And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
(Calling Matthew ^^ / eats & drinks with them)
The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
(Difference between him & John / friend of them)
and again here at the top of Ch. 15 / pharisees a third time, but this time he receives them and eats with them.
(cf. )
v. 1
Now -
the tax collectors and sinners -
all - hyperbolic, not literal but appears to be. exaggerating with great intentionality to express the extent.
drawing near - periphrastic: imperfect & present. This was a regularity in Jesus’ ministry. It happened over and over and over again, with great frequency and consistency. A habitual experience.
to hear him. - Luke 14:35***
v. 2
the Pharisees and the scribes -
grumbled - (cf. ; , ; ; )
receives - present indicative, “in a friendly manner” BDAG, (cf. ; ), “accept” or “welcome”, he isn’t merely tolerating or enduring them; he’s completely embracing them & making them at home. the word used is MOSTLY used to express anticipation and excitement at the reception of something.
sinners - those who have lived uneffected by God’s commands, intentionally or unintentionally. Juxtaposed against the P&S… Seems to be the point, right?
and eats with - (cf. ; ; ; )
