What is Worship

The Bible never defines worship, so what is it?
The Bible NEVER defines worship, so what is it?
Worship is the quintessential purpose of life
“Question: What is the chief end of man? Answer: Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever.” Westminster Catechism
What does it mean to Glorify God?
Question: What is the chief end of man? Answer: Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever.
(1) Appreciation: To appreciate God is to set God highest in our thoughts. It means to abound in thanksgiving toward Him for what He has done for us through Jesus Christ.
Appreciation---Appreaciating who God is and what he has done for
(2) Adoration: To adore God is to ascribe to Him all honor and praise. It is to acknowledge that He alone is worthy of all our reverence and worship.
(3) Affection: To love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Our entire person is given to love the One who is altogether lovely.
(4) Subjection: To dedicate ourselves completely in obedience to God. We submit to His will and are ready to serve Him. How do you show someone you really love them? By obeying them and listening to them! Subjection is how a believer enters the kingdom, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” () Subjection is how we live in the kingdom!
In Summary, faith in the person of Christ makes worship possible when it is done through love. The outcome of our faith is a love for Christ when it is accompanied with an emptying of ourselves. Worship then, involves the totality of man’s existence as it is directed toward God as the supreme authority over His creation and the Savior of the Redeemed. The spiritual disciplines are means of growing in godliness that find their place in a life completely consecrated to worship God.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
2. The Bible gives us 2 reasons to worship God: He is our Creator and Redeemer
Revelation 4:10–11 ESV
the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
Revelation 4:10-11

10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11  “Worthy are you, our Lord and God,

to receive glory and honor and power,

for you created all things,

and by your will they existed and were created.”

God is our creator! He created and sustained all things. Because of this, He deserves our full worship and praise.
Revelation 5:9–14 ESV
And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

9 And they sang a new song, saying,

“Worthy are you to take the scroll

and to open its seals,

for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God

from every tribe and language and people and nation,

10  and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,

and they shall reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice,

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,

to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might

and honor and glory and blessing!”

13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb

be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

14 And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

God is our Redeemer. He came to live the perfect life we couldn’t live and die the perfect death we couldn’t die because we were His joy! He deserves our undying praise and gratefulness.
3. How do we Worship?
Homage-Hebrew verb translated worship means to bend over at the waist
Exodus 34:8
Exodus 34:8 ESV
And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.
This is at the second giving of the law. In the Old Testament, this gesture expressed surrender or submission to God. It expressed recognition of God’s majesty and holiness and a desire to acknowledge Him as king. Contrasted with this term for worship is the frequently used term “you are a stiff necked people” referring to those who would not bow in worship to God.
b. Service-- Another Hebrew term often translated “to worship” literally means “to serve”. The language of service implies that God is a great king, who requires faithfulness and obedience from those who belong to Him. This implies devotion to God as a pattern of life.

Romans 12:1 ESV

c. Reverence-- A final group of terms was used to indicate the fear, reverence or respect due to God. This involved keeping God’s commandments, walking in His ways, turning away from evil, and serving Him.
Psalm 95:6 ESV
Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
In the Old Testament, worship is focused at the sanctuary appointed by God. It follows the rituals laid down by God and is facilitated by the priesthood He has ordained. At the same time, such worship is only pleasing to God when accompanied by sincere obedience to God from the heart.
In the New Testament, the same terminology of worship is used in a transformed way to portray the work of Christ and the response that pleases God. Jesus, our great High Priest, fulfills the types and shadows of the old covenant and replaces the way in which we approach God. Jesus’ incarnation, death, resurrection and ascension make it possible for us to engage with God.
Acceptable worship means approaching or engaging with God on the terms that He proposes and in the manner that He makes possible. True worship is revealed by God, and it is made possible by His redeeming work.
Psalm 24:3–4 ESV
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.
Before we can have proper worship, we must come before God with a clean heart and clean hands:

What does Worship look like practically?

There are 2 means for acceptable worship
Forgetting your own desires and focusing on God
We all have sinful desires that are trying to take our view off of God and put it onto ourselves, we need to combat that and focus on God!
Day by day fighting temptation and forsaking other things that can take our view away from God
Hebrews 12:1–2 ESV
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
c. Sacrificing your time, energy, and resources to follow His commands and further His kingdom
2. Confessing Sin daily so you can have a right relationship with Him
Psalm 24:3–4 ESV
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.
Psalm 66:18 ESV
If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
a. We cannot have fellowship with God if we are harboring bitterness, reoccuring sin, selfish actions, false gods, or anything contrary to him in our hearts.
3. Presenting yourself to him everyday
Romans 12:1 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
a. Every action must be for glorifying God or finding glory in God. If we aren’t doing one of those things, we are not properly worshiping.
What needs to change in your life for you to be worshiping God? Do you need to get some activities out of your life? Friends? Relationships? Sin? Are you trying to bring glory to God and find glory in Him or are you doing those things for yourself. Worship is everything we do, say, or think. We can worship God because of what He has done for us and what He has revealed to us. Are you worshiping Him?
