Subject: Evangelism
ETS- Witnessing would characterize the apostle’s ministry because of the Holy Spirit.
ESS- The Holy Spirit should cause us to be witnesses wherever we are.
OSS- Are you a Holy Spirit empowered witness?
FCF-Because we do not like conflict and prefer comfort we do not rely on the Holy Spirit to be witnesses for Jesus.
Have you ever witnessed something amazing?
Tell the story about the time the 18-wheeler flipped, pulled the guy out. I was the witness I had to tell the cops what had happened.
Have you ever been a witness to something?
My kids are great Witnesses, sometimes they will be like he did this or he did that.
The disciples just witnessed the greatest even of all time. The resurrection. Can you picture this no one had ever risen from the dead before? Now they were supposed to be witnesses to this event.
Do your realize that if the resurrection had never occured then our whole faith is a lie.
Acts 1:6–11 NASB95
So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”
Because of God’s Call to be Witnesses:
1)We must keep the main thing the main thing (6-7).
Acts 1:6–7 NASB95
So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;

Explanation:
Can you picture growing up as the people of God and you heard all the time about the greatness of when your people ruled. You hear stories about David and all his conquests and how huge the kingdom was when Solomon ruled. And now you are being ruled over by the Romans. But ever since you have lived you only know what you have been told.
The Gentiles had taken the Jews’ kingdom from them dating from Nebuchadnezzar’s conquest in 586 B.C. Clearly the messianic kingdom is in view here.[1]
How do we get focused on the minors?
In the disciples’ minds the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the coming of the promised kingdom were closely associated. And well they should be, because the Old Testament frequently joined the two (cf. ; ; ; ; ). When Christ told the disciples of the soon-coming Spirit baptism, they immediately concluded that the restoration of Israel’s kingdom was near in time (cf. comments on “restore” in ).[2]
How do we get focused on the minors?
a. We focus on secondary issues (6).
Acts 1:6 NASB95
So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
Notice the disciples were focusing on something important: The Kingdom of God.
Notice the disciples were focusing on something important
Isaiah 32:15–20 NASB95
Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high, And the wilderness becomes a fertile field, And the fertile field is considered as a forest. Then justice will dwell in the wilderness And righteousness will abide in the fertile field. And the work of righteousness will be peace, And the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever. Then my people will live in a peaceful habitation, And in secure dwellings and in undisturbed resting places; And it will hail when the forest comes down, And the city will be utterly laid low. How blessed will you be, you who sow beside all waters, Who let out freely the ox and the donkey.
History Lesson
In the disciples’ minds the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the coming of the promised kingdom were closely associated. And well they should be, because the Old Testament frequently joined the two (cf. ; ; ; ; ). When Christ told the disciples of the soon-coming Spirit baptism, they immediately concluded that the restoration of Israel’s kingdom was near in time (cf. comments on “restore” in ).[3]
Why did they want to know this, because they did not want to suffer like Jesus? Okay Jesus we thought you were coming to blow up the Romans, remember all the way to 586 (check this date) BC the Jews had a great nation. But because they did not seek God, God handed them over to the Babylonians and the Assyrians and others after that until now the Romans were ruling over them. Jesus, you did that whole suffering thing and now it is time to bring back our rule. Really Jesus this is all about me.
God’s kingdom is important and it will happen but God’s kingdom was not supposed to keep them from being witnesses. They thought God’s blessing was just for them, you see they have the Christian cold, Bless me bless me.
But God’s blessing is always so we can be a blessing to others.
Why are Churches not growing in quality and quantity? Could it be that we are focused on the majors? I remember one time I was at a church and I was thinking about cutting the donuts out of the budget. Man, you would have thought I was embezzling money.
I have seen churches more focused on the style of worship than they were on worshipping God. I have seen Churches focus on the color of the carpet as a major. And as a church we can even do many good things but are we doing the greatest thing by making disciples and being a witness for the Lord Jesus. Christ.
But what we see is that they wanted the reward of the kingdom without having to be kingdom people. God says this is not for you to know, you focus on what you are called to be focused on.
You have a difficult circumstance right now: Trust me
There is something I am calling you to do right now but you are scared: trust me.
BE MY WITNESS

John Wesley and George Whitefield
John Wesley and George Whitefield they ruined a friendship because of minor things at the end of their life this is what they said.
John Wesley is where the methodist Church founder.

