Benediction (Anthony)
Benediction (Anthony)
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
forever.

Greeting (Anthony)
Greeting (Anthony)
Friends, I thank you on behalf of Shawn and Ashley, for coming today to show your love and support as we remember their daughter, Dayze.
We come together in grief acknowledging our human loss. This is a tender time, a time when all of us, in one way or another, are confronted with feelings of loss and uncertainty. There will be disbelief and sadness in the hearts of many of us who are in this room. Perhaps it is hard to admit, even to ourselves, how profoundly vulnerable death can make us feel.
But, we celebrate Dayze’s life even as we tremble with vulnerability. For we know that whether we die quickly or slowly, we must all face the prospect of having to give up everything of this world before we will see God.
Our celebration of our love for Dayze, Shawn, Ashley, and the rest of the Marinelli family cannot blunt these feelings. But, we are not here to feel better. We are here to find strength and support in the sharing of this love. We are here to share all of our joy and sorrow as that love reveals itself even more deeply in this time of loss.
Memorial Prayer
Memorial Prayer
Let’s begin with prayer and then Jordan Ingle will share a poem selected by the family.
Lord, grant us peace to accept the things we cannot change, grant us the courage to change the things we can, and grant us the wisdom to know the difference.
May the Lord of Peace send peace to all who mourn, and comfort those who have suffered loss among us.
We pray to you for one another in our need, and for all, anywhere, who mourn with us this day. To those who doubt, give light; to those who are weak, give strength; to those who sorrow, give peace. Keep true in us the love which holds us together.
Lord, all you have given us is yours. At first you gave Dayze to us; so now we give Dayze back to you.
Lord of Mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for Dayze, whom you called your daughter on earth, that she has entered the kingdom of peace and light. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, forever and ever. Amen.

When tragic events happen in life, we are forced to ask some of life’s most difficult questions. Today, we mourn the death of a child and we’re consumed with questions about God’s justice, God’s morality, God’s goodness, God’s wisdom and knowledge, and God’s purposes.
There are many great questions to be asked, but I believe they all disappear into the shadows of one great reality.
Today, Dayze rests, safe in the arms of God the Father. Today, for Dayze, there is no threat of disease, disaster, or death. Today, there is no lack of love or fellowship. Today, there is no need of care. Today, there is no fear, no pain, no need of any kind, nor is there any want of any kind. She rests, safe in the arms of the Father.
And I believe that Jesus is the way that Dayze has come to Him.
For, Jesus said,
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (, ESV)

[BRIEF PAUSE]
You might ask, How is it that a child, who couldn’t even speak, could come to the Father through Jesus?
Well, we don’t need to go any further than Jesus to know the answer.
You may have thought that it takes a great deal of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in order to know the Father, or in order to believe in Jesus. But, that’s not really what Jesus taught.
Jesus had been all over the nation of Israel, healing and performing miracles and preaching that the Kingdom of God was present through him. And many people, entire cities denounced Jesus. Jesus said to them, ‘Woe to you,’ for he knew that these cities would not come to the Father, but would perish.
And after these proclamations of woe, Jesus prayed this prayer,
I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. (, ESV)
At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
(, ESV)
At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children;
I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. (, ESV)
You see, God reveals himself, not to the wise, not to the knowledgeable, but to those who are like children, even small children.

Jesus also taught this:
Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (, ESV)
matthew 11.25
Jesus is so backwards to us. To be humble means to be below other people, to be subject to them. And there’s no one lower, more humble than a baby, or a small child. And Jesus says that they will be greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
(, ESV)

and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Another time, Jesus was teaching some adult men and some people started bring children to Jesus, but the disciples tried to send the kids away so that Jesus wouldn’t be bothered. But, Jesus got frustrated with them and said,
Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.
Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people,
It seems backwards to us, but the younger you are, the more naturally humble you are, and the closer to Jesus you are.
And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”
but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”
We have this great hope, that a child who is not even old enough to perceive of her own arrogance, must certainly be in the Kingdom of Heaven, today, safe in the arms of the Father. Most certainly, Jesus has according to hid own words, delivered Dayze to His Father.
This truth is helpful to those of us who are older, those of us who have suffered loss. We can have hope that Dayze is at peace.
And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.
And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.
And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’ ” And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.”
And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.
But, let this truth also be a reminder to us, that when we are not humble, when we are not laid low like a baby, dependent on parents and truly on God for every little thing, when we are stronger and wiser, we begin building our own Kingdoms here on earth. And when we live for the pride of the self, we do not humble ourselves before Jesus.
Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’
But, Jesus said we must or we will not enter the Kingdom of God. He said, “Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”
I think the Author of Hebrew’s words are pertinent to close. He writes,
Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’
Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands—while you still live—let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. (, ESV)

And now may the God of Peace, who brought from the dead our Lord Jesus, equip you with everything good, that you may do his will. May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds focussed on the love of God through Jesus. Now may the Father grant you strength, through his Spirit to the depths of your inner being, that Christ may dwell in your hearts in faith, and that you may be rooted and grounded in love.
Dear Lord, look upon Dayze. We thank you that you have delivered her from the bonds of this world that she may rest in your arms. Reveal your truth to those who grieve, so that they may meet the days ahead with your peace. Grant us the grace to entrust Dayze to your never-failing love. Grant to her eternal rest, and let perpetual light shine in her that she will forever live in your light, as she lives in our hearts.
: May the Lord bless you and keep you, The Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up the light of His countenance upon you, and give you peace, now and ever more. Let there be peace for all. Let there be peace. Let there be peace. Amen.
Let there be peace. Amen.
