21 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”
4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
5 “Say to Daughter Zion,
5 “Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ” v
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

By his actions Jesus declared himself Messiah/King

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” y
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

By his actions Jesus declared himself Messiah/King
He intentionally asked for the two animals, knowing the prophecy of the OT
He also

Declared the type of King he would be

and by declaring himself as king and the type of king he also

Declared the nature of His kingdom.

The Types of People Present on the First Palm Sunday:
People were there because they heard of Jesus and He was coming to town. They wanted to see what all the commotion was about and if all the stories were true. They were curious. They were screaming King Him on Sunday and Crucify Him on Friday
People longed for Him to be the King they wanted, they ignored the facts that He was riding upon a donkey. The colt is a sign of peaceful king, instead of a horse, which is the animal of the military conqueror. He showed that he came not to destroy but to love; not to condemn but to help; not in the might of arms but in the strength of love.
Estimated crowd was about 2.5 million

His followers who were confused as the week went along, but continued to follow Him.
the laying of cloaks and garment created a type of “red carpet” for the King
“hosanna” from it means save now but essentially it is a people’s cry for deliverance and for help in the day of their trouble; it is an oppressed people’s cry to their saviour and their king.