He would preach in pulpits until they were closed to him, and he would then preach in the open fields. He would preach three times a day, beginning at five AM since workers could stop to hear him as they walked to their daily drudgery.

He sometimes covered sixty miles a day on horseback. Weather conditions made no difference; he made his schedule and kept it regardless. He would flee an angry mob by jumping into a cold pond, swim out and go on to preach again. He had the ability to turn hostile people his way.

He went to South Wales in 1741, the north of England in 1742, Ireland in 1747, and Scotland in 1751. In all he went to Ireland forty-two times and to Scotland twenty-two times. He returned to cities again and again. Sometimes he would return years after his last visit and record that the little society he helped form was still intact and still faithful. He would examine every member of every society personally to search for faith and spiritual growth. The societies thus formed provided the local organization for his movement.

What did Wesley preach? Thrift, cleanliness, honesty, salvation, good family relations, dozens of other themes, but above all, faith in Christ.

Don’t focus on things you cannot control.
Don’t focus on things you cannot control.
Don’t focus on things you cannot control.
How do we get focused on the minors?
b. We don’t embrace our role (7).
Acts 1:7 NASB95
He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;
It is almost like these guys are going back to the garden. What was the problem in the garden it was not enough to be made in the image of God they wanted to be God. Don’t we have a hard time letting God be God.
There are all kinds of roles in life.
Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the Church. Men we are sinful and that is tough sometimes.
Wives respect your husband. Wives your sitting there and there are some days where you are like man he is not worth my respect. Doesn't matter that is your role.
Children obey your parents. You are probably saying, but my parents are crazy.
In order for the family to function well is determined by how well everyone embraces there roles.
God the father roles include:
a. He is the first person in the Trinity.
The Father is presented as electing, loving, and bestowing. The Son is presented as suffering, reddeeming, and upholding the universe. The Holy Spirit is presented as regenerating, indwelling, baptizing, energizing, and sanctifying.
Even everyone in the trinity has a role and the Father, Son and Holy Spirit all play it perfectly.
b. Father over all creation.
c. Father by Intimate relationship.
Exodus 4:22 NASB95
“Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Israel is My son, My firstborn.
d. The father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1:3 NASB95
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
e. The father of all who believe in Christ
John 1:12 NASB95
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
And in this passage he is in charge of restoring the kingdom to Israel. My children not only am I in charge of it but you have way to small of a vision for the restoration.

This restoration is something way bigger than one nation this is a worldwide nation.
Genesis 12:2–3 NASB95
And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
Revelation 7:9 NASB95
After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands;

