood politically, did not matter color of skin, language they spoke, the social status, He healed ALL.
i. While we cannot minister to people with miracles.
ii. We can minister to people by taking care of their needs.
iii. How we can Evangelize by showing compassion:
1. Hear someone just found out has cancer.
2. Hear someone got into car accident and disabled.
3. Hear someone just lost a loved one.
4. Hear someone just had their spouse up and leave them and the kids.
5. Hear someone’s house burned down or flooded.
6. These are all great opportunities to GO and see what we can do to help.
Show up and say Hi I'm Jesse Stuart with the Southwest Church of Christ and heard of the situation and would love to help.
Can I bring you food, mow your grass, cut the tree down that fell in yard. What can I do to help.
7. Luke 4:16-23,
a. Jesus reads Isaiah 61:1-2
b. Vs. 20 Jesus gave book to the minister (Should be ministering)
c. Vs. 23 They will in future say: Physician heal thyself and what you have done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.
d. Vs. 31-37 He goes to synagogue in Capernaum and ministers to man of unclean spirit.
e. Vs. 38-41 He goes and ministers to Simon’s mother-in-law and all with diseases
8. Jesus has been taking care of everyone’s physical needs, now He will focus in on the Spiritual needs seen next!!
II. Jesus Ministered to People’s Spiritual Needs (Luke 4:42-44).
a. Vs. 42 When it was day!
i. It’s the next day after healing all those with diseases at sunset.
ii. Now He departed and went to a deserted place. (Mark 1:35).
1. Jesus was a man of prayer.
2. How do we start off our day?
iii. The people tried to get Him to stay and not leave them.
iv. But notice Jesus’ response “I must preach the Kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.” And He preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
v. In Luke 2:49 “I must be about the Father’s business”. Now I must preach about the Kingdom of God.
vi. Jesus’ fame was going throughout the country Luke 4:37.
vii. He had been ministering to people and showing them compassion and now He is ministering them the Word of God. A lot of times we want to tell people about Jesus but notice Jesus says preach the Kingdom of God.
viii. We cannot separate Jesus and the Kingdom.
ix. This preaching simply means to announce, proclaim, to spread the good news.
x. When we are talking to people, we need to tell them about the good news, sometimes Christians want to tell people more about the bad news, by condemning them ang their sins.
when we need to be talking about the Kingdom and the great Physician, and let the Bible speak to them. Show them in a Bible study what sin is and the result of it.
xi. But Jesus started with compassion, now people are willing to listen.
xii.Quote “People don’t care how much you know till they see how much you care.” Show people through compassion and then they may care what you got to say.
1. How to Evangelize:
a. Proclaim the good news. Give people something they want to be part of, not condemning them of things they do not know are wrong.
b. First it starts with relationships.
c. We must get involved in people’s lives.
d. Once a friendship is started invite them out to eat lunch so you can get to know them better, find out their interests.
e. If they like football, say would you like to come over Monday night and watch the game and have some burgers.
f. After game try to get in religious conversation, if it goes good say would you like to have a Bible study with us while sitting at the dinner table.
g. Try an organized Bible study!! Don’t have to try and come up with something on your own. And the worst thing they can do is tell you no.
But if people truly see how much you care about them, they see how happy you are as a Christian, and how your different from the rest of the world, they may want to learn why.
2. Jesus Ministered through compassion, He Ministered to them about the good news. Now we will see the affect it had on people’s lives.
III. Jesus Ministering Changed People’s Lives (Luke 5:1-11).
a. Vs. 1-2 People are wanting to hear Gods Word.
i. Notice people are Pressed upon Him to hear the Word of God.
ii. Have you ever had people pressed upon you to hear Gods Word.
iii. Jesus’ ministering both physically and spiritually has got people hungry and thirsty for the Word of God.
b. Vs. 3 Fishermen are willing to hear Gods Word.
i. He enters into Peters ship! Luke 4:38 Entered Simons house.
1. Jesus has been in this man’s house, now he is at his Job siting in his boat, teaching them: The Fathers Business, the Kingdom, Gods Word.
c. Vs. 4-7 Now Jesus going to teach fishermen how powerful God is:
i. Vs. 4 When He finished teaching, He tells them to put their nets down to go for a draught, to go fishing.
ii. Vs. 5 Look at Simon response even though they fished all night and caught nothing they listened to Him.
iii. Vs. 6-7 The great catch.
1. Nets began to break.
2. They signal the other boat.
3. Boats begin to sink.
4. It was clearly a miracle; they just witnessed the largest catch of their lives.
d. Vs. 8-10 Fisherman are repenting.
i. Vs. 8 Peter falls to His knees, but vs, 10 says so also James and John, which are the sons of Zebedee.
ii. Jesus gives them comforting words: “fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.”
Follow the pattern!!!! There may be days we get skunked.
e. Vs. 11 Fishermen are willing to forsake all and follow Him.
i. They just witnessed the largest catch of their lives but not even worried to see how much it was going to bring at market. They follow Jesus, leave their jobs, family, retirement and all.
ii. What are we willing to do for Jesus? Luke 9:23; Rom 12:1-2
iii. How to evangelize: We need to show compassion by ministering to people.
iv. We need to teach people about the Kingdom, teach them Gods Word, but do it with Love being like Jesus.
v. We need to get people in passage like Luke 4 and 5 and show them how Gods Word changed people’s lives.
vi. But don’t just show them the Scriptures, live the Scriptures, if people see that we truly care about them, they see we are living the Christian life 24/7, they can see Christ in us, they too will hunger and thirst for God’s Word.
Show them you are the light and salt of the world.
Tacklebox!!!!
Conclusion: We see here Luke records the greatest evangelist who ever lived on this earth.
He set the blueprint for the Apostles and for us today.
But notice Jesus lived His sermon, he went around ministering to people needs both physically and spiritually.
He showed compassion first, but He also went to the sinners. He went in their homes, community, and even workplace. He found ways to relate with people and taught them about God, His Kingdom, and His Word.
We need to follow Jesus by following His pattern and get out into our communities, get involved in people’s lives, start friendships, with one goal in mind and that is to save their souls.
Jesus came to seek and save the lost and to be about the Fathers business.
We need to do the same.
First, we saw Jesus Ministered to People’s physical Needs.
Second, we saw Jesus Ministered to People’s Spiritual Needs.
Finally, we saw Jesus Ministering Changed People’s Lives.
Have you been following the pattern Jesus gave us?
