Intro:

The passage we are going to see today is a very important passage that helps us understand the history of mankind and the history of salvation.
Here we see original sin and where it started.
But even more importantly we will see righteousness that is imputed (given or placed upon) to us.
Many people want to read this passage and think it is all about sin but that is missing the main point of the passage.
Today we will go and knock on the door of Adam and try and get a grasp on how sin came into the world and then how Jesus is our last Adam.
Many people come to this passage and immediately think “original sin” (Adam’s sin).
But what we have to understand is that this its focus is not on sin, it focuses on righteousness and life.
Let’s turn to and look at our history.

I. Humanity’s Ruin -

Romans 5:12–13 KJV 1900
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
By one man sin entered the world.
Talk about theology that will last through the ages, Paul used Abraham in and now he goes to Adam in
Thanks to Adam sin entered into the world.
Something to notice here is that Adam wasn’t the first one to sin.
Eve was the one that initially listened and obeyed the voice of the enemy.
It is interesting how God always expects the man of the house to lead the home in the direction it should go.
This is no doubt a privilege but it is also a responsibility and we see that here no doubt about it.
Look at what says.
1 Timothy 2:14 KJV 1900
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
Adam made a decision to follow her leadership instead of teaching her and leading her to follow that which God said.
Sin entered the world under one man.
Adam did not bring death into the world, he brought sin into the world and sin brought death.
But death is what went from Adam to humanity.
The key to it is that all of us and all of humanity sins.
Slide The Trespass
Then he says that sin was put on people’s account once the law came.
The question that naturally arises then is whether those between Adam and Moses were truly under sin or not?
The answer to that is something we have already seen in
Romans 2:12–15 KJV 1900
For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
He told the Gentiles that they didn’t have the law but they would be judged by what they knew was right and decided not to do.
In the same way those that were before the law of Moses may not have had the law that told them specifically what sin was they still knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that they were not even following what they knew was right.
They had new years resolutions as well.
By ONE every person that is a child of Adam has now been born into sin.
The good news is that this is only for those that are his sons and daughters.
Except that is all of us.
Doesn’t sound fair does it?
ONE man making all of us deal with the payment for sin.
Be careful coming to that conclusion though as you read on because another thing that isn’t fair is the other ONE that this passage will tell us about.
Some time life being unfair really stinks but you are about to see that we don’t get what we deserve which is also unfair.
speaks of the type of Christ that we find in Genesis at creation.
Romans 5:14 KJV 1900
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
Death reigned from Adam to Moses still even for those that didn’t sin exactly like Adam did.
But death is a result of sin so it continued to reign.
Then he wraps up the verse saying that he (Adam) was the figure (type) of him that was to come.
Then he wraps up the verse saying that he (Adam) was the figure (type) of him that was to come.
Adam came from the earth but the last Adam (Christ) came from heaven.
1 Corinthians 15:47 KJV 1900
The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
The first Adam was king of the old creation, while the last Adam is King over the new creation.
Genesis 1:26–27 KJV 1900
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV 1900
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
The first Adam was tested in a perfect garden and disobeyed God while the last Adam was tested in a terrible wilderness and obeyed God in the garden of Gethsemane.
The disobedience of the first Adam brought sin, condemnation, and death upon the human race, but the obedience of the last Adam brought righteousness, salvation, and life to all who will believe.
Through the first Adam, death and sin reign in this world but through the Last Adam grace reigns and because of that believers can reign in life.
Romans 5:15–19 KJV 1900
But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

II. Humanity’s Rescue -

He starts in saying not only the offence but also the free gift works this way.
Romans 5:15 KJV 1900
But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
The offence of one and many are dead.
MUCH MORE the grace of God.
What amazing words found here in this verse.
Yes there is bad news, Adam brought death but now there is THE REST OF THE STORY!
Just like one man brought the trespass, one man also brought the gift of Grace when we respond in faith.
Slide The Gift
MUCH MORE the grace of God and the GIFT by GRACE.
Much more the gift of grace.
Oh and by the way that is also through one man, Jesus Christ.
And that has also abounded to many.
Adam not only introduced sin to the world but it allowed death to literally rule the world.
show us that the way sin came into the world and the way that justification (salvation) come are different.
Romans 5:16–17 KJV 1900
And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
He says 1 sinned and that was the cause and judgment was brought by one to condemnation.
The gift
BUT the free gift is all about a lot of sin but that brings us to justification.
Because of one mans’s sin death reigned (was king).
Adam not only introduced sin to the world but this allowed death to literally rule the world.
Nothing can break free from its grip.
MUCH MORE again those that receive abundance of grace and the GIFT of RIGHTEOUSNESS will REIGN in LIFE by one as well. Jesus Christ.
One man brought the condemnation of sin and then the other brought a GIFT.
Pay attention to what he says though.
Because of this gift of righteousness we shall reign in life.
I hope you get that and what it implies and what it means.
tells us the same thing.
John 10:10 KJV 1900
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
Some of our lives and our Facebook looks like life is just too much and that we cannot EVEN......
He gave us this gift, ABUNDANCE of grace and the gift of Righteousness and we will reign in life, not because of how powerful we are or what we know.
We will reign in life because of one.
Jesus Christ.
No matter what we go through we reign in life knowing that we know the King of Kings.
We all know people that think that they have made it in life.
We hear them talk about what it takes to be successful like them.
We all think IF we were to have the money of those on Shark Tank that we would make great investors just the same.
We sincerely believe that if we were given a leg up in life that we would be great as well.
Not just financially but in every aspect of life.
Welcome to the LEG UP club this morning.
You have been given a leg up that assures you reigning in life.
Not a life without problems but a life where you know that you will succeed in life or death because we have been declared righteous.
So can I encourage you to leave today knowing what you have been promised and asking you to live as if it was true?
It is time that having the salvation that Jesus alone gives us makes us walk in a way where we know that we reign in life not only in death.
OWN LIFE
makes the comparison one more time between Adam and Christ.
Romans 5:18–19 KJV 1900
Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
By one mans sin judgment came to all and then are condemned.
But in the same way the righteousness of one, the FREE gift came upon all men for justification.
The gift to all men.
Gifts are only received if we accept and open them.
So all who receive this gift have justification.
How do we receive?
We believe!
Because of that many will be made righteous.

