Communications Killer – Inaccurate Assumptions

James 1:19 This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger;

Intro slide – Communication Killers - 1. SARCASM—Sarcasm is one of the biggest communication killers 2. SHADOW TALK—Shadow talk occurs when one partner does not directly let the other know clearly what he or she wants, feels, or expects 3.  oVERGENERALIZATIONS  4. INACCURATE ASSUMPTIONS
5. CULTURAL DIFFERENCES 6. MIND GAMES hidden agenda beneath the surface.
7. INTIMIDATION 8. SENDING CONTRADICTORY MESSAGES

Healthy life together – Ephesians 4:15-16 Healthy relationships do not just happen, they are a matter of huge investment and numerous choices over the life of those involved. Diane and I are growing and changing in our relationship together and it is good, but often difficult. Change is tough! Habits are comfy even when they are stinky destructive.

Inaccurate Assumptions – assumptions part of life, but thus can get out of control. Communication killer in marriage, with children or parents, friendships, job, church family.

Dangers of assumptions – My experience this week, Jenny Share.

So what can we do?

Acknowledge you are not a mind reader! No mind readers. Neither am I. God can give us insight into people’s hearts as he did Jesus, but I don’t believe that to be the norm. We can have a lot of prior experience with someone and think we know their motives, and many times we are right just often enough to get into trouble. Like me with Greek. Sophomores.

Often tied to overgeneralizations – lumping one behavior or person with others inaccurately.

Choose not to assume: Ask God to reveal this in me, repent, set a new direction for life together. You can choose to change direction. It will take time and it may well be difficult.

Check your impressions and assumptions. Step out and seek clarity. “Do I have permission to read your mind”, or “May I check an assumption?” This can be tough, and requires permission and cooperation. People may misunderstand, but check anyway! Don’t fall back into the misguided belief that you are marvo the magnificent.

Remember James’ words - But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger;

Listen first. Check assumptions. Speak the truth in love.

Prioritize the purpose: building one another up in love until we all are grown up in Christ!

Life Questions

Welcome: What is your favorite type of recreation?

Worship:

Word: Read James 1:19 and Ephesians 4:15-16

What stands out to you from these passages or from the sermon Sunday?

What happens when you are quick to listen to someone?

What part do we play in one another’s “growing up” in Christ?

Tell us about an incorrect assumption someone made about you? How about one you made about someone else?

How can you put into practice the action points from the message Sunday and from the Bible verses we looked at in our group? When will you begin?

Works: Revisit your blessing list, adding names if needed. Pray for the people on your blessing list. Ask God for direction in touching their lives. Listen and share with one another what God seems to be saying.
