God’s Verdict!!!
Chapter 3
Romans 3:1–9 NASB95
1 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? 2 Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3 What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? 4 May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, That You may be justified in Your words, And prevail when You are judged.” 5 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.) 6 May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? 7 But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner? 8 And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “Let us do evil that good may come”? Their condemnation is just. 9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;
Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?
1. Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?
Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God.
What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it?
May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written,
“THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS,
AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED.”
But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? ( I am speaking in human terms.)
May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world?
But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner?
And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “ Let us do evil that good may come”? Their condemnation is just.
What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin
1. Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?
Answer there is an advantage because you have received the oracles of God. (The old testament) you should have an advantage
2. What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it?
Answer, the unbelief of man will not change the Word of God. ! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar
3. But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He?
Answer May it never be!
4. But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner?
Man would use his logic to escape the judgment of God. Some would say “let us do evil that good may come.” Verse 8.
But notice what Paul says, “Their condemnation is Just.”
5. What then? Are we better than they? Are the Jews better than the Gentiles?
NO!!! all is under sin Verse 9
Notice now God Verdict.
Romans 3:9 NASB95
9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;
What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin.
Under sin
The word under here is the word Hupo meaning beneath.
suggest being buried, I’d say even covered.
So all are under sin points to a position of authority over them.
Here it is referring to sin as a ruling power which has subjected all men.
Both Jew and gentile.
And at one time or another all of us here.

1. The position of the Jew is the same as the Gentile.

“Are you better than they?” You have the law you should be.
a. The Jews received the oracles of God but did not believe.
b. The Jews received the Law of Moses but continued in unrighteous, not even one.
Romans 3:5 NASB95
5 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.)
Verse 5{But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? ( I am speaking in human terms.)}
The privileged position of the Jew does not exempt him from sin. He stand in need of God’s righteousness as well as the Gentile. God’s verdict is:
Romans 3:10 NASB95
10 as it is written, There is none righteous, not even one;
there is none righteous, no not one. Verse 10

2. Sin has reigned over all men. “all under sin”

a. Under sin means man has become the servant of sin. Sin rules over him.
b. The flesh become the place where sin reign. Man is dominated by his body, lust, desires….
c. Sin becomes a principle of life which distorts the image of God.

3. Sin has found a way to reign through man’s selfishness and rebellion.

a. Man has chosen to live apart from God. This is rebellion.
b. Man has decided to live for himself. This is selfishness.
THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS,
Romans 3:11–12 NASB95
11 There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; 12 All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.”
THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;
ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS;
THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD,
THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.”
There is none who understands (the ways of God)… all have turned aside, together they have become useless: there is none who does good, there is not even one.

4. This is a moral picture of man.

“THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE,
Romans 3:13 NASB95
13Their throat is an open grave, With their tongues they keep deceiving,” The poison of asps is under their lips”;
WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING,”
“THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS”;

a. His throat is an open grave.

Out of the grave comes vulgarity, obscenity, and hateful speech.
The mouth is like the odor of open grave. IT STINKS!!!

b. With his tongue he keeps deceiving.

Deceit in the Hebrew means, “they smooth their tongues.’’

c. The poison of the asps is under his lips.

This refers to the Egyptian cobra whose poison is contained under the lips.
His speech is described as poison that destroys.
“Where they go, you can trace them by the ruin and distress they leave behind.” Denney
Romans 3:14–18 NASB95
14Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”; 15Their feet are swift to shed blood, 16 Destruction and misery are in their paths, 17 And the path of peace they have not known.” 18There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
“WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS”;

d. Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.

“THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD,
DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.”
“THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.”
Cursing rather than blessing come from his mouth
5. Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.
a Cursing rather than blessing come from his mouth
Bitterness and unforgiveness are his way of life.
Hatred, anger, and strife characterize his life.

e. His feet are swift to shed blood.

Violence and war is the nature of the natural man.
His entertainment also is composed of violence.

f. Destruction and misery are in his path.

He is able to destroy. Civilization is built upon the ruins of civilization.
His ambitions always leave destruction and misery behind.

g. The path of Peace he has not know

No peace in his heart, no peace with God.
You cannot find peace in this life.

h. There is not fear of God before his eyes.

No fear indicates no reverence for God.
He refuse to humble himself

Here comes God’s verdict:

Romans 3:19–20 NASB95
19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; 20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God;
Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God;
because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
Here for the first time one of the main key word in Romans.

JUSTIFICATION

Justified.
Dikaioo meaning to render not Guilty, to vindicated, to acquit, to be pronounce and treat as righteous.
The law closes the mouth of those under the law. Verse 19
1. The law speaks to those under the law.
2. The law judges sin and brings death.
3. So that the whole world is accountable to God.
Through the law comes the knowledge of sin verse 20
1. The law was given to reveal sin,
2. The law was given to judge the sinner.
No one will be justified by the law, the law brings guilt, judgment and death; it is unable to set the sinner free or justify him before God. No flesh can be justified by the law.
But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
Romans 3:21–23 NASB95
21 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Again God’s verdict is, all have sinned and fallen short.
Sinned here is the word ham-ar-tan'-o meaning missed the mark.
Falling short here means fall short come in behind or be the worst.
The present tense here indicates a continual failure to mess up.
You need Jesus. You need a savior.
1. as God looks at one’s actions, He sees continual sin.
2. As God looks at one’s life, its fails to measure up to the righteousness of his glory.
Man is a habitual sinner who has failed to measure up to the glory that God has ordained for man. When God speaks all had best listen and repent.
