Why Pray?

matt
Matthew 6:5–14 ESV
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,
This is where our Lord Jesus begins to teach us to pray, so let’s examine.
We are given some guidelines here, praise, giving in to Yahweh’s will, provision, forgiveness, deliverance from evil, protection, and a stern warning.
What does prayer really mean?

Remember that most important thing here is the attitude of our heart.

Isaiah 1:15–18 ESV
When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause. “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
Prayer—is converse with God; the intercourse of the soul with God, not in contemplation or meditation, but in direct address to him. Prayer may be oral or mental, occasional or constant, ejaculatory or formal. It is a “beseeching the Lord” (); “pouring out the soul before the Lord” (); “praying and crying to heaven” (); “seeking unto God and making supplication” (); “drawing near to God” (); “bowing the knees” ().
Prayer presupposes a belief in the personality of God, his ability and willingness to hold intercourse with us, his personal control of all things and of all his creatures and all their actions.
Acceptable prayer must be sincere (), offered with reverence and godly fear, with a humble sense of our own insignificance as creatures and of our own unworthiness as sinners, with earnest importunity, and with unhesitating submission to the divine will. Prayer must also be offered in the faith that God is, and is the hearer and answerer of prayer, and that he will fulfil his word, “Ask, and ye shall receive” (, ; ; ; , ), and in the name of Christ (16:23, 24; 15:16; ; ; ; ).
Isaiah 29:13 ESV
And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
Prayer is of different kinds, secret (); social, as family prayers, and in social worship; and public, in the service of the sanctuary.
Here are some examples on how to pray.
Moses implored-begged, pour travail in prayer, cried, pleading mercy.
Exodus 32:11 ESV
But Moses implored the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?
1 Samuel 1:15 ESV
But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord.

2 Chronicles 32:20 ESV
Then Hezekiah the king and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed because of this and cried to heaven.
When we agree with God, we are able to pray His Word.

Understanding what His Word says, enables us to align ourselves with His will.
Job 8:5 ESV
If you will seek God and plead with the Almighty for mercy,

Psalm 73:28 ESV
But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.
We must practice the discipline of humbling ourselves before The Lord in prayer.
Bowing the knees, raised hands unto God, crying out, praying in the Spirit (tongues) not a Pentecostal thing but a born again thing.

Checking the motives of our heart, and praying according to the will of God.

Ephesians 3:14 ESV
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,
Hebrews 4:14–16 ESV
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
According to our Heavenly Father we have boldness to come to Him in prayer by the blood of Christ.
The blood of Christ gives us access to the throne of grace.

Are we using this great blessing to enter in to the throne of grace.

Ephesians 2:18 ESV
For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
Why don’t we Pray.
Will it work for me.
Can I do it.
What’s it worth to me.
What will it cost me?
I believe this is the one area besides faith that blocks us the most, you see it will cost you!
Time, sleep, energy, and above all faith, to believe that is able and willing to answer your prayers!
We don’t think we have time.

PRAYER Communion with God, usually comprising petition, adoration, praise, confession, and thanksgiving. The ultimate object of prayer in both OT and NT is not merely the good of the petitioner but the honor of God’s name.

We don’t think it is important.

Prayer. The addressing and petitioning of God. Prayer to a god or gods is a feature of many, if not all, religions, but here attention will be restricted to the biblical teaching and some of its implications. A classic definition of Christian prayer is “an offering up of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to his will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgement of his mercies” (Westminster Shorter Catechism). Christian prayer is the end product of a long process of change and development in God’s relation to men, as a survey of the biblical data shows.

We don’t believe that it makes any difference.
Daniel 3:15–18 ESV
Now if you are ready when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good. But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?” Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
Our prayer life and faith must increase to such a degree that no matter what comes our way, our faith in God is ever increasing, even if we don’t see the answered prayer, or Yahweh chooses not to answer our prayer, because sometimes a no is the answer.

So let’s rise to this level of faith that we will need for these end of days battles, that have come are way or it’s coming.
The power of Prayer can only be accessed by prayer. So Pray!
Let’s build ourselves up in faith now, and begin to learn to pray now! While we have the time and freedom.
For remember today is the day of salvation!
