Text:
Subject: Evangelism
ETS- Witnessing would characterize the apostle’s ministry because of the Holy Spirit.
ESS- The Holy Spirit should cause us to be witnesses wherever we are.
OSS- Are you a Holy Spirit empowered witness?
FCF-Because we do not like conflict and prefer comfort we do not rely on the Holy Spirit to be witnesses for Jesus.
Have you ever witnessed something amazing?
Tell the story about the time the 18-wheeler flipped, pulled the guy out.
I was the witness I had to tell the cops what had happened.
Have you ever been a witness to something?
My kids are great Witnesses, sometimes they will be like he did this or he did that.
The disciples just witnessed the greatest even of all time.
The resurrection.
Can you picture this no one had ever risen from the dead before?
Now they were supposed to be witnesses to this event.
Do your realize that if the resurrection had never occured then our whole faith is a lie.
Because of God’s Call to be Witnesses:
1)We must keep the main thing the main thing (6-7).
Explanation:
Explanation:
Can you picture growing up as the people of God and you heard all the time about the greatness of when your people ruled.
You hear stories about David and all his conquests and how huge the kingdom was when Solomon ruled.
And now you are being ruled over by the Romans.
But ever since you have lived you only know what you have been told.
The Gentiles had taken the Jews’ kingdom from them dating from Nebuchadnezzar’s conquest in 586 B.C. Clearly the messianic kingdom is in view here.[1]
How do we get focused on the minors?
In the disciples’ minds the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the coming of the promised kingdom were closely associated.
And well they should be, because the Old Testament frequently joined the two (cf.
; ; ; ; ).
When Christ told the disciples of the soon-coming Spirit baptism, they immediately concluded that the restoration of Israel’s kingdom was near in time (cf.
comments on “restore” in ).[2]
How do we get focused on the minors?
a.
We focus on secondary issues (6).
Notice the disciples were focusing on something important: The Kingdom of God.

Why did they want to know this, because they did not want to suffer like Jesus?
Okay Jesus we thought you were coming to blow up the Romans, remember all the way to 586 (check this date) BC the Jews had a great nation.
But because they did not seek God, God handed them over to the Babylonians and the Assyrians and others after that until now the Romans were ruling over them.
Jesus, you did that whole suffering thing and now it is time to bring back our rule.
Really Jesus this is all about me.
God’s kingdom is important and it will happen but God’s kingdom was not supposed to keep them from being witnesses.
They thought God’s blessing was just for them, you see they have the Christian cold, Bless me bless me.
But God’s blessing is always so we can be a blessing to others.
Why are Churches not growing in quality and quantity?
Could it be that we are focused on the majors?
I remember one time I was at a church and I was thinking about cutting the donuts out of the budget.
Man, you would have thought I was embezzling money.
I have seen churches more focused on the style of worship than they were on worshipping God.
I have seen Churches focus on the color of the carpet as a major.
And as a church we can even do many good things but are we doing the greatest thing by making disciples and being a witness for the Lord Jesus.
Christ.
But what we see is that they wanted the reward of the kingdom without having to be kingdom people.
God says this is not for you to know, you focus on what you are called to be focused on.
You have a difficult circumstance right now: Trust me
There is something I am calling you to do right now but you are scared: trust me.
BE MY WITNESS

He returned to cities again and again.
Sometimes he would return years after his last visit and record that the little society he helped form was still intact and still faithful.
He would examine every member of every society personally to search for faith and spiritual growth.
The societies thus formed provided the local organization for his movement.