Bruce (Jim Carrey) get’s passed over for a coveted job that he thinks he should get. He complains that God is treating him unfair and then God (Morgan Freeman) gives him all of his powers because he thinks he can do a better job. Bruce then uses all his talents just for himself and everything thing just goes bad. I think we are like Bruce a lot we think if we could just run the show we would be alright. We need to let God be God.
There are a lot of questions I have for God that i will not know the answer to until glory.
Why in the world was I blessed to grow up in America in a family that loves me while so many others suffer so much?
John Wesley and George Whitefield they ruined a friendship because of minor things at the end of their life this is what they said.
Why is there evil like war, slavery, the holocaust and so many other unspeakable things?
We could go on, but Jesus tells these disciples your job is not to restore the kingdom, your job is to be kingdom people by being witnesses.
What if we said what David Brainerd said:
“Here am I, send me; send me to the ends of the earth; send me to the rough, the savage lost of the wilderness; send me from all that is called comfort on earth; send me even to death itself, if it be but in your service, and to promote your kingdom” –- David Brainerd
A man came up to a preacher one time and he said, “What about the people who have never heard? The preacher said I am more worried about those who have heard and have not shared.
Application:
Are you focused on secondary issues.
Are you trying to be like Bruce almighty and living a selfish christian life.
Today God is saying focus on the majors.
Enjoy me, glorify me.
Church the vision hear is to make gospel centered disciples and plant 100 in 25 years. We are still a young church but the older we get we need to stay connected to the vision.
Because of God’s Call to be Witnesses:
2)We must play our role to reach the world with His Love (8).
Explanation:
The book of Acts follows these verses in ch 1-7 they are witnesses in Jerusalem
in 8-12-they are witnesses in Judea and Samaria
and 13-28 they are witnesses to the ends of the earth.
This could be a command or a promise as well. “you will be” promise, but it is an imperative. You must do this.
Look at the Apostles this was their new passion:
Acts 4:20 NASB95
for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
They became unstoppable:
Witnessing to the Jews meant witnessing to those who held a true religion, but held it for the most part falsely and unreally [sic].
Witnessing in Samaria meant witnessing to those who had a mixed religion, partly true, and partly false, Jewish and Heathen.
Witnessing to the uttermost part of the earth meant witnessing to those who had no real and vital religion at all.”[5]
The gospel that was based on a man dying would go on and reach the entire known world.
The gospel saturated the world because these men through the power of the Holy Spirit witnessed.
Witnesses
D.A Carson says this, “Their calling was to be witnesses not stargazers”.[6]
Where did this word witness even come from?
MARTYR — a witness. Because the early Christians frequently suffered for their faith, the word “martyr” soon came to refer to people who suffered or died because of their witness to Christ. Thus the apostle Paul calls Stephen a martyr (), and the Book of Revelation mentions “the martyrs of Jesus” (17:6).[7]
Are you a powerful witness or an insignificant stargazer?
D.A Carson says in our churches we act more like stargazers than we do witnesses.
The stargazers are a family Uranoscopidae of perciform fish that have eyes on top of their heads (hence the name). The family includes about 51 species (one extinct) in 8 genera, all marine and found worldwide in shallow waters.
Why can we be powerful witnesses?

The Holy Spirit gives us Power.

Power-
One word that I don’t think I would use to describe ourselves is powerful. But that is what we are when we receive the Lord Jesus Christ.
With all of our resources and buildings and money do we focus it on being empowered by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses to the ends of the earth. Or do we spend it on conveniences.
Illustration
Their enemies were always giving the early Christians serious problems. They crucified them; they hung them; they speared them; they burned them; they fed them to lions. Sometimes they even stole their property and sold their children into slavery. They ridiculed these “religious weirdoes.” These frustrated adversaries were not indifferent to people who had been given the ridiculous title (at the time) “Christians.” In fact, they once shouted, with tears of rage in their eyes, “The people that have turned the world upside down have come here also” (). The implication was, “What have we done to deserve this?”
Isn’t that interesting? The enemies of Jesus might have thought His followers demented, demonic, or dangerous; but they never thought them insignificant.
What about today? What about your campus, your town, your church, your…..Self? Are the Christians where you live “turning the world upside down?” Are they even nudging it a little bit? Does anybody even take them seriously enough to notice?
A few years ago, the Archbishop of Canterbury said, “Wherever the Apostle Paul went in his day, he touched off a revival or a riot. Wherever I go today, they serve tea!” That about sums it up.
I live in Atlanta, Georgia. This has been touted as the most Christian part of America. The Gallup Poll discovered that, though it has only 17% of the US population, the South as 43% of the people who call themselves “born-again Christians.” So you might thing the campuses and cities of the South would be veritably aflame for God.
Dynamite is used as an explosive charge. The most common purposes for using explosives include clearing stumps, demolishing buildings and certain types of mining. Many rock quarries use dynamite to harvest rock.
See the Holy Spirit was sent to the disciples after Jesus had ascended to the Father. So they had not received it yet, and they were waiting for it.
Once they got it they completely changed. Do you remember Peter, he was the guy who denied Jesus three times. He went from that angle to preaching a sermon. Here was his sermon you killed the son of God, now you need to believe in him or else you will perish.
D.A Carson says this, “Their calling was to be witnesses not stargazers”.[6]

