First call of the four
Peter
Andrew
James
John
The call
Mark 1:17 NASB95
And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
Required a change of direction
Requires commitment
The call related to ability (God-given) but a different approach “I will make you”
The call always relates to man in some way “fishers of men”
The response was immediate (they knew in there heart) ,
Synagogues mentioned 68x in NT
Synagogues require 10 or more Jewish men in order to be established
During the time of Christ, there were estimated to be 480 synagogues in Jerusalem alone
They were used for:
a. Jewish worship
b. Schools for young boys
c. Courts for handling minor civil disputes
Each synagogue would be managed by a board of elders with its chief elder presiding over its services. (, , )
Demonic activity is a prevalent them in the NT
The subject of Satan and his demonic host appears nearly 175x in NT
Demons were believed to be everywhere
The world believed very strongly in evil spirits
Jesus establishes his authority as a healer of the demonized and prove himself to be greater than the power of Satan
Jesus confronts demons face-to-face and sternly ordered their departure
Religious leaders also cast our demons (, )
This dynamic presentation awoke a casual synagogue service!
This is the third miracle Jesus performed
D. The Second call of the four
The first call had to do with faith
The second call has to do with obedience
.
Luke 5:1–11 NASB95
1 Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; 2 and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 3 And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat. 4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; 7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” 9 For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.” 11 When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.
The disciples were following and listening (They were with Jesus, hanging around)
The disciples were still concerned with fishing (mending nets)
The disciples were willing to help Jesus out (Let Jesus use there boat)
Peter and his partners were unsuccessful in their “doing it their way” approach to the call (caught nothing)
This is only part of the call
5. Jesus gives them a command that seems unusual (let down your nets)
6. The disciples respected Jesus enough to obey even though it was against there better judgement (but at your bidding I will let down my nets)
7. The blessing was overwhelming (boats began to sink)
8. Peter realized his lack of obedience (I am a sinful man)
9. Jesus forgives and encourages Peter (Fear not, you will be catching men)
10. They left everything and followed Jesus (completing the second stage of the call)
E. The call of Matthew
Levi, son of Alpheus
1. James the son of Alpheus
James the son of Alpheus
2. Levi, the son of Alpheus
— No biblical account stating they were brothers
— Even in the same context that James and John, Peter and Andrew are described as being brothers
Luke
Luke 5:28 NASB95
28 And he left everything behind, and got up and began to follow Him.
Matthew not only believed, but he obeyed

H. Cleansing of a leper followed by much publicity
Leprosy (Hansen’s disease) is one of the most terrible diseases of all time.
First a patch of skin becomes discolored and numb, usually somewhere on the face. From there the path may spread and grow into thick, glossy tumor-like welts. Next the disease advances to the hands and feet. The fingers and toes commonly shrink and lose their usefulness. As the external tumors grow, they leak and discharge a very unpleasant odor. Finally, the disease will work internally, affecting the larynx. Slowly, inch-by-inch, the victim dies over a span of ten to twenty years
THE SITUATION OF THE LEPER
Would be quarantined ()
Would be ceremonially unclean, and therefore unfit to worship n the house of God (, ,,)
Everyone had to avoid him ()
Had to cry “unclean” whenever someone approached him ()
Leprosy is a type of sin - No cure without God
