Intro:
The passage we are going to see today is a very important passage that helps us understand the history of mankind and the history of salvation.
Here we see original sin and where it started.
But even more importantly we will see righteousness that is imputed (given or placed upon) to us.
Many people want to read this passage and think it is all about sin but that is missing the main point of the passage.
Today we will go and knock on the door of Adam and try and get a grasp on how sin came into the world and then how Jesus is our last Adam.
Many people come to this passage and immediately think “original sin” (Adam’s sin).
But what we have to understand is that this its focus is not on sin, it focuses on righteousness and life.
Let’s turn to and look at our history.
I. Humanity’s Ruin -
By one man sin entered the world.
Talk about theology that will last through the ages, Paul used Abraham in and now he goes to Adam in
Thanks to Adam sin entered into the world.
Something to notice here is that Adam wasn’t the first one to sin.
Eve was the one that initially listened and obeyed the voice of the enemy.
It is interesting how God always expects the man of the house to lead the home in the direction it should go.
This is no doubt a privilege but it is also a responsibility and we see that here no doubt about it.
Look at what says.
Adam made a decision to follow her leadership instead of teaching her and leading her to follow that which God said.
Sin entered the world under one man.
Adam did not bring death into the world, he brought sin into the world and sin brought death.
But death is what went from Adam to humanity.
The key to it is that all of us and all of humanity sins.
Slide The Trespass
Then he says that sin was put on people’s account once the law came.
The question that naturally arises then is whether those between Adam and Moses were truly under sin or not?
The answer to that is something we have already seen in
He told the Gentiles that they didn’t have the law but they would be judged by what they knew was right and decided not to do.
In the same way those that were before the law of Moses may not have had the law that told them specifically what sin was they still knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that they were not even following what they knew was right.
They had new years resolutions as well.
By ONE every person that is a child of Adam has now been born into sin.
The good news is that this is only for those that are his sons and daughters.
Except that is all of us.
Doesn’t sound fair does it?
ONE man making all of us deal with the payment for sin.
Be careful coming to that conclusion though as you read on because another thing that isn’t fair is the other ONE that this passage will tell us about.
Some time life being unfair really stinks but you are about to see that we don’t get what we deserve which is also unfair.
speaks of the type of Christ that we find in Genesis at creation.
Death reigned from Adam to Moses still even for those that didn’t sin exactly like Adam did.
But death is a result of sin so it continued to reign.
Then he wraps up the verse saying that he (Adam) was the figure (type) of him that was to come.
Then he wraps up the verse saying that he (Adam) was the figure (type) of him that was to come.
Adam came from the earth but the last Adam (Christ) came from heaven.
The first Adam was king of the old creation, while the last Adam is King over the new creation.
The first Adam was tested in a perfect garden and disobeyed God while the last Adam was tested in a terrible wilderness and obeyed God in the garden of Gethsemane.
The disobedience of the first Adam brought sin, condemnation, and death upon the human race, but the obedience of the last Adam brought righteousness, salvation, and life to all who will believe.
Through the first Adam, death and sin reign in this world but through the Last Adam grace reigns and because of that believers can reign in life.
II.
Humanity’s Rescue -
He starts in saying not only the offence but also the free gift works this way.
The offence of one and many are dead.
MUCH MORE the grace of God.
What amazing words found here in this verse.
Yes there is bad news, Adam brought death but now there is THE REST OF THE STORY!
Just like one man brought the trespass, one man also brought the gift of Grace when we respond in faith.
Slide The Gift
MUCH MORE the grace of God and the GIFT by GRACE.
Much more the gift of grace.
Oh and by the way that is also through one man, Jesus Christ.
And that has also abounded to many.
Adam not only introduced sin to the world but it allowed death to literally rule the world.
show us that the way sin came into the world and the way that justification (salvation) come are different.
He says 1 sinned and that was the cause and judgment was brought by one to condemnation.
The gift
BUT the free gift is all about a lot of sin but that brings us to justification.
Because of one mans’s sin death reigned (was king).
Adam not only introduced sin to the world but this allowed death to literally rule the world.
Nothing can break free from its grip.
MUCH MORE again those that receive abundance of grace and the GIFT of RIGHTEOUSNESS will REIGN in LIFE by one as well.
Jesus Christ.
One man brought the condemnation of sin and then the other brought a GIFT.
Pay attention to what he says though.
Because of this gift of righteousness we shall reign in life.
I hope you get that and what it implies and what it means.
tells us the same thing.
Some of our lives and our Facebook looks like life is just too much and that we cannot EVEN......
He gave us this gift, ABUNDANCE of grace and the gift of Righteousness and we will reign in life, not because of how powerful we are or what we know.
We will reign in life because of one.
Jesus Christ.
No matter what we go through we reign in life knowing that we know the King of Kings.
We all know people that think that they have made it in life.
We hear them talk about what it takes to be successful like them.
We all think IF we were to have the money of those on Shark Tank that we would make great investors just the same.
We sincerely believe that if we were given a leg up in life that we would be great as well.
Not just financially but in every aspect of life.
Welcome to the LEG UP club this morning.
You have been given a leg up that assures you reigning in life.
Not a life without problems but a life where you know that you will succeed in life or death because we have been declared righteous.
So can I encourage you to leave today knowing what you have been promised and asking you to live as if it was true?
It is time that having the salvation that Jesus alone gives us makes us walk in a way where we know that we reign in life not only in death.
OWN LIFE
makes the comparison one more time between Adam and Christ.
By one mans sin judgment came to all and then are condemned.
But in the same way the righteousness of one, the FREE gift came upon all men for justification.
The gift to all men.
Gifts are only received if we accept and open them.
So all who receive this gift have justification.
How do we receive?
We believe!
Because of that many will be made righteous.
