Remember the Titans at the Columbus football game
Before big events, you hear “rally cries”
fight and you may die. Run and you'll live at least a while and dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom.

God is Holy & His Holiness is Revealed in His Commands
TEACH: Deuteronomy 6:1-4
1 “Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it,
Moses has just given them the 10 Commandments, they r 1
10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.
These aren’t a list of things Moses wants for the people to do, these are the commands of God for His people
2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.
God is calling for obedience from His people, and says why
Obedience to Lord produces the fear of the Lord
The Mosaic covenant was conditional, if obey = blessing, if disobey = curse
Throughout Deuteronomy, God tells the people to obey Him, for if they do, they will be blessed in the land
3x Moses say to obey in this text:
1 “Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it,
2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.
3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
When we obey God, we come to learn the fear of God — Deuteronomy 6:2
2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.
All of this is because of the holiness of God
The reason that we obey is because God is set apart
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
God’s shown repeatedly, He is distinct from all gods
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other,
besides me there is no God;
I equip you, though you do not know me,
6 that people may know, from the rising of the sun
and from the west, that there is none besides me;
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
7 I form light and create darkness;
I make well-being and create calamity;
I am the Lord, who does all these things.
PREACH: Obedience leads to the Fear of God
If obeying leads to the fear of the Lord, how are you doing
If you feel distant from God, are you obeying God?
Live Holy Lives for the Holy God
TEACH: Deuteronomy 6:5
5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Back in Deuteronomy 6:3, God called to hear & obey
3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
Mosaic covenant/ condition, New Covenant/unconditional
It is easy for us to take unconditional to mean no obeying
We preach profession and not confession
Profession → saying that Jesus is Lord, simply an utterance of your lips
Confession → believing Jesus is Lord, having a transformed life by the Spirit
Isaiah 29:13 — they are professing, no heart change
13 And the Lord said:
“Because this people draw near with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
while their hearts are far from me,
and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
John 3:36 — Jesus equates belief w/obedience
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
John 14:15 — love Jesus = keep commandments
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
How do we keep the commandments of God?
5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
Jesus tells us Matthew 22:36-39
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Jesus goes on to say Matthew 22:40
40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
This is what the 10 Commandments deal with
1-4 — Loving God more than anything
5-10 — Loving your neighbor
PREACH — Hear and Respond, God calls for Action
But we have such a messed up view of love in our culture
I love steak, Isaiah, Heather, Texas football
The way that we define love is by looking at the source of love 1 John 4:7-12, John 14:15
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Love is not utterance of words, but displays of action
My claims to love me, actions don’t show they do
Disciple the Next Generation
TEACH: Deuteronomy 6:6-9
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Moses just witnessed an entire generation die for their sins
He’s even able to look ahead and see the danger for this one
10 “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. 14 You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you— 15 for the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.
How do we not do that? Deuteronomy 6:6
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
Moses is commanding them to meditate on God’s Word
Psalm 119 = 176 vs on the beauty & benefit of Bible
Modern meditation is emptying mind, God calls for us to fill our mind with Him and His Word
How can you fill your mind with what you don’t know? How can you know what you aren’t in?
How can you teach what you don’t know?
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
If you are a parent, you are called to disciple kids
You are to train them up in God’s Word
The church isn’t the main source to teach them, the school system isn’t, their peers aren’t, their mentors aren’t, their parents are
Talk about His Word in the car, on vacation, while shopping, before bed, after rising, all the time
It’s not just talk though, it’s modeling too
Deuteronomy 6:8 hand/action, eyelet/thoughts — everything should example
8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
PREACH — How are you talking/modeling?
How are you doing at training up your children in the Word of God?
You’re here, that’s applaudable, but it doesn’t stop here
Summary
How much time are you investing in your children daily?
Average father spends…. (THANK TEACHERS@CHURCH)
When you look at your priorities, what you are demonstrating to your kids is most important, what are they?
Being the best athlete, or being the best person of God?
They are looking to you, their parent, to see what truly matters in life, what is it you are teaching them?
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
