Main Proposition:
Statement of Doctrine or Application
Love For Your Neighbor
Intro:
Statement of proposition
How can we love our neighbors?
We can start by not killing them, right?
How can we love our neighbors?
Other texts that support
Exodus 20:13 ESV
13 “You shall not murder.
Deuteronomy 5:17 ESV
17 “ ‘You shall not murder.
Basically saying that you shall not kill unlawfully
Why does this matter?
As we get into this doctrine we need to break down a few things that pertain to this commandment
First off, A positive application would be to preserve your own life and, to the best of your abilities, the lives of others.
for example, does it violate this commandment is we were to parachute for fun, go bungee jumping or something where the parachute doesn’t open or the bungee cable breaks?
Another question, is self defense appropriate?
What other questions do you think is important to answer when talking about this commandment?
What other observations do you think needs to be made when we are talking about the sixth commandment?
One example that I thought was funny was that in the Mennonite tradition since the reformation that self-defense is forbidden by Jesus’ command to “turn the other cheek”.
Individually or by a foreign government
At the time of his arrest, he admonished a disciple to put away his sword. Would you say that this could be applied to us here today as we discuss the sixth commandment?
Is war forbidden by this commandment?

Main Point #1: As Christians We Must Respect Life

Statement
Not just respect life we must respect all life
This includes babies that are in the womb
We must add that as a point of importance because when we hear “Thou shalt not kill” our first train of thought is people that are grown and mature like us here in this room and others that we will see and talk to after this.
We must respect life because God is the Lord of life. God is the one that has the power, authority and control to give life and to take life.
Prove
Genesis 1:30 ESV
30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
Genesis 2:7 ESV
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
After the fall, what is one word that we can use to summarize the result of Adam’s Fall: Death
What are the two types of death that we will face in our lifetimes?
Death like life, is physical and spiritual. Physical death ends our participation here in earthly life
Spiritual death is a loss of fellowship with God, the Lord of Life.
WITHOUT GOD WE WILL NEVER FACE PHYSICAL OR SPIRITUAL LIFE
NOBODY WOULD BE HERE IN THIS ROOM LISTENING TO THIS AMAZING LESSON WITHOUT GOD’S GRACE AND LOVE. LET’S THINK AND REFLECT ON THAT FOR A SECOND.
IT WAS NOT BY ACCIDENT THAT WE ARE IN HERE.
Unless interrupted by God’s grace, spiritual death leads to eternal death, the permanent separation from God and therefore from His blessing John 3:36
John 3:36 ESV
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
God delights in life. We can see the seriousness and a measure of the greatness of salvation that in Christ death is swallowed up by life 2 Corinthians 5:4
2 Corinthians 5:4 ESV
4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
Our attitude towards life and death is an important issue.
The sixth Commandment says that both life and death are God’s business.
He is the Lord of our life and death and we may not take life without his authorization.

Apply or Confront
Our happiness over God’s happiness.
My priorities over God’s priorities.
My plans over God’s plans.
This is a broken mindset that will leave you empty inside.

Main Point #2: War and Punishment

Statement
War and punishment often involve the shedding of blood, taking the life of another person, etc. What does the Bible say about killing in times of war?
Prove
The sixth commandment does not forbid all killing. It forbids the killing that is illegitimate according to the law, killing not authorized by God.
Punishment allows us to put teeth into the concept of authority.
Authority cannot function well unless there are consequences for those who disobey.
Where do we see this kind of authority? family, church, state, schools, businesses, sports teams.
Motives for Punishment:
Deterrence:
Society punishes an offender (We punish thieves in the hope that others will be deterred from stealing. Similar to murder, tax evaders, slanderers, etc.
Reformation
Punishment not to deter others in society, but for that individuals own good.
Church discipline has the goal of restoration
1 Corinthians 5:5 ESV
5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
Paul wants the deliverer to be saved as a result of this discipline, so that he does not have to suffer eternal punishment.
When this person comes to repentance, Paul is asking for the Corinthians to forgive him and comfort him
Restraint
This happens when hope of reformation is lost
Exodus 12:19 ESV
19 For seven days no leaven is to be found in your houses. If anyone eats what is leavened, that person will be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a sojourner or a native of the land.
Exodus 30:33 ESV
33 Whoever compounds any like it or whoever puts any of it on an outsider shall be cut off from his people.’ ”
If Somebody asks
Capital Punishment
Deuteronomy 17:12 ESV
12 The man who acts presumptuously by not obeying the priest who stands to minister there before the Lord your God, or the judge, that man shall die. So you shall purge the evil from Israel.
Leviticus 24:17 ESV
17 “Whoever takes a human life shall surely be put to death.
War
It is difficult to discuss war in the context of Sola Scriptura because Scripture says very little about the actual ethics of warfare.
It does recognize war as a result of sin
James 4:1–2 ESV
1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.

Main Point #3: As Christians we MUST Protect Life

Statement
Here we are going to see how the world cannot keep anything straight
Liberal secularists tend to oppose killing it war and capital punishment, but accept abortion and euthanasia
Prove
The Bible does not mention abortion specifically, but it does speak about the value of unborn children.
Here is the thing. There are some people that will pick a dog or cat over a baby.
There are some people if they had to choose between me and their dog I am dead.
Exodus 21:22–25 ESV
22 “When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
Case A: no harm
Case B: harm
Case C: equal protection for both mother and child
No distinction based on the age of the baby
Psalm 72:12–14 ESV
12 For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper. 13 He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. 14 From oppression and violence he redeems their life, and precious is their blood in his sight.
Psalm 82:3–4 ESV
3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
Arguably the unborn are the weakest, poorest, most helpless people that there are.
They do not have voices to plead their own case.
Application:
God is the king of life and he is the only one that can give or take life.
Be thankful that he has given every single one of us life
Christian’s must protect life
There will come a time in your life when you are going to be presented with an opportunity to speak your case against the life of an unborn child
Are you going to keep quiet or are you going to fight for life