III. Humanity’s Reign -

Romans 5:20–21 KJV 1900
Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
These last two verses found in are amazing and of such relief to anyone who has been a Christian for any amount of time.
Law came in and because of that the offense abounded.
We now know what sin is and it is even bigger than we thought it was.
But where sin abounded, GRACE did much more abound.
This was seen in its most appalling demonstration in the rejection of Jesus as Messiah with the cry, “Crucify him, crucify him.”
When the leaders of the Jews said “let his blood be on us and our children.”
Sin overflowed the banks of what we could ever imagine.
This is the story of the children of Adam.
While this sin was abounding “grace abounded much more.”
The very acts and attitudes of sin that nailed him to the Cross were being dealt with in grace by his willingness to be crucified.
The cross in its horrendous reality is a demonstration of overwhelming grace.
Sin at its blackest moment on Calvary was touched by grace at its most golden hour.
When the soldiers hammered in the nails, sin was abounding, but when the Jesus said, “Father, forgive them,” grace was abounding much more.
One of the thieves who insulted Him engaged in sin that sent him to the cross, but lived long enough to hear superabounding grace say, “Today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
Wh
What a privilege to live in this truth.
Paul felt that he was the chief of sinners but his grace did abound even more.
How long did you have to be saved until you messed up?
How long were you saved before you were there sinning again as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
We didn’t receive forgiveness for what we have done we received justification.
We live knowing that when sin abounds in our life Grace does MUCH MORE abound.
The grace of God has no end.
Sam Duncannan, was a simple man that had a great desire to do something for the Lord.
So he made it his practice to cut out pictures from cards and magazines and to paste on to these pictures appropriate verses and poems, and then to give these simple gifts to those he felt would be blessed by them.
One day, Sam came across a picture of Niagara Falls, but for a long time could find no poem appropriate for this picture.
Then he heard Sankey sing a hymn and knew he had found the poem he had been looking for.
Sankey’s hymn went like this:
Have you on the Lord believed?
Still there’s more to follow.
Of His grace have you received?
Still there’s more to follow.
Oh, the grace the Father shows,
Still there’s more to follow;
Freely He His grace bestows,
Still there’s more to follow.
More and more and more and more,
Always more to follow;
Oh, His matchless, boundless love,
Still there’s more to follow!
Underneath his picture of Niagara Falls, Sam wrote these lines and titled the picture: “More to Follow!”
What better illustration could there be of the abundant supply of God’s grace! “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.”
Verse 21 says that SIN REIGNED, do you remember when that was the truth in your life?
Sin was the King.
but now GRACE REIGNS (not past tense) through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Our LORD, our King, the one we serve because Grace reigns.

Conclusion:

There are two Adams in this world, one brought condemnation and the other brought a gift.
The OT is “the book of the generations of Adam” and ends with the word “curse.” .
Genesis 5:1–2 KJV 1900
This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
Malachi 4:6 KJV 1900
And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, And the heart of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
The NT is “the book of the generation of Jesus Christ” and ends with “no more curse” .
Matthew 1:1 KJV 1900
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Revelation 22:3 KJV 1900
And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
The paradise of Genesis that Adam lost is restored in Revelation through the cross of Christ.
You have to choose which one you want to rule your life.
You cannot help being “in Adam” this came with birth.
You can help staying “in Adam”, a new birth that will put you in Christ.
This is why Jesus said
John 3:7 KJV 1900
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
Will you choose to reject the gift that only Christ can give and live as you were born or will you accept the gift of grace.
If you are saved today can I ask you if you are living as if that is true?
Are you going back to the sin that used to reign in your life and asking it to put the handcuffs back on you?
Are you living in a way that shows who your true master is?
Are you reigning in life?
Let’s OWN LIFE as we leave here.
We own life not because of our talents, or our thoughts of grandioseness, not because of our experience, but because of a gift of Grace from the one and only that could do this.
Jesus Christ.
If you think you are great it might be time to look at the truth and realize it isn’t you that is great, it is the one that gives the gift.
But more often than not I find that what haunts the Christian doesn’t tend to be his feeling of greatness but instead he deals with his feelings of inferiority.
Can I encourage you today to know that your weakness is where God loves to show his strength.
He loves flexing and showing his power through vessels that do things that are beyond their reach.
Our inferiority complexes seem to come from looking at the mirror instead of looking at an empty tomb.
It is impossible to feel inferior to anything or anyone when you realize that the one that death could not hold now lives in us and is represented in this world through us.
So no matter where you are in life right now the choice is yours.
Guilt or Grace?
Guilt or Grace as in place your trust in him today.
Also as Christians we have to choose whether we will live in the truth of the grace that we know or whether we will allow Satan to pressure us into living in guilt.
If you are living in guilt you are living as if you are paying again for that which Jesus paid?
