Compassion Compels us to Respond

Introduction: Psalm

Text: ;

Action without Compassion is Self Serving

Text: ; 10:1-4
Today our main text will be found in …this text is often viewed from verse 37 when Jesus says that the “Workers are Few” - we will address that but I believe that the main purpose that inspires those remarks is found in verse 36 when it says that Jesus “had compassion on them.” This is what motivated Christ to then make such a statement.
TEXT - - 35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Köster comments about the verb to have compassion by saying that , “outside the original parables of Jesus there is no instance of the word being used of men. It is always used to describe the attitude of Jesus and it characterizes the divine nature of His acts.”

The New International Greek Testament Commentary: The Gospel of Matthew A. ‘Ask the Lord of the Harvest to Send out Workers’ (9:35–38)

Compassion involves so identifying with the situation of others that one is prepared to act for their benefit.

What does Compassion mean?- to be deeply moved (bowels) v. — to be affected deeply in one’s inner being, especially in that aspect (the bowels) characterized by sympathy and compassion.
John Nolland says, “Compassion involves the identifying with the situation of others that one is prepared to act for their benefit.”

On at least six occasions we are told that Jesus healed because he had compassion on those who were afflicted. This was true of vast multitudes (, ; ); two blind men (); a leper (); the demon-possessed gadarenes (); the widow of Nain whose son Jesus raised from the dead ().

F F. Bosworth said: Modern theology glorifies the power of God more than magnifying his compassion... But the Bible reverses this, and instead, magnifies His great willingness to use His power more of than simply be glorified by power itself. No where in the Bible states that "God is Power", but it does say that, "God is love." It’s not faith in the power of God that guarantees His blessings, but faith in His love and in His willingness to do so.
modern theology glorifies the power of God more magnifying his compassion... But the Bible reverses this, and great willingness to use its power more of what glorifies power itself. Anywhere in the Bible that "God is able", but if he says, "God is love." It is not faith in the power of God to which ensures its blessings, but the faith in his love and his will.
Bosworth is accurate in saying: "it is not what God can do, but what he longs to do, that inspires the faith."
The commentary of Bosworth is very clear in saying: "it is not what God can do, but what he longs to do, that inspires the faith."

Then look at what happens next…the Compassion of Jesus does something about it!

The New International Version. (2011). (). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.
- 10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

power ⇔ authority n. — power, often implying the accompanying authority that comes with such power.
Notice how He responds to his own Prayer! The Lord of the Harvest is Jesus Christ… He spoke it, now He is making it happen.
- “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”

Paul’s Labor for the Church

24 Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. 25 I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness—26 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.

Then Matthew takes the time to name each Disciple…Why? Because regardless of who they were, or how their past defined them, or even in spite of how some betrayed him, Christ still believed in them! And Christ believes in you!
- “And I tell you that you are Peter, e and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”

Jesus then goes on to provide instructions on what to do...

Jesus then goes on to provide instructions on what to do...
“Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.”
- 15 Moses said to the Lord, 16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

It’s not that Jesus was avoiding the Gentiles or Samaritans, but rather, His compassion never forgets even the prayers of Moses hundreds of years before His coming… His Compassion for each of us never forgets the prayers we lay before Him… “I will never leave you nor forsake you” says the Lord.
power ⇔ authority n. — power, often implying the accompanying authority that comes with such power.

In instructing the disciples on what to expect, Jesus is instilling His compassion for the lost upon them.
In going, the Disciples are accepting the mission of Christ…though they may not be fully aware personally on their personal cost.
In sending out the disciples, Christ is placing His hope in the Workers that He has prepared

It is the Compassion of Christ that allows us to overcome anything life throws at us...

Peace and Hope
Paul describes the purpose of suffering in this way...
In Paul’s Labor for the Church
5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

The New International Version. (2011). (). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.
Paul’s Labor for the Church
6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Suffering in this context is related not to challenges of life, but to challenges in maintaining faith in Christ.
- “All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be save”
13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

To Admonish
To Teach
To Present
Expressing Compassion for others is not a natural response
Compassion for humanity belong to Jesus Christ…we are driven by the Love of Christ and welcome the participation to do His will.

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.

Paul then describe how he sees himself amongst those in his care...

- “Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have may fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent you Timothy my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.
my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.
Paul willingly takes upon the compassion of Christ… which then is passed down to Timothy.
Are we seeing people around us with the same compassion that Christ saw the crowds? How are we responding to the compassion in our eyes?

It was through the Compassion of Christ that...

God sent His Son.. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. ().
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Jesus sent His Disciples… 16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. ().
Jesus sends each of us… “14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”  ().

37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
