Chapter 12
In chapter 12 we looked at the the triumphal entry of the Lord Jesus into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. Crowds were singing “hosanna: blessed is the King of Israel”. But as it became clear that Jesus was not about to deliver them from their present circumstance they turned in an instant and became hostile toward him.
This he said, signifying what death he should die. The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
Chapter 13
In chapter 13 John tells us that the hour had come for Jesus to be crucified and to depart out of the world. This is a climactic portion of Scripture. The world has heard, the religious crowd has heard and the disciples have heard - Jesus is going to die.
There is other instruction that follows what we read in John 13 but I don’t believe any to be more significant than what Christ is teaching in this setting.

I. The Demonstration of Foot Washing
I. The Demonstration of Foot Washing
No where in all the Bible is there a more striking illustration of humility than in John chapter 13.
Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him; Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
The best way to teach anything is to show. More is caught than is taught. Jesus is our supreme example!

Notice the Bible says here “Jesus knew…Jesus knowing”
Notice also the Bible says “he was come from God”
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
B. The Particulars of the demonstration
B. The Particulars of the demonstration
He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
i. His garments
“…and laid aside his garments”
His were Kingly garments, Royal garments and he laid them aside
ii. His girding
“…and took a towel and girded himself”
girding was symbolic of serving
it was in preparation to serve
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
iii. His gesture
After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

II. The Explanation of Foot Washing
II. The Explanation of Foot Washing
Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
The Initial Washing
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
The Continual Washing
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
B. The confusion in the explanation
B. The confusion in the explanation
Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
Now Peter want’s to tell Jesus what to do
Many struggle with their salvation because they have dirty feet!

III. The Exhortation for Foot Washing
III. The Exhortation for Foot Washing
If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
Illustration: (Teenagers have stinky Feet!) No one really likes feet..teenagers have stinky feet!! But we are called by the Lord Jesus to wash one anothers feet.
Illustration: (Crammed in an Elivator)Getting in an elivator with 30 Japanise people in LA - God wants us to minister to one another in close proximity
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
A. A required posture
A. A required posture
To wash one anothers feet we most be in a position of humility
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
B. A relieable plan
B. A relieable plan
The plan to wash is the written Word of God
We must know and be familiar with Gods Word in order to help and ministrer to anyone!
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.
MEM. O how love I thy law! It is my meditation all the day.
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
C. A revealed purpose
