Who Was Mary Magdalene?
Most likely single due to being referred to in association with a place rather than a person.
Not Married to Jesus as some have said due to the same reason as above.
Wouldn’t she be introduced as Mary the wife Jesus.
I think is she was His wife an introduction referencing Him rather than where she was from would be the way she was introduced.
Possibly a widow
This comes from the idea that the women provided for Jesus and the other disciples out of their means.
They had means and had control over how they were distributed as would not as easily be the case
Tied to reputation as a prostitute in 1591 when Pope Gregory the Great regarded her and the unnamed sinner of chapter 7 as the same person.
Thoughts against this:
It is assumed that the unnamed sinner was a prostitute and however likely, cannot be stated with 100% certainty.
Pope Gregory may have been motivated by strengthening the perception of forgiveness… was that really needed?
Who Was Mary Magdalene?
Pope Gregory is also accused of trying to discredit the role of women in ministry.
If he could smear the name of one of the closes woman followers of Jesus then the women of his era would have one less example to support their rising role in Christian ministry.
Disregarding this view elevates the perception of her, particularly as a model for men and women to follow as an example of devotion to Jesus.
Background information:
Jesus Rescued Mary from a Troubled Past.
Mary was previously demon possessed
Jesus Christ understood exorcism as part of his ministry
NIV84He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’
