Definition of legalism - adherence to a system of legal law as a means of justification. Specific to Christendom, it was not only entrance into in covenant with God, but the maintaining of the law as a means of right standing. In essence they were taking the non-essential an treating it as essential. They were treating what was not their heritage and binding it as law.
