Blessed to be a Blessing
Blessed to be a Blessing
Introduction:
Let’s be honest about what the Christmas season has become. Money driven consumerism. It is a time for the world flaunt their wealth. And it is killing our nations as Christmas drive people more and more into debt.
The average american spends over $900 on Christmas presents.
In homes, mom’s and dad’s spend upwards of $200 per kid.
This doesn’t even account for what we spend on ourselves.
I just want to go on record as saying, we are living in the greatest period of human history. And I long for the future. If I had a time machine, I’m going forward. Some of you wish you’d have been born in a different era. Not me. technology is awesome. But technology is expensive.
We are incredibly blessed. Even the poorest among us are blessed.
All the promises of God find their yes in Jesus Christ.
The Christmas Thread connects the promises of God for a savior. We started 2 weeks ago with the very first promise for a savior. A lot has happened since then. There was great evil followed by a great flood. Noah got drunk and the people’s of the earth tried to build a tower to heaven. God said nope. He jumbled languages and scattered people to the nations.
Then God chose to work through the family of one man: Abraham and the seed of one woman: Sarah.
Gen 12:
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.
2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
Big Idea: Christmas is about being a blessing to others.
Being a blessing to others requires at lot of trust in God.
Being a blessing requires obedience.
Being a blessing requires humility.
3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”
4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.
5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,
6 just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered;
8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”