Thus the apostle Paul calls Stephen a martyr (), and the Book of Revelation mentions “the martyrs of Jesus” (17:6).[7]
Why can we be powerful witnesses?
Because God has given us the Holy Spirit
The key to the apostles’ successful fulfillment of Jesus’ commission was their baptism with and consequent indwelling by the Holy Spirit. Without this divine enablement they would only have been able to follow Jesus’ example, but with it Jesus could literally continue to do His work and teach His words through them. Consequently their preparation for the baptism of the Spirit was very important. Luke recorded it to highlight its foundational significance.[8]
Application:
They were now to be witnesses, and their definite work was to bear testimony to their Master; they were not to be theologians, or philosophers, or leaders, but witnesses.[9]
Great things that I have witnessed:
A sushi cook at Tokyo bowl
The rockets in the 90-dream shake
First time I saw Heather
What did I do when I witnessed something great I thought about it talked about it and wanted it more. Should this not be the same thing that happens with Jesus
Application:
The name of Jesus, however, represents his presence and his power, and the presence of Jesus is experienced in the church through the Spirit. The Spirit is the abiding presence of Jesus; the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus (cf. “Holy Spirit” and “Spirit of Jesus” in 16:6–7).

Perhaps that is the missionary message of Acts. The story remains open. There must always be new beginnings. The “ends of the earth” are still out there to receive the witness to Christ.

Because of God’s Call to be Witnesses:
3)We must remember our hope.
Acts 1:9–11 NASB95
And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

This book starts with the kingdom and it ends with the kingdom. This kingdom you want it is coming and it is going to be greater than anything than you can ever imagine. I am going to take care of you. But for now will you walk by faith and trust me. Because we will get to be a part of the kingdom.
Share about how I have struggled raising money and trying to get to Houston and a conversation I had with Trevor. He said are you going to walk by faith.

I am going to bring it together and let me just show you by the way I am going to ascend to heaven.
Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
The cloud seems clearly to be a reference to the shekinah, the visible symbol of the glorious presence of God (cf. ; ; ; ). Thus what the disciples saw was the symbol of God’s presence receiving and enveloping Jesus into heaven. This connoted God’s approval of Jesus and Jesus’ entrance into the glory of God.
“It was necessary that as Jesus in a moment of time had arrived in the world in a moment of time He should leave it.”[11]
What is the significance of the ascension.
John Maile summarized the significance of the ascension narratives in Luke-Acts as follows. First, he stated, “The ascension is the confirmation of the exaltation of Christ and his present Lordship.” Second, it is “the explanation of the continuity between the ministry of Jews and that of the church.” Third, it is “the culmination of the resurrection appearances.” Fourth, it is “the prelude to the sending of the Spirit.” Fifth, it is “the foundation of Christian mission.” Sixth, it is “the pledge of the return of Christ.”[12]
How does Christ’s ascension give testimony to our hope?
§ Christ was exalted and is currently sitting as Lord at the right hand of the Father
§ The Kingdom of God grew through the Jews and now through the Church.
§ Jesus appeared multiple times over forty days
§ Proven by the sending of the Spirit (share how the Holy Spirit convicted me to lead me to Christ)
§ We get to experience through beng involved in God’s mission.
§ Christ will return
“In Luke’s mind the Ascension of Christ has two aspects: in the Gospel it is the end of the story of Jesus, in Acts it is the beginning of the story of the Church, which will go on until Christ comes again. Thus for Luke, as Barrett says, ‘the end of the story of Jesus is the Church, and the story of Jesus is the beginning of the Church’.”[13]
